Weekly Assignment

about a boyOur assignment that we finished this week was bluaries‘s Hanoi snapshot. This one really has a timeless charm to it, and the sepia helps contribute to that. In fact, you almost wouldn’t know just how modern it is if you don’t notice the cane, which really makes you take a second look.

This week we started our Wide Angle assignment. We are often told to get in close to our subjects so we get rid of distracting elements in our composition. This time try a wide angle and include more than just your main subject. As always, a quick reminder of the rules before you get started. First, your photo must have been taken between 29 September – 13 October 2010. Second, your post must include the words “Assignment: Wide Angle” and the date the photo was taken. Finally, your EXIF should be intact, and it’s useful if you can include some of the main details like the camera, lens, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc. Next week’s assignment is Treasure. What do you treasure in this world? An item, person, or ideal? Or perhaps you want to take the subject more literally in a “Johnny Depp/pirate” kind of way. Whatever it is, we want you to photograph your treasure for next week.

Hot Threads

  • When Would You Use f/22?: We know that you use a small aperture to get a large depth of field, but often you don’t need to go all the way to something like f/22 to get there. So when is it that you would use f/22? Come share your experience and thoughts over in the forum.
  • The More I Learn: One of the things that many of us experience is the feeling that as we start to learn more we actually start doing worse. But is it really a question of doing worse? Or is it just that we’re more critical of ourselves? Come share your thoughts over in the forum.
  • What Should Be on a “To-Do” List?: If you were just starting out and had to make a list of the things you’d like to photograph, what would you put on your photographic “to-do” list? Not the off the wall, once in a lifetime things, but just the “what should every photographer try” sort of ideas. Come share yours over in the forums.
  • What Would You Do?: Our what would you do challenge is back for another week. This is your chance to practice your post-processing skills on a forum member’s photograph. Check out the thread to see this week’s photograph and for instructions on how to get your photo included as the WWYD photo of the week.
