Colorizing Black and Whites [VIDEO]
Today I’d like to present a video on Colorizing Black and White images in photoshop. The video is part of a course offered by fellow Aussie Shane Goldberg at Pro Photo Secrets.

Good simple tutorial. One item of note, I prefer duplicate the layer and add a B&W Fill/Adjustment Layer instead of just dropping the saturation. That way, you have more control over the background (the b&w parts) by adjusting the sensitivity to certain color ranges, as if you had a colored lens filter. For example, I can use this method to make the green appear darker or lighter behind them as part of the conversion to B&W. It’s just generally a better way to convert to B&W.
Then, like any other mask, you can use the black brush on the mask itself to let the colored layer shine through.
Nice tutorial, but is it the same process with other programs? I use GIMP instead of Photoshop.

Sorry, but when you can take perfectly good colour pictures with these new fangled digital cameras, why would you want to mess about and waste time colouring in a black and white one?

Thanks, but they didn’t have anything for GIMP. I’ll look around though.
In GIMP I normally use the Channel Mixer (Colors -> Components -> Channel Mixer…, select the monocrome option) when creating my black and white layer as this lets me emulate a red filter on the lens.
