Canon will announce two new RF-mount cameras in the first quarter of 2023, says Canon Rumors, writing that “Canon is going to make a big splash in Q1 of 2023…All signs point to 2023 being a big year for Canon’s imaging lineup.”
But what, precisely, does Canon have in store? CR claims that one of the upcoming cameras will be the EOS R50, a potential RF-mount-equipped EOS M successor.
An EOS-M-style R50 would sit below Canon’s current entry-level RF-mount model, the EOS R10. While no specs are currently confirmed, it would presumably pack an APS-C sensor along with beginner-focused specs: a compact body, modes for easy operation, a fully articulating touchscreen, and decent video capabilities designed to appeal to vloggers and content creators. The camera may not have an electronic viewfinder – Canon eschewed this technology in many of its EOS M cameras for the sake of lower costs and a reduced form factor – though we might see an optional EVF à la the Canon EOS M6 Mark II.
I’d wager that the EOS R50 will cost less than $850 (the EOS R10 is currently less than $1000 with a kit lens), making it Canon’s first real budget RF-mount model and a potential option for casual photography and vlogging.
As for Canon’s second upcoming camera: Canon Rumors notes that it “is unknown at this time” but goes on to speculate about a possible EOS R5S, a long-rumored, 80+ MP model that would appeal to landscape photographers, commercial photographers, and other serious shooters looking to produce huge prints or do extensive cropping. Another possibility is an EOS R7C, a video-centric version of the Canon EOS R7, though CR doesn’t “expect [the R7C] until later in 2023.”
Regardless, Canon users should gear up for an exciting start to the new year, especially those in need of an entry-level mirrorless model that can utilize Canon RF lenses. According to CR, we should anticipate the releases “before the CP+ show…in late February” – which means consumers shouldn’t have long to wait.
