The following post highlighting some great ‘rain photography was submitted by DPS reader Martin Gommel from the blog KWERFELDEIN.
13 fabulous photos with rain - with these pictures, I would like to give you a little inspiration to do some photography on rainy days. Many people’s first thought when they see it raining is to put their camera away - however Stormy and rainy days are some of the biggest chances to shoot moody atmospheric images.
People struggling with the wind, wrestling with umbrellas, obscuring the face with their jacket, jumping or running around like they are being chased by blood-sucking aliens…. I tell you : When it really rains down you have an exciting and rare theater right before you waiting to be shot by a photographer!
So I encourage to to search for a place that gives you a good angle to shoot and that covers your head AND your camera and start shooting!
That’s it for now. Now I’ll leave you with some of best pictures with rain that the web has ever seen. Let’s get inspired!

I love your shots! I totally agree with you about not putting away the camera when it rains. Would you mind explaining a little more what shutter speed, ISO and aperture you used to take this photos?

Beautiful photos Martin. At first thought shooting in the rain will seem unappealing to many I’m sure, but as you’ve shown with these great images it is a prime time to get some very dramatic photographs. Now I’m looking forward to some spring rain here to take advantage of :)

Wonderful assortment of inspiring rain photos. I like collections like this as a motivation to get me out and try to capture photos under similar conditions.

Thank you for this post. These are all truly inspirational images.
March 26th, 2008 at 2:17 am
I’m willing to bet that none of these were taken with a point and shoot. Except perhaps the last one, of the pebbles.
March 26th, 2008 at 2:26 am
I have to respond to M’s comment…the vast majority of these shots could easily have been taken with a point-and-shoot, some with post-processing and others without. Shots 5-7, 9, 11, and 13 could all have been shot with a mid-level P&S without any post-processing.
March 26th, 2008 at 2:57 am
Thanks Craig. That’s true. I looked at them again and I do have some pictured similar to 5-7. But with 9, the eery green effect is definitely due to some photshopping or filters (gasp). Nonetheless, it’s very hard to get a professional photographer to give good advice on which P&S to get. I’ve been laughed away, kicked, punch, set on fire, chased with a cactus laced with tabasco, and I still have not been able to get a pro-tographer to give me good advice on P&S. It’s like us Mac users. Whenever a Windows user says there’s something wrong with their machine, the first thing we’d do is laugh. Then we say “obviously” and we end with “just get a mac”.

These photos are great. I love shooting in the rain, and walking in it which is just as well.

Beautiful…makes me want to go shoot some rain!!
March 26th, 2008 at 4:00 am
M,
Ha! Obviously. Just get a DSLR.
Just kidding. I have a canon powershot digital elph that I love. Its an old 4.0 MP, but I’ve taken some (in my opinion) fantastic shots with it! I think many will agree when I say this: A good carpenter never blames his tools. Its not exactly what you have, but how you use it. Is a rolls royce better for driving me to the store than a dodge dart? No, both get me there and carry my groceries back, one just cost a hell of a lot more.
I think I’m just going to continue with metaphors and similar situations. I’m on a roll now. Many friends of mine have asked me, “what kind of guitar should I buy?” My reply is always the same, “whichever one sounds best to you.” Music is a lot like photography in that its a very personal art. I don’t claim to be a pro-tographer at all, so take this as you will. Just go into stores with floor models and try them out. Buy one that allows you to return it after 30 days if you don’t like it. I don’t think anyone but you can finally make the decision on what camera is right for you.
And now I step down off my pedestal.
Cheers,
Brian

Here’s link with with some good information on P&S cameras if you’re interested, I ran across this the other day.

But I agree with the above, it’s not the camera that makes the photo, it’s the photographer.
Enjoy,

Thanks all for your kind comments ! Good to see some conversation going on here on DPS !
March 26th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
johnd - the point is stated fairly clearly in the introduction and seems to have been achieved looking at everyone else’s comments.
This type of post is semi-regularly included at DPS. It’s not a ‘filler’ but an opportunity for us as a community to look over some different images around a theme and get a little inspiration for our own photography. While it may not be up everyone’s alley neither is having purely theoretical posts.
Ultimately, what ‘clogs’ up your RSS feed is not something that we here at DPS can determine - I presume if your feed reader is like mine you have the option to unsubscribe at any time. While we’d love you to hang around - if seeing some great shots around a theme is something you’re not interested in then feel free to check out what the rest of the web offers - I’m sure there’s a site out there that has a mix of posts more suited to your tastes.

Really great shots and very inspiring, as I live in a country where it seems to ALWAYS rain. I am nervous to use my camera in the rain (Canon EOS) and shelter is not always forthcoming. Cannot imagine holding an umbrella while shooting. Any tips?

It doesn’t rain much in Santa Barbara, I’m afraid, as I love this kind of weather. Of the shots above, I think number three is my favorite.
March 27th, 2008 at 3:17 am
How many of these were taken in the rain?
1st doubt it! studio lightening, with glass in front of the lens. The third one don’t make me laugh, its raining but the puddles are like mirrors!
Have a closer look at the photo’s have a think, how did they do it? where is the light coming from?
Get out into the rain and stop making photos up on the computer.

Really nice. I read this at 2:36pm and it so happens to be raining here in St. Vincent. I need to go try some pics in the rain. Hope it continues to rain by the time I leave work

Darren - you’re a classy guy! Nicely put!
As for the rain…. Okay, I love the warmth and sun here in sunny Southern California, but seeing pics like this make me really miss the rain! Next time we get rain here, I’m going to find some way to take advantage of that 5 minutes… :D
Thanks for the inspiration.
