Embed Images in Our Comments Section – NEW FEATURE
A much requested feature from our readers is the ability to show images IN comments. Previously readers had to leave a link to their photo sharing site page but now you also have the option to embed an image into a comment. You can see this feature in action in the comments section of our last weekend photography Challenge.
To embed an image into a comment look for the line that says ‘You can add images to your comment by clicking here’ underneath the comments fields at the bottom of our posts. It looks like this:

Click the link and a little popup window opens up where you can submit a URL of an image. Please note – the URL that this needs is not a flickr page where is shown along with commments but the actual url of the image.
For example – don’t put a URL like http://www.flickr.com/photos/darrenrowse/3649154608/ but instead put one like http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3338/3649154608_4e8bdac973.jpg.
To find the URL right click on an image and select ‘view image’ or ‘copy image location’ and you’ll find the URL that we can use.
Want to give it a go? Feel free to share an image in comments below.
Please note: comments are often moderated so may not always appear immediately. Please also keep images to a ‘family friendly’ standard – no nudity please in this public forum.
UPDATE: Working in conjunction with Flickr we’ve now tweaked this feature so that you can get your picture in by doing one of two things:
1. post the picture’s actual URL
2. post the flickr page URL that the picture is on
We’re also now able to authomatically link the FLickr pictures embedded back to your Flickr page which hopefully will send a little traffic your way and which makes us compliant with Flickr’s TOS. This happens auto-magically with the help of Flickr’s API

Awesome!

Neat, I’m not surprised this is so oft-requested!
Also, it’s fall in the Upper Peninsula!

Nice feature, hope people won’t overdo it. Don’t want to wait 5 minutes till a page is loaded just because everyone just posts to show off pictures and spams the comments.

great feature!!!
October 24th, 2009 at 6:55 am
So excited! I never commented with pictures before, but I will definitely start doing that now!

Thanks for the “family friendly” ordinance. I was concerned this would become non-work safe. While I’m here, here’s a shot I took this weekend while we were up in the canyon:

This is a great timely addition to the site. Now if you could develop a way for people to leave comments about individual images.
I participated in a recent “challenge” and was dissappointed to find nobody commenting on my images. But I realized this was not an easy task within the comment structure of this site.

This is something that I have been working on for my site! I was going to code up my own WordPress plugin to do this too!

October 24th, 2009 at 8:13 am
Just testing this out! This could be a useful feature.
October 24th, 2009 at 8:32 am
This is amazing, giving it a test from my flickr account.
October 24th, 2009 at 8:38 am
Very great addition to the site!

October 24th, 2009 at 11:33 am
It would be great if you could also specify a URL that the embedded image could link to – so if a visitor clicks an embedded image, they can then view a larger version / blog entry about it / etc.

@Martin
I think it IS possible to add a URL to an image by simply using an tag. Try to click my image! :-)
Did it work?
October 24th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
@Gloson: excellent – it’s working.
October 24th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
@Martin: Great! I mean you need to use a tags in order to link images.
October 24th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Darren, maybe you could write a plugin so that other bloggers can use this feature ;-)

What a great idea! I <3 this website!!! My test image:

Update: we’ve just been contacted by Flickr who tell us that we need to provide a way for the image to link back to the page on Flickr. WE’ll be working on this in the coming week so as to comply with their Terms of Service.

I really like this site. You’re rocking.

Great! Love the feature.. just that people should post small sized ones rather than 3 MB images.

This is such a great new addition to the site. I look forward to seeing some work by the great photographers who routinely submit constructive comments on the site.

The photo I embedded in my comment didn’t turn up. How come?
October 25th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
@MeiTeng I think your code is wrong.
At the end of a picture URL, there must be a .jpg, .gif, .png, etc. Anf if you want to add a link, here’s the correct format:
Hope this helps!

@Fletch Hmm… I guess.. Let me try with another one of my photos:
I copied it directly from http://www.flickr.com/photos/gloson/4038142037/sizes/m/

hmm…looks like you can’t.

This is a really nice new feature. It’s always inspiring to see some of the great work being done by so many outstanding photographers.

Let me try this…
October 26th, 2009 at 11:01 am
I can’t seem to find the URL that you mentioned above in your write-up. Will this work on images uploaded to Picasa?
October 26th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Seems like my comment from yesterday got moderated out.
Anyway, the gist of it was that its anoying you can just paste the relevant html into your posy and are forced to use the BB code link.
Also It appears you can’t wrap a link around the image. Therefore it is impossible to post your images without breaking the flickr TOS. They state you need to link back to the flickr photopage if you use the image hosted on flickr on an external site.
I’m sure the DPS team will look at this as they are usually quite hot on respecting the content/bandwidth of external sites.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
@Mei Teng
You need to right-click an image and then click “Copy Image URL”, and that is the image link.
@Fletch
But it is possible. I linked an image earlier. Check it out above. This is how I did it:
October 27th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
@ Glosson – What a horible convoluted way of posting linked images, I don’t think I have ever seen a site that required a combination of HTML and BB Code together.
All HTML didn’t work as it was filtered out and a post with all BB Code fell foul of the moderators.
Darren – Please just let us use plain HTML like we can in the forum. It would make following the flickr TOS so much easier. If you don’t want images as links then please say so and state people shouldn’t be using images hosted on flickr.
October 27th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
@Fletch
Yeah, I agree. It is much simpler and easier to just copy and paste the HTML code from the flickr page. But anyway, the HTML + BB Code is a method that I found out, so I guess Darren didn’t mean to mix them.

I did it! Yes!!
October 28th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
But you broke the flickr terms of service TOS. Your images are hosted on flickr servers but not linked back to the flickr photopage the image is displayed on. Its against the rules and could get your flickr account deleted, at the very least the images may get deleted.
Here is the link that explains: http://www.flickr.com/guidelines.gne
October 29th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
From a Picasa Web Album. I read a post on the forums about how “hard” it was to link back to your photo, so I’m testing that out…

Okay, I just reread the instructions for getting a photo to post in a comment, and want to try it again.
First is Tenzin playing in the leaves. The second one, my favorite, is Tenzin looking for bugs.
All comments and suggestions are welcome, as I am new at this and his black fur makes him a challenge to photograph. Thanks!
