The cropped one looks a lot like a watercolour... but done with dirty water (too much dark grey / blue). If I was going to crop in this kind of way, I would have aimed to make the "windows" relatively much larger.

However, I think I prefer the original. With a bit of work to bump up the brightness and make the silhouetted landscape more obvious against the background, I think it would look very powerful, especially with powerlines at the bottom echoing the spread of the clouds above.
