Yeah, my photo teacher showed us a variation of this in class. Good trick to know.

One step I would add is feathering the selection. Depending o the size of the original image, I would feather by as little as 1-2 pixels up to around 8 pixels. I don’t want the edge between the teeth and the gums to be too hard.
Also, I’m sure you will have to do at least a little brushing to get the edges perfect.

LOL…the magic “twig”??? That would be “magic wand.”

The quality of this tutorial falls far, far short of what I have come to expect from DPS. You would have served us better by having someone do it with audio and better step-by-step instructions, and giving credit to the originator for the idea.

got to disagree with Bob - while it’s a ’simple’ tutorial in it’s presentation I found it effective and have been using it all afternoon to go over my old images. Thanks for posting it.

Bob : Trolling again I see. If it serves its purpose, I don’t see why should we pick on the unnecessary details.
Internet culture.
Anyway Darren, this is good stuff. Never thought of doing that before, though I’ve shifted people’s eyes to look at the camera. Hah.

Oh, I like this tutorial. Seen a totally different approach on another site (German though). But I think this is easier!
Thanks for posting it Darren!

I forgot to mention this earlier, but you can use technique to make the whites of your subject’s eyes whiter too. Of course, you have to reduce the intensity of the effect a bit. Otherwise, you might make your subject look pretty scary.

Pretty cool technique, thanks for posting!
To whiten teeth, I typically just grab the Dodge Tool, set the Exposure to 30-40%, and go over the teeth with a soft brush. It’s quick and easy and there’s no need to make a selection of the teeth. Just make sure your brush is small enough and that you avoid the gums as much as possible.
I can see where the technique posted here offers a bit more flexibility, and obviously you can change the settings later if needed.
