Image numbering on Nikon D80

I've somehow reset the numbering on the D80 and everytime I download the pics from the SD card, it resets and the image numbering starts at DSC_0001 all over again. This is causing a problem in storing the images as it now places a DSC_0001-1...and so on after all the pics I download. I've found where I can reset this to zero, but can't figure out how to stop it from resetting.
More importantly, is there a manner in which to set the numbering on the camera to start with (and continue) at a certain number...say DSC_0986...and continue??
