What Type of Photography Do You Do? [POLL]

0Comments

It is time for another of our polls – this one revisits a topic that we did a poll on back in 2009 – What Type of Photography Do You Do?

Please choose all categories that apply to what you do (as many as you like).

[poll id=”49″]

If there’s a category that you don’t see in the list – feel free to tell us about it in comments below.

  • Mostly I do urbex photography, but I suppose that could be called “architecture.” But not really.

  • Denise

While one of my answers was architecture, it needs qualifying — I love photographing historical ruins. And as well – dogs.

  • John

I was surprised that Flower or floral photography was not listed. I shoot for several large floral concerns and stay pretty busy with it.

  • John Weston

There are a few items that I enjoy but could only choose one so I chose wildlife.
    Regards John

  • Diana

The poll only allows one click. I would add to mine macro and street with the portraits. (Ah, see the fix in the 3rd post by dougs…)

  • Deborah Milton

Your survey wouldn’t allow me to enter more than one category.

  • Raphael

    Astrophotography FTW

  • Love shooting landscapes, but ever since I got my Fuji X100s all I’ve been shooting is street stuff.

    http://elindaire.zenfolio.com/p403951323

  • Irene Chiao

The poll isn’t working, only one can be selected. I chose Landscapes, Architecture, Street, and Travel.

  • The poll should have checkboxes that allow you to check as many as you like, rather than radio buttons that only allow one selection. There is only one on that list (fashion) that I have not done. Even better, allow the participants to check on a scale of 1-5 how often they do each: 1- never 2- rarely 3- sometimes 4- often 5- all the time.

  • Jim D

Other categories to add could be industrial and transportation – which I guess fall under industrial 😕

  • This really should of been a multiple choice, because I shoot just about everything besides weddings and children stuff.

Though I want to get into doing some more portrait stuff..just need to work on my communication skills..I’m horrible at it.

  • Paul Hogan

    this poll no workie.

  • My likes in photography are in the See.me link above! Landscapes, Birds and Serendipitous shots of all descriptions!

  • Debz

    Interiors (for real estate)

  • John Young

My computer only allows me to select one category.

  • Donna Lee

I photograph a lot of flowers and gardens, but not always macro. Maybe a “flora” category would be more appropriate for me. I know people who can turn a simple photo into a work of art, through editing. I would classify their work as being more of fine art, but that is not to say that other photographic works don’t fall under that category. A lot of these manipulated works of art seem to be more abstract, when completed. They may begin as a bowl of fruit, but after alteration, become a chiral wonder.

  • Stephen

I like to shoot landscapes (including creating panoramas), macros and wildlife.

  • And what about Documentary Photography?

  • Alan

    Poll not working properly
I could only select a single response, so chose Landscape, but I also like to photograph wildlife, buildings, live music and motorsport. Now I’ve got a phone with a cracking quality camera I may also try a bit of street photography, as I always feel self conscious pointing a DSLR at people on the street

  • Julien H

I chosed sports but I shoot more precisely motorsport. And some portraits too.

  • Roger Peaple

    Underwater photography

  • brad

The poll request is for ‘all categories that apply’. I couldn’t select more than one so didn’t respond.

  • Darryl

I have a fairly elderly camera – 6 mgp but with good lenses, and I have a Nikon Coolpix 10 mgp. I take the view that we can never view a scene at the kind of clarity that the new cameras and lenses show them. I this like to record the scene. I prefer rather composition, feeling and particularly black and white photography. Too many photographs are visually perfect and correctly exposed, with little or no feeling!

  • Eleanor

I photograph abandoned buildings and places, and I know I’m not alone. I’d love to see that option. Also, the reload/vote again option is cumbersome and confusing; if people can in fact vote for multiple categories, radio buttons are not the way to go.

  • HOOP

    Abstract Minimalism.

  • Tracy Lee

I do a lot of Night and pet/dog/horse photography

  • Mary Elizabeth Murphy

I broadly do all kinds of nature and lifestyle photography, but that’s not really supported in this poll.

  • Denise

It said to choose as many as fit but would only let me choose one. So I choose landscapes, but also do a lot of sports, wildlife, animals, some people, macro, sky/clouds, semi trucks and travel.

  • Nikhil Rawal

    I also do Astrophotography.

  • Linda Shepherd

Portraits is too broad a category! I specialise in pet portraits….would value some tutorials on this topic too. I see there are others here who have similar needs.
I agree only being able to select one category does not do justice to this kind of research. Photographers do not fit into a specific mould!

  • Vince

I could only choose one category?

    Landscapes, macro, travel,& wildlife.

  • Shannon Wilson

I would have liked to see a photojournalism or editorial photography option. I guess I can just choose all of them. I’m a photographer at a publishing company that publishes a newspaper and a magazine, so on a weekly basis I could do any or all of the options, except weddings.

  • Susan Pederson

    Also, travel, wildlife and macro

  • Andrew de Bere

    Abstract.

  • Janice

I like to shoot flowers. I am a floral designer and s\floral arrangements are great to photograph. If you choose the right flowers the colors are amazing and so great to zoom in on and blow up.

My list is not working !! Won't allow me to make more than one choice !!

  • Shack July 12, 2013 08:00 am

Underwater Photography is my favorite. I also photograph a lot of 5K & 10K runs in the Tampa Bay area.

  • aishling walker July 12, 2013 07:59 am

I'm not actually a professional photographer but its more just a fun sort of hobby that I picked up after receiving a very basic camera as a present one year nd since then my photography skills have greatly improved just by practice everyone who sees my pictures tell me they look professional even though they were only taken on a basic standard digital camera , I would say though that my photography style would be nature which is quite broad or even just what ever seems like it would make a good picture

  • Vivienne Johnson July 12, 2013 07:55 am

I take pictures of sculptures wherever I go in the world

  • Michael Kriegh July 12, 2013 07:41 am

I shoot all kinds of things, but my driving purpose is to shoot for images with "fine art" potential. I often substantially edit images towards certain content goals. They are often significantly altered from their original color, tonality, etc.

  • Mitch July 12, 2013 07:38 am

I have 7 cats. 90% of my photos are cats and kittens.

  • Tina Schwarz July 12, 2013 07:37 am

I shoot quite a varied spectrum of work which I like to call Retail Photography: I work with a business (mainly in the travel & hospo sectors) and create a whole image package for them to allow them to tell their story as a marketing tool. The subjects of my photography include products, portraits, land- / city-scapes etc So from your list I would include Travel, landscape, street, food, wedding, portrait, architecture, and motor, product ...

  • George Greenly July 12, 2013 07:24 am

The survey says pick as many categories as you want but it only accepts ONE!

  • (Andy) Charles Anderson July 12, 2013 07:09 am

I really do more than just one type of photography. In addition to landscape i do macro and wildlife.

  • Michael Merton July 12, 2013 06:44 am

To all those unable to leave more than one choice, read the third post, it explains clearly how to do it !!

  • Allen Pearson July 12, 2013 06:36 am

I am a Dog, Cat and Garden Photographer. Though "macro" fits my gardening work, it doesn't cover my dog and cat work. Guess I could have selected wildlife but I tend to think of that as animals in the wild, not domesticated pets.

  • Alfredo taylor July 12, 2013 05:36 am

I needed to select more than one category because I like to do what I call "out and about" which covers most subjects except portrait, children, food and weddings. Liked your article.

  • Michele July 12, 2013 05:26 am

I focus primarily on performance photography.... Plays and dance recitals, etc. I enjoy the challenge of emotional candid shots in lowlight stage conditions ..... No flash photography allowed :)

  • Ann July 12, 2013 05:04 am

Please add "fine art" and "commercial" categories, thank you.

  • Tony July 12, 2013 04:58 am

You could include 'Underwater': Some UW is wildlife but others could be and are shipwrecks etc.?

  • Nancy Jackson July 12, 2013 04:31 am

I was also only able to choose one and the date that's posting for all responses appears wrong (it's the 11th where I am). I enjoy all types of outdoor photography -- macro, landscapes, wildlife.

  • Dee July 12, 2013 04:21 am

I enjoy several and I'm trying to learn several more. But what about table top photography when you set a scene with fruit, flowers and or household items. (Perfect wet weather photography.)

  • Pete Bradshaw July 12, 2013 04:16 am

Editorial photography/photojournalism is one major area that was not on your poll which crazies like me engage to get "the shot" for the story.

  • jill July 12, 2013 04:04 am

    Can only choose one option!!

  • John McKay July 12, 2013 04:02 am

I was unable to select ALL. I do not do much fashion but do do some.

  • Helen White July 12, 2013 03:26 am

Cat and kitten photos for Cat Care Port Elizabeth - I love doing this as a hobby and to be able to help home all the cats and kittens in our care. Sometimes under very difficult situations where spaces are cramped and dark. Flash, even bounced off the ceiling, is not an option - it frightens the animals and hurts their eyes - so have to resort to high ISO and slow speed and hope for the best! Please have a look at the Cat Care Port Elizabeth facebook page for some photos.

  • Dianne July 12, 2013 03:16 am

I do several of these, mainly wildlife, macro, landscapes, imperfections, and even sometimes weddings and stop motion. All enjoyable!

  • Charles Brown July 12, 2013 03:10 am

Wish I could have selected more than one category – Landscape, travel, street, macro, even a bit of architecture.

  • Bev Anne July 12, 2013 03:05 am

Friends and family -- for memories.

  • Howard Stevens July 12, 2013 03:02 am

Taking photos of things I like when i see them, makes it difficult to fit into one of your selections. As the saying goes, "so many choices; so little time." No help to you I'm sure, but thanks for asking.

  • Jim McGregor July 12, 2013 02:58 am

Would be good to see if this has changed much since the 2009 poll. Please post results from both polls.

  • Michael July 12, 2013 02:34 am

I can't choose more than 1 category. Eeek.
and quote: Please choose all categories that apply to what you do (as many as you like).

Could only choose one category :-(

  • Russell Posch July 12, 2013 02:24 am

I take pictures of dogs at the municipal animal shelter and post them to rescue orgs on the internet. Most of the pictures are taken in dim light inside the shelter. I have a Sony Alpha 37 and usually use a 50mm f1.8 lens. If anyone has any tips or suggestion for me for this type of work I'd appreciate it.

  • Jeff Manghera July 12, 2013 02:21 am

Says to choose all categories that apply, but only allows you to choose one.

  • Bob Dumon July 12, 2013 02:15 am

I tried selecting multiple categories, but it would only allow me to select one, so I didn't take the poll.... When trying to submit this comment I received this rather rude instruction:

You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down.

  • rod konkin July 12, 2013 02:12 am

I prefer landscapes and architecture. I usually shoot bracketed and depending on the dof of the shot I want, I will carefully shoot 2 shots side by side to create stereo images. I use roxio 12 to create the images. For architecture, hdr really brings out
texture, but you have to be careful not go overboard.

  • Sam July 12, 2013 02:05 am

My number one subject to photograph is family.

  • Pahz July 12, 2013 02:04 am

One that isn't on there that I do- product photography (as well as macro, landscape, street, wildlife, portrait, and sports. The only sport I shoot though, is jousting).

  • Alex Wright July 12, 2013 02:02 am

The images that I take are photojournalistic and at Fort York. These are not on your list because they are specialized.

  • Mark July 12, 2013 01:57 am

I let my location decide the genre as I'm more likely to take my camera with me on a trip which serves another prime purpose, rather than making a trip with the sole intention of taking photos (and perhaps squeezing in a crafty pint).

However, when I do find time for a photo trip I tend to focus (no pun intended) on street life or urban decay.

  • Linda July 12, 2013 01:57 am

Would sunsets count as another category?

  • Jamie July 12, 2013 01:40 am

How about pet portraits? :) I do a lot of those.

  • Scott July 12, 2013 01:39 am

This poll needs to be republished as a multiple answer poll, either as a "Choose your top 3" or as many as you want. Very few photographers limit themselves to one of these types unless you are a very highly paid professional (Peter Hurley for example).

  • Jeff Cohen July 12, 2013 01:36 am

How about "Fine Art"? A lot of my photography is "recording" things like vacations and family events. However, what I really like is photography that is something else. I've done some nudes, but right now what I am photographing is what I call "edge". This type of photography has some tension built into it. For example, I might photograph a small child in a construction environment (safety first, always!).

  • Michelle July 12, 2013 01:36 am

I primarily photograph dogs, so I would say "pets" would be the category I fall under.

  • David July 12, 2013 01:27 am

More than one. I combine travel-landscape-wildlife. I do not do portrait but I do like to get people that indicate their culture on my travels

  • Victoria July 12, 2013 01:25 am

I photograph whatever I see on my photography excursion for that afternoon - nature (flowers, birds, animals), street photography (when I'm in the city) or occasionally landscapes, cityscapes and street art.

  • michael July 12, 2013 01:24 am

"what kind of photography do you do?" poll asking to "click as many as you like" only allows ONE selection. Just thought you'd like to know.

    Keep up the good work.

    M

  • DougS July 12, 2013 01:08 am

For those that want to select multiples. Refresh (reload) your browser and you can vote again. One category each vote.
That messes up the total respondents, but it gives a good spread over what types everyone does.
Landscape, Macro, and wildlife for me.

  • Sonny Greene July 12, 2013 01:07 am

    You forgot Product Photography

  • G.McLeod July 12, 2013 01:06 am

I mainly shoot ships so would be Marine. Most are against the light as I shoot facing SE-SW. There is a lot of reflection from the water under bright sun. Any suggestions ?

  • Cheila Brasil July 12, 2013 01:05 am

How about Pet Photography? I never see any related articles, polls, or books. :(

  • Dave Stephens July 12, 2013 01:04 am

The poll isn't working. I could only select one, so I chose wildlife, but wanted to add Travel and Landscapes.

  • Don July 12, 2013 12:57 am

Hard to choose just one. I like to do what I call nature photography which includes landscapes, macro, and just about anything I can shoot in nature. I also do a lot of travel photography when the situation presents itself. However, that ends up being more snapshots than serious photography in my opinion.
