Mac or PC Poll – Results

0Comments

In last week’s reader question I asked readers whether they use a Mac or a PC?

The point of the question wasn’t to determine which was better (we could debate and never get a conclusion) – but simply to ask what you use.

The results surprised me a bit – with the ‘winner’ being Macs with 60% of the vote.

Mac-Vs-Pc

Thanks to everyone for participating in the discussion. Stay tuned for a new reader question in the next few days (if you’ve got a question relevant to Digital Photography users that you want us to ask feel free to make a suggestion below).

  • You could have made the PC guy smaller, as it represents the smaller part of the results.

  • Franky

Or he could’ve made the Mac guy taller.

  • Mertle

    I use Linux. 😉

  • smartipants

I use both. Depending on what I’m working on, where I’m working, and what platform is available to me. =)

  • Ulf

I use Linux, too. What about adding a very little penguin to the image that just does his work while the two guys are debating? 🙂

  • Jon

Just curious…if the results surprised you, were you expecting more Mac users or more PC users?

  • “I use Linux. ;)”

Does this Linux run on a run of the mill PC? If yes, then it’s a PC. 😉

If it Runs on an an HP server or some fancy server equipment, then I rescind my statement.

  • Linux runs on PC hardware. MacOS runs on PC hardware. Both run on Intel chips (even in Apple hardware) and on PowerPC (like older Apple computers).

Please, let’s all call “Windows” just “Windows”, and let PC get its original meaning back: Personal Computer.

  • Keith W.

I use both; a Mac at work (I’m a graphic Artist for a newspaper), and a PC at home.

  • Since when you can install OS X on a PC?.. (without any emulation)

  • Max

but, on the other hand, you can install linux on Mac (pc) hardware. You are confusing operating system and hardware.

I run ubuntu on a Toshiba.

  • I run ubuntu on a PC , I run windows on my other PC , however, I use Mac OS on a Mac … built by Apple and not by some run of the mill PC manufacturer 😉

  • To add… the underlying hardware is irrelevant. A Mac is a Mac not a PC(windows, linux) regardless of the chipsets.

  • Klaidas: Since Max OSX runs on Intel chips. The architecture is the same. With some tweaking, you can have OSX running on PC compatible hardware.

    See http://www.osx86project.org/

  • I like penguins…

  • Linux, all about the ubuntu, hardware is irrelevant.

  • conholster

ArchLinux all the way… Gimp, digiKam and Xaralx. For quality and stability nothing beats ’em and they dont put a hole in your wallet…saves more money for photo gear too!

Hey how come the Linux chick didnt make it to your list? http://youtube.com/watch?v=MEYot8voTDM

  • Julian: yes, but with some tweaking :]

  • If you’re using a Mac as your own computer, it is a personal computer, hence a PC. Period.

  • Laura J.

    Tomaytoe . . . tomahtoe . . .

    Good grief!

  • AJ

Apologies for this but for all the Apple fanboys reading this after being directed from somewhere like Digg… I wonder what the result would be if we polled an economics school website on what machines/OS they use?

Surely it is a fairly well known that Macs are extremely popular in media production circles therefore this is not a surprise? I am not Mac bashing (I intend to ‘defect’ to Mac with my next computer purchase!!) but I don’t think it would be wise to take this into consideration.

For those of you not interest in this battle of wills… I apologize that you had to read this comment!

  • GENERALLY:

    Mac runs OSX

    Pc runs WINDOWS

But Macs can be made to run windows with the intel chips )or emulation on ppc chips)

Pcs can also be made to run OSX but a hacked version from the intel macs.

Pcs run linux normally but OSX is based on unix a type of linux, therefore Macs can also run it. And as the intel macs can run WINDOWS they can also run linux nativley.

    BUT GENERALLY PC=WINDOWS MAC=OSX

  • AJ – I’m sure you’re right – different groups of people would use different types of computers – no arguments here. The only reason I ran this poll was to see what the readership of DPS used – I’m not pretending that this represents everyone.

  • Hey AJ….ah, I work for one of the largest television production houses in London (UK) and we are windows based… (though, possibly will look at final cut pro HD soon – so maybe a sway) …Avid at the moment, though…

    Using a G5 Mac

  • both 🙂
i have a mac, and a couple of pcs
i do most of my raw image processing on the mac, and some on the pc, because i already have some tools on the pc

  • LINUX for me

  • Seb

How does this compare to your webstats?

  • Baldu

I’m using PC with Ubuntu… iMac (Intel, first generation) with Mac OS crashed every week with cleanup of my hd ;-/

Linux on iMac doesn’t work, so I’m using a ordanery PC

  • Acekyoto

Linux Mint here. Its funny how people confuse a brand name with a device. Any else have a grandma who ‘hoovers’ the floor?

  • Ulf

    > Any else have a grandma who ‘hoovers’ the floor?

No, but mine is googling the web. 🙂

  • Luke

i am on a mac, and i can tell you that these results are only because Mac users love to travel the world and proclaim that they are on a Mac and that they are better (inferiority complex), while PC users could care less about telling people what they’re using, because truthfully, NO BODY CARES WHAT YOU ARE USING.

  • Hamish

I don’t understand why Windows is refered to as “PC” I believe that os x is more personal than windows XP. I use both and use os x for many things such as music and photo organisation and windows XP for gaming and playing around with programming lanuages and such.

beyond the hardware etc etc blah blah blah,…(yes Mac may be YOUR personal computer, nevertheless it is Called a MAC) so just answer the question; PC or Mac. I use a PC however I intend on purchasing a Mac specifically for my photography fun.

  • Andrew Miller

I use Macs, G5, Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server and Pac Book Pro. I run Windows XP on the G5

  • TMWDSi

If I owned a Mac, I would probably Bootcamp to Windows, and dualboot Windows and Mac. I can’t be on a *nix OS for more than a day, because I miss my Windows-only programs. Of course, I tried XP in VMware, and it ran some programs perfectly, but my 3D games lacked playability.

    Mac definitely.

  • Mac all the way. Sorry windows, you just, well, suck.
