Weekly Assignment

Nature 2 (1 of 1) (by phillj10)For our first week of Black and White April, our assignment was kristin28630‘s azaleas. We liked the lighting in this, and how the black and white treatment made the details stand out. The flowers really suited this sort of treatment.

Transparency BW (by luv my pups)Black and White Leaf (by N3squick)We are continuing our month of black and white assignments with this week’s assignment with this article on the DPS Blog. If you’re looking for more general tips on black and white photos, check out the first post of this week’s assignment. As usual, a quick rundown of the rules for participating in the mini-contest. First, your photo must have been taken between 7-21 April 2010. Second, your post must include the words “Assignment: High Contrast Black and White” and the date that the photo was taken. Finally, your EXIF should be intact, and it’s useful if you can include some of the main points, and possibly some information about the post-processing, especially in an assignment like this. Next week’s assignment will be B&W – 10 Minutes From Home. If you look back, about 2 years ago we had a 10 minutes from home assignment. This is the black and white version of it. For this assignment, we want you to go exactly 10 minutes from home (regardless of how you travel), and shoot what’s there. Not 9 minutes, not 11 minutes, just 10 minutes, regardless of whether there’s a better shot a few feet down the road.

  • Best Method to Get Better: Whether you’ve reconnected with your inner photographer or you’re just getting started, you might be wondering how to get better. This question was posed in the forum recently. Come share your thoughts on the best ways to improve your skill with a camera.
  • Do You Ever?: One way that you can get better with your camera is to practice with it. So, do you ever just sit around with your camera, turning the dials or flipping through the menus, and generally just practicing without taking pictures? If not, maybe it’s worth a try, and for those who feel they’re confident with their cameras, why not come share how you got to there.
  • What Pro Photographer Do You Look Up To?: So, once you start getting to know your camera and reconnecting (or connecting) with that inner photographer, you may start looking to others for inspiration. This is the kind of question the comes up every once in a while, but it never really gets old as our skills and aspirations change. So come join us over in the forums and tell us which photographers you look up to.
  • Let’s Count to Ten: While WWYD is on break this week due to lack of photos, there are plenty of other games / challenges to highlight. This particular game challenges you to find photos of items that have the right number of subjects in them. The photos go from 1 to 10, and then start back over at 1. Check the thread to see what number we’re up to and try to find a shot of your own to keep the thread going.
