I have a 10Mp Canon P&S I carry all the time. Trace my posts, its all I talk about.
I got a camera bag from CaseLogic that is about twice the size of my camera. I carry a mini tripod, an SD to USB thingy, and breathmints.
In my car my bag rides on the center consol area and when I take it inside I leave it tucked away out of sight. Most people who know me know I'm a camera guy and they are used to it.
