'Wide Open': Weekly Photography Challenge

‘Wide Open’: Weekly Photography Challenge

Buckman Flair PromoThis week your photographic challenge picks up on this weeks image collection – 25 Dreaming Images Shot Wide Open.

The images in the collection were all shot with large Apertures. Remember a large aperture (a big wide open hole in your lens) translates to a low number. So the shots all taken in the image collection this week were taken at between f0.95 and f1.8.

You might not have a camera that has an aperture that big – but your challenge this week is to use the largest aperture you have available to you and to take and share a shot at that.

The result will hopefully be an image that has as Depth of Field as possible. Note: there are other factors that also impact depth of field.

This challenge can be used in many types of photography – portraiture, street photography, macro photography, still life, food photography… etc

Once you’ve selected the ‘Wide Open’ image that you’d like to share – upload it to your favourite photo sharing site or blog and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

Remember these challenges are not just about finding pictures in your archives to share – we’d really love to see you getting out your camera and taking a new photo – after all that’s what dPS is about, helping you take better shots rather than just celebrating past shots.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSWIDEOPEN to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks challenge – Hands challenge where there were some great shots submitted.

Here’s a few more ‘wide open’ shots to get your creative juices flowing – they’re mainly shot at f1.2.

Here's a little squirrel shot at f1.8 which is the widest aperture I have.

I have my eye on the 50mm f1.4 lens, but I'm having a hard time justifying it since I have the 50mm f2.5 compact macro lens. Do I really need both?

This challenge actually got me out in the yard with my 16-35mm F2.8 L II for some fun... it's amazing what you can find to shoot right in your own yard if you look around!

Darren, thank you for getting me out to try something I may never have done on my own! I probably took about 300 frames of bugs, the railings on my deck (which made for some fascinating perspective shots with bokeh surrounding a narrow DoF), bugs, leaves, flowers, tree bark, even my bbq grill (rust on black... gorgeous!)

Here are a few of my faves:

This is from the Rockstar Throwback Throwdown in Breckenridge, CO. What I love about this photo is the snow spray and nose of the board grabbed the focus of the camera (70-200 @70 @2.8). You still get the idea of what is going on, but it also gives a sense of motion.

PS: Darren, it would be great to be able to see the photos without clicking away from the page. Would it be feasible to fix the embedding feature?

    Fingers crossed that this works.

2.8 is the widest I can get with my Macro lens. Used it to get close to a tulip:

    Feel free to comment.

  • Thomas G. April 14, 2012 10:15 pm

Took this one the other night after seeing the lead-in post. Still waiting on Nikon to fulfill my 50mm F1.8, but this is wide open at 300mm.

    Taken today with a 5D mark 3 and 85mm f1.2:

This shot from last weekend at f1.4 worked out pretty well too:

(Sorry if this ends up being a double post)

  • Scottc April 14, 2012 08:11 am

Razor thin at F/2.0. This was shot for another project, not as creative as the examples but the focus area is spot on.

    Great subject for this week.

I love this challenge! Gonna have to get out and shoot some fruit blossoms this weekend.

Here's some recent work in a sound studio. The low light conditions made the 50mm f/1.2 lens ideal:

Here's a senior portrait I did at 1.8 that I was pleased with. Qualifies I think for both "wide open" and "dreamy"
