How Much did you Spend on your Last Digital Camera? [POLL RESULTS]
Earlier in the month I ran a reader poll here at DPS that asked readers - How Much did you Spend on your Last Digital Camera?
I found the results quite illuminating. Here’s how they look:
While there at a glance it seems that the most popular response was $1001 to $2000 it’s worth noting that all categories under this one had smaller ranges. When we add some of them together we find that it’s a much more even spread of results.

How about a poll on how many folks always carry a pocket camera and what they carry. I’m in the market for a new one and would love some guidance.

On the pocket camera side, I always have my phone (Helio Fin, 3MP) on me which so far has proved to take some decent photos. Otherwise I have a Pentax Optio W30.

When my wife upgraded from an old Sondy 3MP DSC-S70 to a newer Sony DSC-W50 I put her camera in the glove of my car.

I never had a pocket side camera, though i always felt the need for one. My next phone upgrade will be partially based on that. Paid about 1700$ on the original nikon d100. Probably will spend about the same, since i am planning to get the D300, but might wait for a while and see if the price drops. :-)

That’s a really good question. I’m curious as to whether people do carry a separate camera, and especially what they use them for. For example; is it just for incidental stuff to remember, like documenting a fender bender, or something they want to buy; or for quick snapshots, as of friends; or do they use it for stuff they really want to shoot, like that unexpected scenery they encountered.
I always carry both a telephone camera and a Palm camera, but neither of them offer sufficient quality for my regular photographic purposes. I wonder if it would be a good idea to add one of those tiny Point and Shoots that are out there.

I think the comment about a cameraphone is a good one. You pretty much always remember your phone, and its one less thing to be carrying around with you. Most phones have a pretty decent camera on now, the Sony line seem to be leading the way from what I have heard. I myself have a Nokia N80 which isn’t great, but certainly good enough to snap interesting things I see around when I don’t have my camera with me.

Our oldest daughter has been into photography for a couple of years now. She will graduate this year and is trying to figure out where she wants to go with her photography career. I have to say, she takes beautiful pictures, not just because I am her dad, but I have seen some “pro” photographs that weren’t near as good as she does (pro’s at rodeos) and they sell the pictures.
Any thoughts or ideas on how she should start out or maybe a good school for her to go to? She has photos she has taken on a couple photography boards and they seem to think she has the “gift”.

I carry Sony Ericsson K790i. So far so good. The experience has been more than satisfactory for a mobile camera :).

I actually sell many of the shots I take with my Canon SD550 to a local newspaper. I always have it with me and often happen onto an opportunity to take a quick photo, put a caption with it and make a sale.
I use my Nikon d-200 for scheduled photo shoots or when I’m going out to concentrate on photography. But, when I’m walking the dog or exercising, I have the Canon with me.

Penny, that’s amazing! And, it makes total sense, since the newspaper couldn’t even use the total quality you could provide by carrying around the (bigger and much less convenient) D200. For that kind of purpose, the little camera is perfect!
Now, THAT’s something I never would’ve even thought of. Thank you for that input, and helping assuage some of my curiosity.
Anyone else using theirs for something cool?

I always carry my Kodak C763 that I bought last summer. I live in a small colonial city in Mexico and whenever I have a chance, I go around and take pictures of the architecture. Sometimes there’ll be a special event in the city square or at the universities where I work and having a camera with me gives me the chance to capture those special moments.
I also bought a Canon S3IS last summer, but that one I carry with me on more special occasions. I’m still learning to use both of them.

More tips for the photojournalists among us. Even when I have my Nikon with me, I use the video on my pocket camera to take notes.
If I take a photo of a person, I’ll have them give me the details of the story and spell their name while I record them. Then I can play it over as many times as I need to get everything right. I can also email the file if an editor wants to fact check my piece.
And, I take photos as notes. I’ll take a shot of the side of a truck with the contact information if I’m taking a photo of some work underway in the neighborhood.
I’ve even sent photos to city official, prior to an interview, to show them exactly what I’m calling to ask about.

I always carry around a Kodak easy share v550, it fits easily in my shirt pocket & takes outstanding pics.

camera phones, ha !! ever consider the size of the sensor in a camera phone? forget it. consider the example:
a 8 mp camera, with a larger sensor will take a better picture than a 12 mp camera with a smaller sensor. — remember, the sensor is analogous to the size of the negative. a larger negative usually yields a better print than a smaller negative: also, larger sensor elements gather light better than a smaller one. Samsung makes a 12 mp camera phone, but the pix are probably noise-er /grainer than the beach.

The last camera we bought, my husband bought for his office. It is a cheapie one and it cost about $150. Before that my husband bought me a Canon Digital Rebel XT and it’s a 8 meg. It cost about $799.00.

My husband’s digital camera is about 6 months.
