24 Beautiful Dawn Images
Dawn is such a wonderful time to photograph life. Sun breaking the horizon, dew on grass, mist hovering over landscapes… of course, that’s only if you’re awake to see it.
Here’s some shots taken at dawn to give you a little inspiration to set that alarm clock one day this week and head out with your camera before day break. Looking for some tips on how to do it? Check out our 12 Tips for Photographing Stunning Sunsets and Sunrises.

Nice collection of sunrise pictures!
Here’s one of mine:

Dawn on top of Helakala volcano – Maui, Hawaii. We got up at 03:30 to be there in time to experience sunrise over the clouds.

Funny you should post this today… Starting this Sunday, I will be taking sunrise pictures at Brant Rock in Marshfield, MA, every day for a week! I’ve been planning this for awhile (had to wait for the kids to be out of school), so we’re all really excited! Hoping for mixed weather days so that I can take some good black & white shots, too.
The pictures you posted are beautiful! I hope that I get some great shots as well!
February 18th, 2012 at 1:32 am
Amazing shots!.
Make me question myself why I even try…
But no matter how early I’ll set my alarm clock, I’ll never be able to see wild animals, wide see, high mountains, brilliant city lights, etc…
Ok I might get some guys hanging out early or some morning dew…
No doubt, beautiful shots like this depend a lot on the location.
I’ve been able to take a few like this (not as good) when I’m on vacation

Beautiful, thanks for the inspiration

These are all such stunning images. Foggy mornings are my favorite time of day to shoot. Even the same scenes I see every day have a whole new personality when seen under the pre-sunrise light.
February 18th, 2012 at 1:58 am
Beautiful and amazing!!!
I love the 2nd one of the dew….
I love shooting at dawn when I get the chance – just got to do something with the kids???
February 18th, 2012 at 2:10 am
It’s been quite a while since I last got up in the darkness to go on a dawn photo raid. Seeing these makes me think to myself, maybe sometime soon….
Here is one I took in Oxfordshire, many moons ago: http://wp.me/p268wp-bF

I’m not really a morning person but fortunately I just have to look out my window some mornings for a great shot as was the case with this one.

Sometimes sunrise can give you light that makes you think the heavens are opening and welcoming you to a new day:
The scene is this photo was mesmerising in reality:

I love getting up early to photograph the sunrise! Definitely one of the most peaceful times of day.
However, one of my favorites, was this happy little experiment I did about 15-20 minutes before sunrise while I was waiting for the colors in the sky to change.

These are fabulous!

Would be nice if you included credit lines for the photographers. Like Jim Griggs’ image (the last one, from Africa.) I’m assuming it was used with permission and/or payment.

Wow, some amazing images. I think the hot air balloons is a favorite, though it’s a tough call.
I’m planning on heading out tomorrow morning, we’ll see what comes of it. In the mean time, heres a few sunrise shots from one of my favorite places:

Gorgeous photos, too many incredible images to pick a favorite!
February 18th, 2012 at 6:02 am
Some of these are absolutely stunning. Those birds in the fifth shot are so obliging! Taking flight at exactly the right moment.
There’s nothing quite so impressive as Angkor Wat around here, but I’m sure I can get a few decent shots if I have a go.
February 18th, 2012 at 6:29 am
A great collection of images and I really like the diverse nature of them all. The final two images in the post stood out the most to me.
I combined dawn light and the sunrise with photographing an abandoned cement factory in Cape Coral Florida:

Regarding the last image. I thought it was by photographer Jim Griggs. I now think I was wrong. Not his. My mistake and please accept my apologies.

This is a great collection of images. These have given me a lot of ideas about how to capture the quality of light that you only get at dawn and dusk. My favourite photos are the first and last ones. These images have given me some great ideas for my own blog.

Stunning photographs here! I’m not a photographer but I sure do appreciate the beauty of certain photographs. Some of these are so beautiful that they look almost unreal.
February 18th, 2012 at 10:16 am
Beautiful photos! I think my favorite is the fourth from last.
February 18th, 2012 at 11:02 am
@Jim Richardson:
“Would be nice if you included credit lines for the photographers. [...]“
Hold the mouse over the image and it pops up after a second or so, and they do link back to the author’s gallery on Flickr, etc.
February 18th, 2012 at 11:12 am
Jim – we use Flickrs own embed codes for these images and only use those which are licensed for sharing (unlike many photography sites that rip them regardless). I’m not sure why Flickr doesn’t include a text about who the author is in their embed code – however if you do wish to find out more we encourage you to click the photo to be taken to the photographer’s flickr site.

I love all the images, some of them are look suprised. Especially, the last image.
February 18th, 2012 at 11:45 am
Absolutely stunning photos. Is really like to see comparisons between these and the images before any post production. When I see pictures like this it just makes me think how bad my own are.

Thanks for selecting my wave pic as an example.
@ Biomech.
Always pping from my original raw files which can look pretty dull & lifeless. Sometimes only just a little (like a crop, levels & sharpening) others a lot more. The wave pic looked pretty good when shooting. Now days I sometimes envisage what the final outcome will be when shooting, like turning a cool winter sunset in to something that looks summery.

As previous contributors have already remarked, there are some wonderful photo’s here. Also though a few that look horribly manipulated and Photoshopped.
I suppose we can see this collection as an example of the ‘Do’s and Dont’s’ for a successful dawn shot.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:41 am
I sometimes see great photo opps of sunrises, morning dew, and fog during my morning commute, but regrettably it’s not practical to bring my 5D to the office or leave in the car. I do, on occasion, try to capture some of this morning beauty with my iPhone, as party of my weekly photo series. http://theartisticlife.wordpress.com/2012/02/09/weekly-photo-6/

February 24th, 2012 at 11:01 am
Awesome shots!!! This is my favourite time of day although sometimes I find its a little tough to get up and going in time to capture the perfect sunrise moment, especially in the dead of winter.
This is my favourite sunrise shot that I was lucky enough to be in the right place on Christmas Morning with ice crystals in the air forming a rainbow :

amazing pictures. are you sure you didn’t special filters in them? i realize some were shot in vancouver or around the area. i wish we could have tags of places where they were taken so more or less know how you compensated on your aperture or speed ….
February 24th, 2012 at 5:09 pm
Hi,
I am new to photography and have just begun clicking landscapes. These photographs are so inspiring and I am glad I stumbled upon your site by chance. I am learning so much from it. My suggestion is if we could have a tag of places where they were taken and the setting marks of apertures and speed, ISO could be mentioned. It will be great help for me to learn more. Thanks and kudos to the photographers.

Beautiful images!!
September 24th, 2012 at 1:44 am
I would say that dawn is great, but atmospherics are even more important. Fog, mist, clouds and the way light plays upon or through them would seem to be a major contribution to each of these images. I have, in the past few years, become aware of how important having clouds or mist or other atmospheric phenomena in a picture is to making a successful photo. Have you written a post on these things? Love your sight!
