Weekly Assignment

This week we finished the Ayame for her ghostly picture in the shadows (which really needs to be seen bigger!).

Shadows (by Jill VandenDriessche)twinkle twinkle little bush (by falafelicious)This week’s assignment is Monochrome. Monochrome means:
1. A picture, especially a painting, done in different shades of a single color.
2. The art or technique of executing such a picture.
3. The state of being in a single color.
4. A black-and-white image, as in photography or on television.

In order to be eligible for the mini-contest, your photo needs to have been taken between 27 February – 12 March 2008, your exif must be intact, and your post must include “Assignment:Monochrome” somewhere. Good luck! Next week’s assignment will be Construction.

Weekly Poll

This week, we asked forum members if they take more photos during the weekends or the weekdays. Weekends won out only slightly, which means that a lot of people are out there during the week taking photos!

velvet4269 was one of the weekend people and said: With the exception of a random day off during the week, or my week-long vacation (where I’m virtually out every day possible), most of my photos come from the weekends. I’m at work from 8AM-5PM (or later) most of the week, so that makes it pretty difficult for me to get out and take photos (not to mention, by the time I’m done with work, all I want to do is pass out).”

But Saralonde said: “Although I take shots everyday, there are more taken during the week (5 days as opposed to 2). Also, my family is together more on the weekends (no work, kids home from school) and we do other things together besides photography.”

This week, why not tell us whether you use flash or natural light more often.

Hot Threads

  • Prime Lens: 35mm or 50mm?: Well, the question says it all, but this thread asks for opinions about which prime lens you would get. If you have experiences with these two prime lenses why not stop by the thread and offer your opinion as well.
  • 7 Days: So maybe threesixtyfive and fiftytwo are even too much for you to commit to with self-portraits, but what about only one week? Wulf tells us about a Flickr group that helps people ease into the idea of taking self-portraits with running self-portrait weeks where people sumbit 1 self-portait per week. Why not check it out if you’re trying to figure out if you’d want to do a 52 or 365?
  • Has Anybody Tried the TrekPod: Tripods are always being mentioned as one of the key pieces of photographic equipment that you can have, but one member wants to know if anyone has had experiences with the TrekPod, a monopod that can also be used as a walking stick. Stop by this thread if you’ve used one or with your general opinions on the usefulness of monopods.
  • Lack of Inspiration: We all suffer from it at one time or another, but what happens when you just run dry of ideas and can’t figure out what you want to take pictures of to get your photography back where you think it should be? This thread offers some suggestions about how to get some inspiration back and how to deal with it when you lose it for a little while.

Other Threads to Note

Classic Rock Challenge is back and better than ever. This week’s challenge is to use either the album title or a song title from Jeff Healy’s “See the Light”. The photo can be new or old, but if you think that it fits one of the titles, come share it in the thread.
