I love hearing the back story on how Pro photographrs go about their work and so videos like the above one are a great way to fill in 10 minutes of time. This one features Pro Photographer John Keatley who describes himself as a Stylized Portrait Photographer.
John uses a Hasselblad H3D2 – a Digital Medium Format camera with 80mm f2.8 and 50mm f3.5 lenses. He also uses a Canon 5D Mark II – 50mm f1/4, 35mm f1.4L mm and 70-200mm f2.8 lenses.
I loved some of what John says about grabbing the attention of those looking at his images by avoiding smiling subjects – creating something that makes people look twice in his portraits simply through expressions. There’s also some great ideas on lighting, working with subjects (including celebrities) and some interesting insight into a project he photographed in Liberia.
See more of John’s work on his website. Thanks too to Adorama for another interesting video.
