It’s perhaps a little cliche – but we’ve all done it. A camera, a photographer in front of a mirror. Here’s 13 shots that caught our eye today with photographers, their cameras in front of mirrors (PS: this is the theme of the next weekly photography challenge – so get your thinking caps on and polish up those mirrros).

I really enjoy the 4th one down! As a child I would try and count how many times I would appear in the mirrors haha… Come to think of it. I need to get back to my inner child. Children have a way of looking at everything in life differently than adults and I do believe I just found my next idea to shoot! haha

I did a complete session where most images don’t show the mirror.

Cool images!

I took a photo like this recently, but before I uploaded it, I flipped the image in PhotoShop, just to showcase the type if camera I shoot with, instead of myself.

Those are some great shots!
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:00 am
I think these are neat shots to show WHO is the one that has the passion and they too are part of the project. I tried this one by chance one day not sure how it would turn out, and it ended up being on of my favorite the whole day !!

How fun! This just inspired me to re-do my social network “mirror image”…haha!
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:21 am
Thanks, I’ve taken a few self-portraits, mostly with my iPhone, but I always hide the camera. Now, I see how we can make the camera work for us within the shot.

These are truly fun to take. I agree above to reverse the image once in Photoshop or other editing software. It just has a nicer look to it with the words reading the correct way.

I have been shooting mirror shots (self portrait) for years, in fact I always shoot mirror shots on every trip that we go on. I have some great shots in countries all over the world, it’s great fun and memorable.

Love windows, mirrors, reflections and everything associated with them.
Took this at The Met in NYC last winter.

You do realize that some of the shots above are not actually mirrored self-portraits, but photoshops?
cambiodefractal and andres.thor are quite obvious.

In June I visited the Frank Gehry’s Stata Center at MIT.
It had a large reflective wall on an upper level outside that was making a watery pool of light on the brick courtyard in front of it. I couldn’t resist sitting in that puddle of sunlight and taking a distorted mirror shot of myself.

While shooting around Pier 47 in San Francisco, I wandered past a restaurant that had a highly reflective window – so I thought I’d get a shot of myself as a tourist

It took a few tries to frame it so the entire window was in the shot, and the only real hint that it’s a reflection is the Alioto’s sign in the upper left.
I also had some fun when I happened upon a jewelry mirror with my wide-angle lens – the resulting distortion of my limbs reminds me of a mantis!

September 3rd, 2010 at 4:33 pm
I admit I was a bit sceptic when I read the title of this post in the feed, generally I’m not a fan of mirror pictures… Probably because since facebook has become parts of our “web life”, many people use this technique to take self portraits (often with horrible results).
Now that I’ve seen those pictures -at least some of them – I have to say I was wrong! Great capture the “infinite mirror” one.
September 3rd, 2010 at 5:20 pm
Using two mirrors saves you from the mirroring aspects, something that just flipping the image in Photoshop does not do. You might not wanna end up a southpaw

I can’t see a single one of these images. I just see a beige box with a link to the image. Is anyone else having this problem at all? I tried contacting DPS help but I haven’t heard anything back. Can anyone let me know what’s going on?
September 3rd, 2010 at 9:46 pm
Sorry, not a link to the image, just a phrase saying “image by xxxxx” and unclickable.

Well… a lot of these picture are quite dull, aren’t they ? I mean, it’s ok to be cliché, ok to be self-indulgent sometimes, but dull…
Many of these could win a lot in meaning if they were put in a context, in an album, but where they’re left alone, it’s not very moving.
September 4th, 2010 at 2:45 am
Yeah these self portrait photographs certainly look fun! My favourite is the first one with the sony camera and the shaving foam!
September 4th, 2010 at 2:48 am

Awesome post, quite inspiring for me… I struggle with SP
September 4th, 2010 at 6:17 am
Wow – Such a variety of cameras and I think you all are so creative.
I wish I could think outside the box like that -
I guess that is why I stalk photography sites – hoping some of it will rub off on me!
Not sure I can do this self portrait thing though –
I much rather direct people to see the world and it’s limitless possibilities thru my perspective (among others) than to gaze on my personal imperfections.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:20 am
Why don’t people clean their mirrors? LOL! Might have to try a few different ones for my next self portraits….

@kate: I suspect you are trying to read DPS from inside the PR China. I tried the same recently and discovered that none of the images showed. It’s the Great Chinese Firewall that blocks out the images. Try to access DPS through a proxy server.
September 4th, 2010 at 11:58 pm
Perhaps I’m just in the right mood, but I don’t find these photos dull whatsoever. In fact, there are some, like the first one, that I continue to go back to for another look. The fact that we can see some faces of members here is a bonus. Thanks.

Some of the photos had some parts editing and this creates a really mind baffling picture. I get really confused looking at them because they somehow don’t seem to fit the laws of physics.
Interesting…

Why is it I can’t get a photo to appear yet most of the photos that do appear are shown 3 times?
September 13th, 2010 at 10:14 pm
@jnmnr – Almost every single photo that comes through comments gets held in the moderation queue. Some people become impatient and submit their photos three or more times, and on occasion, they all get through. I try to only put them through once, but sometimes there are hundreds of comments in moderation and I can’t remember if I approved one before or not.
Please… use the directions to post your image and then sit tight. If your photo doesn’t appear within 24 hours, then feel free to try again. But we go through the queue at least twice per day, so it WILL come through!

Lara,
Thank you for your reply. Posting an image 3 times in 24 hours is impatient. I’m using the link I copied from my facebook account to upload the image to your site but neither of the 2 images I’ve tried seem to work. Maybe you can tell me what I’m doing wrong.

Hi!

Thanks for some great tips on selfportraiting. We had ‘selfportrait with own camera’ for our last, informal competition in the Photoclub last week and after some trying, failing then finally sucseeding, mine came out like this:
