What Are the Most Popular Digital Cameras at DPS? [RESULTS]

Canon-40DTwo weeks ago I asked DPS readers to tell us about their Digital Camera kits (and told them about mine). I ask this question every 6 or so months to try to get a picture of what cameras everyone is using.

Following are a few observations on what you the DPS community has in your camera bags:

DSLRs outweighed Point and Shoot cameras significantly

There were 5 times as many DSLRs mentioned. I suspect there are more point and shoot users who decided not to comment as the conversation was very DSLR focused. The Point and Shoots mentioned were so few and scattered that I couldn’t really identify a top list.

Top DSLRS

There were quite a few DSLRs which were mentioned time and time again. Here’s the top 10, listed in order of popularity.

Nikon-D80

  1. Canon EOS 40D (pictured above)
  2. Canon Digital Rebel XTi/400D
  3. Nikon D80 (pictured right)
  4. Nikon D40
  5. Canon Digital Rebel XT/350D
  6. Nikon D300
  7. Nikon D50
  8. Nikon D200
  9. Sony Apha A100
  10. Olympus Evolt E510

Canon and Nikon dominated the DSLRs

The brand mix in the DSLR section was like this:

  1. Canon - 69
  2. Nikon - 66
  3. Pentax - 9
  4. Sony - 7
  5. Olympus - 6
  6. Konica Minolta - 3
  7. Sigma - 1

It was close (as usual) but this time Canon came out slightly on top).

Thanks to everyone for participating!

I’m surprised the D300 has surpassed the D50 so quickly.

  • Fredrik Steffen Says:

I’m surprised and glad to see that the D50 even is on the list.

  • Sreejith Says:

Even Nikon D40X is not on the list.

  • Sudhakar Says:

For me my Pentax K100D super is still on top :-)

  • Aaron Snyder Says:

I’m surprised to see that the D300 isn’t higher. But I’m happy to see that the D50 is on there because I truly feel this is one of the best dSLR’s of it’s time. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a small backup/travel camera that will power new/old (non afs) Nikon lenses. I’ve been shooting with the D50 for a while, I’ll be upgrading to the D300 at the end of June, but still, the D50 is great. If you want to see some samples of it, they’re on my website. Used on ebay these are still a steal! Just my two cents…

The 30D has really been overshadowed by the 40D and even by the 400D in this survey. But I guess that’s fair enough considering the features these two models have.

  • Stephen Says:

“Even Nikon D40X is not on the list.”

In my opinion, the D40 and D40x is just not a good camera at all. I think Nikon really screwed it up.

  • Photochick (Amanda) Says:

I love my D50, but I’m always dreaming of bigger and better things *sigh*
    :o)

  • Jon - The DC Traveler Says:

I’m curious, which point and shoot cameras were in the top 5?

  • William Says:

So happy the D50 is on the list :D

  • Jay Says:

I have the Nikon D50 and the Canon 400D, but I’d say I use my Canon the most!

  • royston Says:

My Sony A100 and been more than quite able and is actually waiting for my abilities to catch up with it’s capabilities.

  • Andrew Steele Says:

Great to see the Digital Rebel hanging tough with its more expensive bretheren. I’ve had my 350XT (http://personafile.com/Canon-EOS-SLR-Camera-Digital-Rebel-350D-XT-8.0-Megapixel-Body-Only-013803049541.htm) for a couple years now, and between the great tips & tricks I find here and an 18-200 lens I almost never take off, it’s almost as convenient as my Sony DSC-T100 point & shoot but with vastly superior results. Now if it would only fit in my pocket too…

  • Bobmydog Says:

Canon 40D is tops. And even if it didn’t make it to #1, it will be #1 in my world!
What a great selection of cameras!

  • Richard Says:

I love my canon 40D. Its super fast, excellent resolution and
    easy to work with.

  • Georganna Says:

I too am surprised (happily so) to see the D50 so highly rated. I have been glad I kept it when I bought my D80 - and I am also surprised to see the D80 is at the top of the count for Nikon cameras. I love my camera; surprised how many others own it.

  • Jane Says:

Iused to swear by my Nikon, but having now used a Canon 30D (am I now out of the technology race?), I can’t fault it.

  • judi Says:

I have a Nikon D70S that I have great fun with. What would be the next step up?

  • Husbandhood Says:

I am also happy to see the D50 on the list. I just got mine from an ebay auction two weeks ago. I love it.

I actually read a lot of reviews on both the D50 and D70 and it seems that D50 is a better bargain for your buck. BTW, when the D50 came out some reviews were comparing it in quality to the D200.

  • Susie Says:

Tried both the D300 and Fuji S5 Pro. Loved the nikon but bought the Fuji. LOVING the color

  • keith Says:

good to see the e510 in there..as my first dslr it is a great performer with a brilliant price tag for a 2 lens kit and can only see it go from strength to strength

  • Brodie Weeding Says:

I think its great to see the D50 still golding on fairly well! I’m disapointed that the D40 is even in the list, its a poor take off of the D50 and doesn’t even feel like an D-SLR to hold, oh well everyone makes mistakes!
