A Happy Reader Shows Off Her Prize from DPS

lens-prize.jpegLast month at DPS we held a competition for one lucky forum member to win a Nikon D60 DSLR. The competition was won by forum member BullDogMom.

She had only just purchased a DSLR so I offered her the chance to pick another item from Amazon to the same value as the D60. She chose to get a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens. This is a lens that I use and love and was the first L-series lens that BullDogMom owned!

Today she sent me an email to say that the lens had arrived and even included a picture of it (left).

Sponsor Our Next Competition? - I’m hoping to run another competition in the coming weeks (it will have a different criteria this time) but am this time looking for a sponsor (or more than one) to provide us with a prize. If you are from a photography related company or know someone who works for one and would like to get some exposure to our hundreds of thousands of readers please contact me via our contact form!

Heh, Canon wins again! She didn’t want a Nikon, not even for free! Let the flames begin! :-D

  • Bozo Tic Says:

I own Nikon D80… But I hate flamers or flaming, so just congrats to BullDogMom on her choice and on her good luck. BTW, Klaidas, I am watching your flickr right now! :-P

  • Lori Says:

Congrats on winning the contest…does that mean the D60 is still up for grabs in another contest???

  • Klaidas Says:

I’d say the D60 has just been changed by the lens, but a moderator or an administrator should confirm it.

Whichever it is, there will still be more contests, and more chances for you and others to win :)

It’s a shame that the prize of a competition can be changed just like that, and also to a totally different prize altogether. I don’t have anything against Canon, but isn’t that just a little um, unethical? Just my two cents.

  • Spencer Says:

I’m not sure calling it unethical if fair. BullDogMom just bought a DSLR and would have probably put her prize on ebay and then gone out and bought the lens. DPS just made it easier and cut out the middle man.

    Anyways, congrats BDM.

So as Lori says, the D60 is still up, when it’s the next contest? I want a Nikon D60 no matter if I’m Canonist.

  • Moises Rivera Says:

Its a good move from DPS if she own a dslr and the possibilities of change the prize exist why not do it?

  • Bozo Tic Says:

Oh Raymond c’mon. Be reasonable. Most of us know that we’re usually brand dependant and for a person that has let’s say a couple of Canon lenses it is just a very inconvenient thing to get Nikon camera. In that case I would sell it later on and get me a new Canon lense.
And why bother if we have an administrator flexible enough to spare you all the trouble of selling and buying… Especially since it was a matter of luck and nothing more.

Well, I now am officialy over my quota on replies to one topic here. So again good luck with your new lence BDM!

  • Darren Says:

Raymond - the change of the prize was simply due to the winner having bought a DSLR the day before. She was willing to take the D60 but I thought as she’d just bought one that I would offer her the choice of some other prize that she’d actually be able to use. Having two DSLRs isn’t such a bad thing - it can be quite handy actually, but to have two different brands made little sense to me as they couldn’t share lenses.

Sure she could have gone out and sold the D60 and then bought a lens - but she’d never have gotten a full price for it as being sold as new.

The lens was valued at almost exactly the same price as the D60 - so a substitution of another prize made a lot of sense. In fact the lens is worth a lot more than the D60 but was on special at Amazon so I think the winner got a very good deal.

Would you rather me send a prize to someone that they wouldn’t use?

  • Raymond Chan Says:

Hi Spencer, Moises Rivera, Bozo Tic and Darren.

Thanks for the replies. After reading your comments, I guess I do get the point behind the prize exchange. I guess in the end, as long as BullDogMom is happy with what she had won, we should all be happy as well. Congrats! =)

    Cheers,

  • Krista Says:

That is great that you let her change prizes. Would be kinda expensive to have 2 different brand cameras. That was great that you let her do that!

  • JohnG Says:

Great pick!. 17-40mm is a beautiful lens. Very sharp and an affordable L lens. Congrat to BullDogMom.

  • Jeff & Candace Painter Says:

Great job on the contest! It was a good idea and I like the fact that you were flexible. Red tape stinks!!! Sticklers do too!!! I am really looking forward to the next contest since I joined after the first one was almost over. HMM, I may have to think about the sponsorship. Sounds like it may be a good idea.

  • Darren Says:

Raymond - thanks for taking a second look at our thoughts on it.

  • SinnedCbu Says:

What DPS did is great, hats off to the moderators..at the end of the day its all about getting awesome pics. And they just gave Bulldogmom a great tool to do that.Cant wait to see what future contests holds.

  • Sime Says:

Bulldogmum!… Again, well done!.. A very nice lens - looking forward to seeing your shots with it.

    Sime.

  • ditch_azeroth Says:

kudos to you bulldogmom. the 17-40 is muy sharp. i have pro photographer friends that swear by it (and they don’t bring their teles with them - they just use this and crop later… pseudo-cheating, but works for them i guess…)

  • Lilia Says:

WOW! Awesome choice of swap and love how flexible the moderators are in doing that. It shows how considerate and connected they are with the visitors of this site! Great choice and the first L lens is always exciting, just had that experience a few months ago! Congrats bulldogmom!

  • mr.intensity Says:

    CONGRATULATIONS BDM !!
Call me…vulgar but, (have you ever been in a ‘returns’ line the day after Christmas?) I see nothing wrong -as long as it’s in the same vein; photography- with giving cash, even. I agree with the person that said: “Spare her the middleman”
