Have you gone right to the heart of the question? Ever try putting the Sun directly behind, let camera sort out the exposure? If windy, use high shutter speed. The link is to a simple shot, no special lens, filter or setting, just letting the camera handle the light.

My apologies, jiminy, I completely missed your message (still learning my way around). I've heard of Paris, IL, but never been through it. I'm in Bloomington - a transplant from Louisiana and still not used the lack of trees.

Thanks for the idea about the sun directly behind the subject. I've done it with the sun filtering through trees, but it never crossed my mind in a wide open space. Your photo is stunning - thanks for sharing!
