That's tough. I carry two bodies with me. The D300 usually has the 50mm f/1.8 or the 85mm f/1.8. The fast lens plus the D300's high ISO performance makes it fantastically versitle.
On my D40 I keep the 24-120mm VR mounted when it's in my bag for quick shots. That's my walking around lens. When I'm actually shooting with the D40, as in out for the day shooting, I am almost always using the 70-300mm VR lens. I'm a sound engineer so I'm almost always stuck behind the mixing board at the back of an auditorium. The range is helpful to getting decent shots.
Ironically I typically lend out the D300 to friends that are at the show while I stay behind the board with the D40. Seems I have it backwards...
