the first association of the "powerful portrait" for me, was trying to capture someones expression, feelings, sincerity,sadness, happiness etc.
that's just my opinion. as an example here is something i consider as my powerful portrait

on the other hand, one may think that more important is technique you'll choose to take the portrait....
