And, gee, the fact that those are all cameras with larger sensors wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it?

C'mon, the 7D is still a 1.6x crop body, for all the hoo-hah. Of
course it's not going to give you the high iso noise performance of full-frame and 1.3x crop cameras.

Errr... except for the high iso noise banding issue. Saying that the 500D and 550D are the same is kind of like saying that the 50D and 7D have the same sensor. They don't. The 500D is the next evolution/tweak of the 50D's sensor, the 550D is sharing sensor tech with the 7D.
But yeah, it's not going to be a huge step up in quality, especially if you're not considering the video features, which are the main highlight of the refresh.
