dPS Self Portrait Week Challenge: Sign Up and Receive a Free Gift

UPDATE: This week’s challenge is now over. You can still sign up for the free Social Media Avatar Guide below. Also check out Anna Gay’s new eBook – The Art of Self-Portraiture.

Today we’re launching a fun week long challenge here on dPS and we’d LOVE for you to join in.

social media avatar tips.jpgThe theme is ‘Self Portaits’ and over the next week we’ll issue you with 3 Themes to go away and photograph and to share the results with us.

We’ve approached renowned self portrait photographer Anna Gay who is known for her 365 self portrait challenges to be involved in choosing the themes and to help us all improve our self portraits.

Later today, Wednesday and on Friday Anna will issue the challenge and name the theme and then on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday she’ll choose an image that is her favorite and share some reflections on the shots submitted.

Getting involved is completely free – in fact if you do sign up to be involved we’ve got a little gift for you – a free report to help you take better social media avatar/self portraits.

The report is titled: ‘Tips for taking a Self Portrait for Social Networking Sites’ and it’ll not only help you take an eye catching image for your Twitter or Facebook avatar – but it’ll help you get the most out of this week long challenge.

To get notifications of the 3 challenges and to get a download link for the free report – simply add your first name and an email address to the form below (note: if you’r using ad blocking plugins on your browser you may not see the form and could need to disable the plugin and refresh the page).

Once you sign up you’ll get an email asking you to confirm your subscription to the challenge – just click the link in that email and you’ll be set to go.

Stay tuned for Anna to name the first theme in the challenge later today!

UPDATE: we’ve had a number of readers say that they’re not getting the confirmation email. Some are finding it in their spam filters while others say that its just taking a few hours to arrive. So please do check spam filters but if it doesn’t arrive feel free to contact us via our contact form and we can get you the download another way.

@George - Try right clicking and saving the link as a file to your hard drive. Some people above reported problems when trying to open the PDF in their browser by clicking on the link. Hope that works! It's a great little report!

  • George Castorena May 11, 2011 12:06 am

After signing up, I wasn't able to download the PDF. Is there another way I can view that file?

  • Nick Ryan May 10, 2011 11:59 pm

My conformation email was almost immediate :)

  • Deborah May 10, 2011 02:37 pm

    Can't wait to participate.

BTW, I got my confirmation email in about 2 minutes.

  • joann, sidewalk chic May 10, 2011 11:13 am

Thank you so much for writing this post. I've been doing my own self-portraiture for my style blog for a couple years now. It may sound weird to take photos of yourself everyday, but like you said, it is a great way to hone your skills quickly (without the help of others). I also like how a photo project can be a one-person show in this respect.

  • ejgiron May 10, 2011 09:30 am

no problem Darren.. the good thing is that we got them!

  • Darren Rowse May 10, 2011 09:20 am

sorry for the delay Ejgiron - not sure why but our system has been a little slow today, perhaps due to the thousands of signups we've had.

  • Ejgiron May 10, 2011 08:43 am

I received the confirmation email about 4 hours after subscribing, and verifying the url that came in the email it took another 3-4 hours to get a mail with the Props "instructions". Huge delay...

  • John May 10, 2011 08:02 am

PDF wouldn't open for me either when I clicked the link, but (in gmail in firefox on windows) when you right click - save link as, it will save the pdf which you can then open.

  • Dahlia May 10, 2011 07:57 am

Aw shoot, I've got work every day but Wednesday this week and an HTML assignment due on Friday :< Oh well, maybe I'll write down the themes and try them later on anyway =)

  • matthew May 10, 2011 05:11 am

@ Lara - Australia is a LITTLE scary, what with those wombats flying around. ;)

  • Kristin Jubinville May 10, 2011 03:56 am

I have tried with two different emails and have still not received any email and its been a couple hours

  • Jerry Adkins May 10, 2011 03:54 am

    I'm in...

  • JD May 10, 2011 03:45 am

And the first challenge is already up (PROPS) and no notification went out.

  • David May 10, 2011 03:40 am

    Nice. I'm ready! I'm ready!

  • Lara Kulpa - DPS Administrator May 10, 2011 03:39 am

@matthew - Darren's in Australia, that's why the date is different. He's about 16 hours ahead of the US east coast. Nothing spooky at all. ;)

@Lynda - Thank you for contacting them and then posting that here. I've alerted Darren to the issue and I'm sure he'll deal with this as soon as he wakes up, because as of this second it's only about 3:30am where he is! ;)

I suggest everyone sign up (ONCE) and ask kindly that you try to be patient. I'm sure this will all get worked out very soon. :)

  • Art-Profiles May 10, 2011 03:32 am

I’m really glad to know it’s not just me having a problem with the email sign-up lol

  • Richard May 10, 2011 03:31 am

    Same here, no email.

PS Matthew: DPS is based in Australia, where it is already tomorrow!

  • Audrey May 10, 2011 03:27 am

I too have not received the verification email. Is there a problem today and when will it be fixed?

  • Brandi May 10, 2011 03:21 am

I am having the same problem as well . . . no confirmation has come and it has been almost 2 hours.

  • Lynda May 10, 2011 03:19 am

I just chatted to an aweber service rep. They said the verification was sent and to check my spam folder, even though I informed them I did check my spam folder. (Hate it when customer service uses scripts and doesn't read and respond to what is written.)

I let them know everyone was having the same problem with this specific list. They said the website owner would need to contact them directly to resolve it.

  • Matthew May 10, 2011 03:14 am

    It's a cool idea!!

  • Lynda May 10, 2011 03:11 am

@Joe - Well, I'm sure since everyone is having this problem something will be done about it eventually. :) Aweber's problems are not something Darren could have anticipated, I'm sure.

  • Li May 10, 2011 03:06 am

I would love to do this challenge....I signed up, it said it would send me a verification email & I never got it :( I check my junk mail just in case & nope...Its been about 2hrs so I figured maybe there was an error so I tried again...It told me I signed up & need to verify!!! RRRRRRRR!!!!! so now what?????

  • Helen May 10, 2011 03:01 am

Also having same problem as others... still waiting on verification email!

  • Joe Strouth May 10, 2011 03:00 am

I figured I'd give it a while as these mailbots can take time. But no such luck. I have received no verification email at all.

Lame. :( especially since so many people seem to have taken an interest here.

  • Erik May 10, 2011 02:59 am

I too am experiencing the same problem

  • Rob May 10, 2011 02:59 am

    Same problem for me.

  • Erik May 10, 2011 02:58 am

I too am experiencing the same problem

  • Lynda May 10, 2011 02:58 am

I'm really glad to know it's not just me having a problem with the email sign-up. :)

  • Matthew May 10, 2011 02:54 am

PLUS, it's showing our posts as coming from the future! It's only May 9, Darren! Spooky!

  • Matthew May 10, 2011 02:53 am

SAME deal...contacted your email service - Weber Com., said they saw that I'd submitted something and they pushed out an email, but so far NADA! Something ain't working. I tried 4 times with 3 different emails.

  • Bill Waggoner May 10, 2011 02:52 am

I haven't received the verification email either and it won't let you request another one for 12 hours.

  • fran May 10, 2011 02:49 am

I've got the email, but the pdf doesn't open!

  • ejgiron May 10, 2011 02:36 am

  • Debbi May 10, 2011 02:30 am

I am having the same problem :(

  • saraht May 10, 2011 02:20 am

Same problem. I tried two different email addresses.

  • Rebecca May 10, 2011 02:09 am

I am having the same problem as Lynda. I would really like to subscribe in time for the challenge, but I'm not getting the email in either my inbox, or my spam. I tried two different emails too.

  • RML May 10, 2011 01:55 am

i have suscribed but i haven´t received any mail to confirm that!
    how long schould i wait!?

  • Mike May 10, 2011 01:53 am

I signed up to get the email - but have yet to receive it. It did not get spammed. I'm posting a comment in hopes that if sign up isn't working, this may substitute as my request to join the challenge! Thanks!

  • Jim Martin May 10, 2011 01:49 am

I haven't received a verification e-mail yet either. I'm looking forward to rising to meet Anna's challenge!

  • Heather May 10, 2011 01:39 am

I too have not received a confirmation email yet.

  • Maggie May 10, 2011 01:36 am

I encountered the same problem as Lynda

  • Lynda May 10, 2011 01:24 am

This is awesome. I'm doing a Self-Portrait 52 week project this year and can't wait to see what you have in store for us this week!

Unfortunately I tried subscribing to the list earlier this morning (over an hour ago) and no verification email was sent to my inbox or spam. It just wasn't sent at all. I tried filling out the form again and got an error that I need to verify my email address and cannot attempt subscribing again for another 12 hours. :(

I sent an email to aweber. I hope I can subscribe in time for the challenge! :(

  • carrie evans May 10, 2011 01:22 am

is there a delay on the email verification? Been waiting a little bit. Checked spam, all that jazz. Just really excited about this!

  • Lucy May 10, 2011 01:17 am

I have not recieved the email to active my self portrait page, what should I do?

  • Joe Strouth May 10, 2011 01:09 am

I look forward to doing this. When I got the email, I thought it was going to be some sort of community based 365 challenge, but this looks even shorter and sweeter. Good to see you got an awesome photographer interested and involved on this one!

  • Ashley May 10, 2011 01:00 am

I want to sign-up. Not sure if this is where I am supposed to.
