Do you have a place that you just keep going back to with your camera?
Do you have a place that you just keep going back to with your camera?
As I think back over the years of my own photographic journey there have been a number of such places for me as I’ve lived in different places and have experimented with different types of photography.
- When I was quite young there was an overpass near my house where I used to go and shoot light trails
- Then there was the phase that I always went out to an airport near my house and used a telephoto lens to photograph planes
- Then I went through a phase where I would travel down the coast here in Australia along a road called the ‘Great Ocean Rd’ to photograph rock formations off the coast
- Lately it’s been more about my kids – so I guess the ‘place’ I’m using my camera more and more is in my home.
Where do you keep returning with your camera? If you’ve got a favorite picture of that place – share it in comments below.

There is a park one block away from my house with the absolute BEST view of the city of Milwaukee. I always find myself wandering over that way, and I always end up with something special. There is a music festival called “Skyline Music” every Tuesday for free during the summer.

There is a local park about seven miles from my house that I visit several times a week with my wife and my dog. At least once a week I take one of my cameras with me. The park sits on the Great Miami River and offers a lot of different river views, floral and small wildlife (especially frogs).

I have several favorite locations, but the absolute best is Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi in Bariloche, Argentina. Its mix of mountains, lakes, and sunsets is great for the my landscape/travel photography style.

Yes, I do have a favorite place I like returning to year after year: Big Bend National Park. Though an 8-hr drive from Austin, TX, the park is magnificent and offers lots of opportunities to explore it with my camera. I’ve been going there since 2000 and continue to find new areas I have not visited previously Here’s my site: http://ka-el.net/bigbendnp/.

Well… I tend to take a lot of the modeling pictures at my aunt’s house. It’s just very cool, and I’m sure that’s the place where I’ve taken the most pictures: Lightroom tells me they are about 3,600 pictures there.
Another place is the school I give English and Photo classes, but that’s because they ask me for a lot of pictures of life in campus etc.

My neighborhood. Countless places in New Mexico, but especially Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge. Magnificent landscape, stunning birds.

Dulles International Airport for great aircraft pictures, especially the huge international aircraft that come in during the afternoons. Airshows are another great place and a number of local ones provide plenty of practice.
Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, VA to take pictures of the Washington Capitals hockey practices and some of the local college teams games.

One place to which I keep going back is Lockhouse 75 on the C&O Canal. It is located in Western Maryland just a few miles from the western terminus of the canal in Cumberland. The lockhouse, the lock and the area around it is very photogenic and I can always find something different when I go there.
Here is a link to a recent photo that I posted on Riff’s Photography Journal.

The gorgeous view out of my apartment windows.
I have a view of the whole sky over the Sydney city skyline…Anzac Bridge, Harbour Bridge, Centerpoint etc.
The view is forever changing and I love to capture the mood of the sky.
Just this morning as I staggered to the bathroom I was stunned to full wakefulness by the gorgeous pinks, oranges and purples of a cloudy sunrise.

My mom’s garden, it’s where I started go back every time i visit, really helped me grow. Tam Tam in montreal, the closest thing to street when you are not in the street, or events where you don’t need an assignment. going there often is good practice it helps my composition and my eye instincts. I often try new lenses in a park close to my house, they are various types of subjects there and am able to evaluate the potential of a specific equipment. and develop a new eye

For me, It’s Cape Elizabeth, ME. Right outside of Portland, It has everything–ships and boats of all shapes and sizes out of the harbor, a working, lighthouse, a rocky cove with cliffs and smashing surf and a long sandy beach with an endless vista of sea and sky. Going to stop thre next week, and can’t wait.
July 19th, 2010 at 8:27 am
Amazingly, I just came back from doing that very thing! As a child I loved taking pictures there. Fast forward thirty years and I still love going with my daughter.

There are some cool lichen growing on a tree somewhat near my work. On my lunch hour, I often pass by this tree and attempt to capture some of their neatness – it’s hard! The picture I link to above is the only one I’ve ever been happy with, though I’ve shot the lichen a dozen times.

I go regularly to the Banff and Jasper National Parks. I cannot get enough of the Canadian Rockies especially when they are only an hour and half away.

Like the post author, I go through phases in my photographic journey. So it depends which phase I am in right now. I don’t have a particular place that I return to at the moment. Except that, I would like to concentrate more on photographing people whether it be in the outdoors or indoors.
I used to frequent the iconic Twin Towers alot when I first started out with night photography.

As a transplant into Minnesota, and a lover of waterfalls, the place that I can’t resist photographing again and again is the state’s most popular waterfall, Gooseberry Falls. Just an hour north of Duluth on scenic Hwy 61 (like the dylan song), the park that Gooseberry Falls is in is among the most popular in the entire state. I have photographed it in all seasons–frozen winter, raging spring, dry summer and autumn color wreathed fall.

I like to visit the local conservatory. It’s almost impossible to take a bad photograph of a beautiful flower, and the diffused lighting inside of a greenhouse is just about perfect all the time.
It’s a great place to learn DOF control and practice interesting compositions.

My favorite spot is in my backyard. It’s like a comfortable pair of jeans.
When I lived in an apartment I spent every moment I could at a National Park that was about 40 minutes from the city I lived.
Wherever it is you just go back to get the perfect shot.

Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour. I first heard about it when watching a show about the Sydney biennial back in 2007 or 8. At my first visit the place was still pretty dilapidated which made it quite photogenic.
After my last visit earlier this year a lot of renovation had been done which made it less interesting. I will go again, but if they have done too much then it may be my last.
If you ever get up to Sydney, check it out.
Cheers Rex

I have a place; <a href="http://www.kim-aldis.co.uk/dogdays/portfolio/landscapes/?pid=40".
It's a short section of shore between Oddicombe and Babbacombe beachs just up coast from Torquay in S. Devon. I love this beach. The shot above for some reason makes me think of that shot in the French Lieutenant's Woman. I don't know why, it's not even a pier but I just see a cloaked, hooded figure at the top of the steps.

there is a place on the Bay of Bengal, called Kuakata in Bangladesh where I’ve been visiting for the last 5 years…. this is a place where I’ve found changes every year….. its an example of environmental change and evidence of sea-level rise……. even though the experiences haunt me, I simply can’t avoid going there….. actually I just came back from there this Sunday morning!!

Nowhere quite as exotic as some of the locations noted above. A local bridge that connects two counties and two small towns was condemned. Long before I was interested in photography I was entranced by the bridge and the connections it made. When it was condemned I knew I had the chance to photograph it unmolested by vehicles and should use the opportunity before the demolition proceeded. Because of the weak economy, state funding for the bridge’s demolition hadn’t been found, until now. Demolition is scheduled for this month.

The place I keep going to photograph is the Blue Ridge Parkway specifically the area between Grandfather Mountain and Bowing Rock North Carolina. This section of the Blue Ridge Parkway is the most beautiful part of the Parkway and the most unrestricted. I have photographed the Parkway for over 30 years. And I also have family pictures of the Parkway that my parents took in the 1950’s with a Kodak Browning camera. I still have the Browning.

Does “outside” count? I kind of wonder where I will return. I’ve only been taking photos for 5 or 6 years and only had the DSLR a little over a year. Since I started I’ve lived in three states but I try to drive around as much as possible and go to different places so I don’t tend to hit the same place twice unless I think I missed something or I didn’t like the weather.
July 19th, 2010 at 11:44 pm
I have about 3 places. One is a local state wildlife area. It’s along the lake and there is a beach. I love to go there and get sunsets (sunrises don’t work so good because there is a nuclear power plant to the east that gets in the way). And there is a botanical garden I love to go to. In fact I’m going to shoot my first wedding there in a few weeks.. And the last place it our local zoo, and more specifically the aviary house. They have rooms where the birds are in free flight with wonderful murals on the walls the make the most beautiful bokeh

I go to the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant Wildlife Viewing area 3-5 times per week. It’s a very small plot of last maintained by the Army. I am documenting all the various wildlife including bugs, birds and mammals.

For nine weekends every summer I have the Bristol Renaissance Faire in Bristol, WI as a photographic playground. I’ve been going for 11 years, seriously taking photos there for the past 6. In fact it was one of the performers there that inspired me to upgrade to a DSLR.
Even if I only took photos of the Fantastikals (the Fairies of Bristol), I’d still never be bored.
This is one I took on opening weekend of the 2010 season:

EGRETS:
There is a country club close by with both a white and big gray egret, babies somewhere. I go to a small water fall about 5 times a week with my camera trying to get a good photo.
I have the composition down, but having difficulty getting a good photo that is crisp. Using a Nikon 50-200/VR with a teleconverter/2x to get close. I can get within about 100′ when I see them.

California has such a diversity of sites, but I find myself returning to two (2) very different locations. Death Valley is an amazing location anytime of the year. The dunes, the salt flats, and the iconic “Racetrack” provide opportunities limited only by my technique. The other location is the Griffith Observatory located in the middle of Los Angeles.

Living in southern West Virginia outside mining country, the options often seem endless.
I have several places I visit over and over.. One is Brushy Creek and waterfalls which is my favorite place to hike.
Here are two from there.

Rock me on the Water
I also like to take Sunday drives over two mountains, Bent Mountain and Elgood Mountain.
My latest was taken on Bent Mountain.
More recently, I’ve been doing street photography on a run down main street in a small town near where I live. It’s different and more challenging because people shots just are.
Here is one.

For me there is no other place like the Hocking Hills of Southeastern Ohio. I made my first trip to this location when I was about 12 or 13, back in the late 70′s. It was where I first discovered my passion for nature and landscape photography. Since that time I’ve photographed and lived in other scenic areas of the United States, including four years in Utah. The National Parks out west are breathtaking, but there is something about Hocking Hills that haunts the artist within me. It is a natural beauty that is just as much “felt” as it is seen. There is a spirit to the light on that landscape that draws you in and keeps you, to the point where you just don’t want to ever leave. Ohio is not known for scenic landscapes, but Hocking Hills stands in stark contrast to that assumption.

I love riding my bycicle around my neighborhood. There are many interesting spots along the walking path that travels through it. Gardens with beautiful flowers, trees, birdhouses, and then there is my bike. So where ever I can take my bike…I love to photographing my bike!

I love my garden for close up flowers and bugs. I also live near the beach a love to take pictures there during fireworks.
I am attaching a few of my favorite pictures, some for the color and some for the content.
You can see many of my photos on my website. Sorry it shares the site with my jewelry. Someday I will have two but for now this works for me.

I keep coming back to a smallish wildlife preserve. At first it was for the Trumpeter Swans that make it their winter home, but I kept getting drawn to the land itself too. Nothing particularly special about the place, just typical Northwest lowland, but there is something there that draws me back again and again. Hope I haven’t overdone the images. From so many it was hard to choose, but here are a few that show the variety of character through the seasons.

The places I always go to are around the farm. There is so much to see and so much changes with time

Living in Arizona, my two favorite subjects are the Grand Canyon and lightning. I find myself driving up to the canyon at least 4 or 5 times a year and there is always something new that I didn’t see before.
As far as lightning – although that’s not a specific “place”, I look for storms that produce quite a bit of lightning during our monsoon season and go take photos.

There is an abandoned farm in the thumb area of Mcihgan that I can’t get enough of. Especially the barn that is ready to tumble down and and the old farm equipment that is there. Any of them have trees growing through the center if them. Different light, different timeof day, and seasons, it just seems to draw me back.

There are two places that I seem to gravitate to.
1. The Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, MA. It’s a former trolley bridge that the town’s women’s club took over when the trolley stopped running. They added raised beds for flowers and a path down the middle and it blooms spring, summer and fall. Is the short walk of 1/4 mile you are surrounded by all the gorgeous flowers you can imagine – what better place to take photos?

2. Ballston Lake, NY. I just seem to keep going back there – throughout the seasons there always seems to be something of interest, whether it be birds, frogs, ice patterns in the water – something. There’s a path that leads across a marshy area out to the fishing dock and I find that walk to be relaxing and inspiring:

Probably the old power plant on the outskirts of town. I’ve taken a lot of photos there over the past couple of years.

South Lake Tahoe is my place I go there about 2-3 times a year, I would go more if it wasn’t for the three hour drive, but everytime I go I always see something new

I live in England and my favourite place for photography is a fishing seaside town called Filey. It has a lovely beach (which my odgs love to run around on), there are fishing boats lined up on the cobble landing, and there are many colourful characters that frequent the area. I just love it. I visit there around 6-8 times per year.

My favourite place is a little tiny cove, which I have named “:Strong’s Cove,(mainly because everyone who lives there is named Strong) in the town of Clarenville, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. Anytime, day or night, rain, fog sun shine I love them all(the times and the conditions..)
Look us(our beautiful province) up on the web sometime. Just type in: Newfoundland and labrador. Take care. Bud V

Living in Albuquerque, I find that almost everywhere I go I can find the most beautiful things to photograph. Even the graffiti on the sides of buildings downtown have a unique beauty that I just can’t get enough of. But, as much as I love the odd things around here, my favorite is actually a few miles away in the Cochiti Reservation. It’s nick name is tent rocks national monument and I find myself wandering around for hours!

Burlington, Vermont. My son went to University of Vermont for four years so we’ve been going up there alot. There’s so many photo opportunities around there from Lake Champlain, Church Street market place, the Green mountains…

My loving place to stay back again and again and to absorb forever without a bit of boredom is Munnar, the hill resort in Kerala – one of the beautiful states of India.

Yep I totally agree. There’s a beach just down the road from where I live which has lots of rocky bits, a good rocky break water and which looks very different throughout the day due to the light and the tides, so whenever I want to try out either new equipment or a new technique I tend to spend an afternoon there. I call it my “lab”. Its great to have such a place, both because its fun, because once you’re familiar with it you don’t need to waste as much time scouting (even though I learn something new about it every time I go), and because I can actually compare pictures to previous ones taken at the same location which gives you lots of insights about lighting, exposure, equipment quality, etc. in a reproducible way. it’s practically scientific.

I keep going back to the beach. I live in the coast and whenever I’m bored, stressed or need a time for myself, I grab my camera and drive to any of my town beaches.

There’s a saguaro I found that is a short drive and a short hike from my house into Saguaro National Park east of Tucson, Arizona. I’ve taken my kids and wife there many times. It creates the perfect silhouette for sunset shots.

I love to take pictures of the coast, especially Old Town, Florence , Oregon. The docks always have awsome boats to photograph. In the summer there is always alot of activity around the dock area.

I would have to agree with Thomas….the beach, actually under the fishing pier (under the boardwalk) and on the boardwalk at night in Ocean City, Maryland.

I travel around taking photos of many beautiful things, but I keep returning to my back porch at home, which faces due east and overlooks the hills of Selby. Every morning, I am treated to a sunrise – and it’s like a stunning picture that changes every morning. I’ve been photographing a myriad of sunrises for 2 years now, since I bought my first DSLR, and I find it makes a beautiful series, the same view in a hundred different lights and colors, moods and seasons (mysterious mists through to intensely colored summer sunrises). It is truly gorgeous and astounding to view them, and I feel so very fortunate.

There is a place just outside my home town that has a few old barns. I find myself going back there a lot; if there is a sunset, cloudy day, different times of the day, and I have photographed them in all four seasons. For some reason, these barns have peaked my interest. I think they are beautiful.

One of my favorite playgrounds is Beaver’s Bend Park in Oklahoma. I’ve taken some really fun shots there.

Frequent places.
There is a golf course close by with some water, and there is an egret and heron I go see about 4 times a week. Finally last week after 6 months, I got some repectable shots of the heron. Even though I have been going for 6 months, I am now even more devoted to going as perhaps they/heron is letting me get closer.
I was using a D90 with a 50-200 m lense, also have a teleconverter to use and a bigger lense. Teleconverter I like, but it is difficult to use on target that can leave at a moments notice.
I am hoping they are getting use to me so will try to get closer in the future.
Advice anybody?
Mike

The back of our house is a bay and across it an airport. I take shots of planes with my ultrazoom. I also take pictures of birds feeding on fish around the bay but my most enjoyable shots are those of a church located 9.8 kms away.
