This guest post has been submitted by Martin Gommel (Flickr) from the blog KWERFELDEIN.

There are many many thousands of photographers showing their work online – but those, which stand out with high quality against the masses are only a few in number.

To give you a list you can use as reference I collected 99 online photography portfolios, which I consider inspiring, refreshing and remarkable. I hope that you enjoy them.

I've only managed to click through on a few so far, but already I'm disagreeing with the post.

The ones I've seen so far are terrible portfolios. Yes they contain fantastic photos, but the portfolios are horrible. (bear in mind that a portfolio is how you present the work, not the work itself).

So far I've seen a site that looks like it was designed in the early 90s, a flash intro capable of inducing an epileptic seizure, badly designed navigation, poorly presented photos, sites far too focused on the site design, which ends up outshining the photos, I've even seen frames being used!!! There are a few nice ones, but surely we need to draw a line between good photos and a good portfolio.

I guess most of these people have years of experience and photos so good they will outshine the worst presentation.

  • KaiKaiKai April 30, 2011 02:16 am

very awesome portfolios, thanks for sharing!

I particularly like the image depicted on the Cosmin Bumbut featured website. I can imagine this would work very well as a newly wed shot, with just married and tin cans draped across the the rear of the wedding car...

"Right, now were married, this is how things are going to be."

Like where I am coming from, why not check out my website at: Birmingham Wedding Photographer a UK based up and coming wedding photographer.

Great List of portfolios here I really am searching for this list and would love to get some ideas about creating one.

  • luc grubny June 19, 2010 10:29 am

very nice choice of portfolios. i think my favorite must be Tim Flach - truly original and one of a kind stuff. I have my own favorite when it comes to completly different genre. It can be pretty chalenging to be an expert at food photography but new york based still life photographer lucas zarebinski has really an eye for a clean , dramatic and strong shots.

  • Jacques February 19, 2010 02:44 am

Nice list, thanks for sharing :)

Here is my input regarding the creation and design of a website in general:
that's a point every photographer is confronted to, soon or later , and beside the costs for the design , which can be quite high, there's a work to do on yourself about what you want to show , how to present it, what message or image of your work you want to carry. That's a work as big as making the pictures themselves and a webdesigner can eventually guide you with that but it's not his work, it's yours, you have to do your homework first!
Few months ago I discovered a photosharing site called DarQroom that lets you show your work in very high quality galleries, similar to what you'd get from a professional web designer but at a fraction of the cost and with a very useful level of flexibility(you can publish/unpublish images or whole portfolios, reorganize the order of the pictures...)
I would not say it could replace completely a personal website with the highest level of customization associated to it but I personally see it as a great step to go there since it helps you setting-up the very first phase of a website creation, which is a work on yourself.

If you already have your own domain name, you can simply add a link on it , to your full-screen DarqRoom gallery.
Also DarqRoom is a photosharing site so it gives your pictures an additional public exposure and the access to an immediate feedback from visitors, which helps when you are in the experimental phase of your website creation.
For those who want to check how it looks, here is the link:

  • Werner September 10, 2009 09:39 pm

Wow, their work are really good. I would like to get my portfolio and website up to their standard.

  • Joerg Dauerer July 30, 2009 04:17 am

Wow: This is a *huge* selection. Lots of very interesting and inspiring sites!

I tend to repeat what another guy said before: I am missing my own website:

Obviously I like the images shown there (I am not going to argue about image quality here - that is always a matter of personal taste of course).
I did spent quite some effort to make the site easily accessible and easy to navigate without using flash or java while still having an interesting design.
I personally do not like when I enter a website, it takes ages before anything happens and then I have no clue what I am supposed to do to see e.g. the images of a portfolio.
I really hate it when a website resizes the browser windows or (even worst) when it starts to play music.
All that I do NOT do on my website - just have a look.

  • marie dylan July 14, 2009 09:09 pm

  • matt grund March 5, 2008 02:27 am

    This guy rocks as well!

  • Fort Myers Photographer February 27, 2008 06:29 am

This is a great list of photographers! I hope we can make it to the list one of these days!

  • Roland February 12, 2008 04:35 pm

The problems with IE6/7 are caused by the exact positioning of the tag within the list of names -- in each case the tag should be moved down three names. That means that the Bumbut image needs to be moved down three and the Flach six names because of the transitive rule. There's not enough space between images.

  • Ra February 12, 2008 01:10 am

He is a very good friend of mine, but i adore his photography.

I would like to point out that there is a mispelling -

Jeremy Cowart is his name - not "coward."

  • Fraser December 14, 2007 01:55 am

Some great portfolios in there and i'm only a third through.

I hope no one has mentioned these guys previously but i think Tim Tadder and Chase Jarvis deserve a mention:

  • Ben Tomlin December 12, 2007 07:23 pm

This list is an excellent source for Ideas for people to study in my Photography A Level, I've consequently saved this page onto my hard drive so i don't lose the links. thank you

  • Matt December 11, 2007 01:39 pm

Flickr is NOT an artist portfolio.

  • Michael Manz December 11, 2007 12:36 pm

Fantastic list! Can't wait to see them all. Shoulda added http://www.billsimonephotography.com. His stuff is way sicker than Dave Hill's.

  • zafer December 10, 2007 04:42 pm

My vote goes to: Frans Lanting.

  • Taschmahal December 8, 2007 02:15 am

Hi. What about peerbrecht.com? I like his photos!

  • Myles Cullen December 8, 2007 01:00 am

    Great list!

Is there any chance of getting a list of quality web companies that specialize in making these types of portfolios?

    Happy Holidays

  • martin GOMEZ December 7, 2007 02:46 am

thanks for this list, I am a argentinian photographer and I'm always looking for something like this....thanks a lot!!!

  • Dan December 6, 2007 10:14 pm

I love how this generates so much interest and controversy. I can't believe you put in X.. How dare you miss out Y.. Everyone is passionate about it! I'd like to add one of my friends, she is young and I think one to watch. Her photography has come leaps and bounds in the last 15 months and will continue to improve. Her name is Jo Briggs and her website is http://www.jbriggs.co.uk/.

  • Karen December 6, 2007 01:03 pm

All I can say is wow. What a delight. This one is bookmarked for sure. Thank you Martin for putting this together for us to enjoy.

  • Mary December 6, 2007 04:24 am

I'm with George Smith. I hate it when a page resizes my browser. i won't even look at a page if it does that.

  • markgamon December 5, 2007 10:24 pm

Sorry. Not the first comment above. It's further down the list.

  • markgamon December 5, 2007 10:24 pm

Nope - I use Internet Explorer. I thought it might be because the site was optimised for Firefox. Ah well - I can just about click on the hidden links, I've discovered. I just don't know who I'm choosing because I can only see the first letter in their name.

In response to the first comment way above this, are we really still having the 'photoshop manipulation' debate? You point a camera at something, you're manipulating: there is no such thing as an objective photographic image. W. Eugene Smith was one of the world's greatest, and he manipulated his negs like crazy in the darkroom. Other people manipulate their images at the point of capture, using flash, multiple exposure, make-up, and even their choice of film stock. What's the difference if someone chooses to do the same in the digital darkroom, using photoshop?

  • Kol Tregaskes December 5, 2007 08:52 pm

Works fine on mine, what version of Firefox are you using?

  • markgamon December 5, 2007 07:26 pm

That's an excellent list. Just one comment - on my screen the overlay boxes for Tim Flach and Eric Olmas are sitting on top of the text list. So I'm missing about 30 photographers! I'm guessing this has something to do with firefox (I use IE). Any chance of fixing it? All the best, Mark

  • joop December 5, 2007 01:28 am

because he still shoots mostly film in a digital world.

  • Duygu December 4, 2007 03:42 pm

    Erdal Kınacı

  • omar December 4, 2007 02:52 pm

How does a man who heavily manipulated his photographs using photoshop gets to be number one? And I think Reed Young should be up there among these photographers!

  • Cindy December 4, 2007 09:39 am

    www.johneric hawkins.com

  • George L Smyth December 2, 2007 04:16 am

Many of these are nice, but too many of them have annoying websites. I hate to have my browser resized, and a number of them I just bailed from because the Flash took so long to load. Thanks for the list, however, as some of these are excellent examples.

  • Arkadiusz December 2, 2007 03:48 am

I would like to be there as well...

  • Kol Tregaskes December 2, 2007 02:27 am

Oops, you have Julia Fullerton twice in the list, so it's only '98 Remarkable Photographer’s Portfolios'.

  • ShoShots.com December 2, 2007 12:01 am

I like ShoShots.com then again I am a little bias
    Or a Resource Site Like

  • Ian December 1, 2007 11:04 am

Thank you so much for this work, I am very appreciative, this has given me many new ideas! I would love to see some of Abe Morell's prints added to this great list. Some of my favorites are his camera obscura photos. http://www.abelardomorell.net/photographs.html
    Thanks again

  • PRH December 1, 2007 10:35 am

not sure whether the list is supposed to reflect current and past photographers or just photographers who have their own website. Ansel Adams on this list and he died in '84.

If you want to add master photographers, you can't go past Cartier-Bresson (amazing street photographer) and Robert Capa (the inventor of photojornolism!!? Most famous for images of the spanish civil war and d-day landing)

They were the founding members of Magnum Photo (see website www.magnumphotos.com/photographers)

You missed Joe Cornish, however. Perhaps just as his web presence isn't too strong. I must remember to mildly ridicule him when next I see him! lol

    regards Mark

  • Bonnie S. November 30, 2007 05:53 am

The image from Tim Flach is covering numbers 82 - 90. I'm using Windows XP.

  • Jared A. Wolf November 30, 2007 05:36 am

I'm really enjoying the work of Paul Calver. His website is also a great example of a non-ordinary flash-based web portfolio.

I'd like to add one of my fav. photographers.

  • Donncha O Caoimh November 30, 2007 02:30 am

Oh, and really, asking for photographers to name their favourite photographer's portfolios? I think we may see a lot of self-promotion in the comments! (Go on, visit my blog then!)

  • Donncha O Caoimh November 30, 2007 02:29 am

I recognise a few names there. Ansel Adams of course, and the infamous Jill Greenberg. The rest are new to me. It's going to take me a while to look through the rest!

  • Scott November 30, 2007 02:23 am

Thanks! This is a great way to gain some inspiration!
