A review by Valérie Jardin
Some girls like shoes, I like camera bags! I find it hard to resist a new camera bag that can potentially make my work easier. I have my favorites: A compact backpack for international travel, a messenger style bag for casual photo walks and a heavy duty (almost too heavy to lift) bag for work, etc. I did not have a bag that could carry my camera and severals lenses as well as my iPad (or other Netbook type of device) yet!
The new Tamrac Rally 5 shoulder bag doesn’t look big but it can hold a lot! It is light weight and available in black or brown/tan. I have the brown/tan color and honestly, I don’t think it looks like a camera bag, which is alway nice when you don’t want to get too much attention on the expensive gear you carry around…
The Rally 5 holds your camera with lens attached in a vertical position for a length up to 6”. You can easily add a flash unit and another lens next to it and adjust the foam- padded dividers any way you want. I removed the dividers entirely once to place my camera with the 70-200 mm f/2.8 horizontally inside the bag and it fit just fine!
The iPad/Netbook compartment is also foam-padded and will hold any screen device up to 10.1”.
A large front zippered pocket will hold accessories, manuals and personal items. The Rally 5 also features an open pocket in the back and mesh side pockets for phone, iPod, pocket change, etc.
The flap closes with a hook and loop closure and a quick release buckle. The shoulder strap is adjustable and nicely padded. Yet, if I had to carry this much equipment all day, I would probably switch to my backpack for comfort.
I, like many other photographers, use my iPad as a portfolio to show my work to clients. Having this securely padded compartment within the camera bag has been useful and I have used it as a second bag on location shoots to carry back-up gear, my electronic portfolio as well as my wallet and other personal items.
The Tamrac Rally 5 comes with a 5 year limited warranty. The Rally Series includes smaller and larger models which you can see by clicking here. Get a price on the Tamrac Rally 5 at Amazon.
