Mirrorless cameras offer a host of flashy features – high-resolution electronic viewfinders, intelligent autofocus modes, and lightning-fast continuous-shooting speeds, to name just three – but for many Nikon users, major reasons to stick with DSLRs include the breadth, depth, and cost of the lens lineup.
Don’t get me wrong; Nikon offers an excellent mirrorless lens lineup, which features some of the sharpest, fastest, and most innovative models the company has ever produced. But while Nikon’s Z-mount glass is certainly impressive, the overall number of lenses is still relatively small, and the lack of specialty lenses (e.g., super-telephoto models) is limiting for plenty of photographers.
And then there’s the cost: Z-mount models tend to retail for significantly more than their DSLR counterparts. For example, at the time of writing, the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II costs $2100 – while the mirrorless version, the Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S, is listed at a whopping $2700. (Yes, you can adapt Nikon F-mount lenses to work on Z-mount cameras, but the adapter costs a chunk of change and can be inconvenient to use.)
Fortunately, however, Nikon Rumors is reporting that Sigma, the third-party lens manufacturer behind the vaunted Art lineup, will begin releasing lenses for Nikon Z-mount cameras in the new year. NR claims to be “very confident that [the rumor] is accurate,” and notes that we should get an “official announcement…at the CP+ show in Japan in February 2023.”
While NR hasn’t offered any specifics regarding upcoming Z-mount lenses from Sigma, it’s still outstanding news for Nikon fans. Past Sigma lenses have offered high-quality optics and robust designs, not to mention cheaper price tags – which should certainly help consumers looking to grab a few Z-mount lenses without breaking the bank. Sigma lenses are especially useful for serious photographers in search of professional sharpness but who can’t afford pro-level prices.
