The Rule of Thirds: Weekly Photography Challenge

0Comments

This week your photography challenge is to utilise the most common photographic composition rule – the Rule of Thirds.

Portland Maine Ocean Lighthouse

While I’m not big on ‘rules’ – there’s definitely some good reasons to know this one and to be able to pull it off (and of course there are times to break it too). So lets practice implementing it this week!

You can use it in any type of photography you like – portraits, landscapes, sporting, macro, animals, food…. whatever you like. Just make sure you adhere to the principles of the Rule of Thirds when composing your shot.

Rule of thirds

Once you’ve selected your ‘Rule of Thirds’ image/s upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

vivid flower

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSRULEOFTHIRDS to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in the last challenge – Patterns challenge where there were some beautiful shots submitted.

I have heard of the rule of thirds but probably haven't ever thought of it when taking photos; it's also difficult to get everything taking photos of birds. But I will try this one of a Muscovy duck. http://www.flickr.com/photos/marionlynne777/6776585653/in/set-72157629069139469/lightbox/

Used thirds to take many of these shots. I like offsetting them from the rule of thirds just slightly to force the eye to explore the picture. I feel like if you strictly to the rule of thirds your eye dismissed the image more quickly.

I always think this is a rule waiting to be broken but if there is a single object with a plain background then fair enough.
When I was last in South Africa I was experimenting with HDRs of wildlife and this is one of them:

  • jim January 28, 2012 02:29 pm

Shobhit, if youre talking about the beach shot then yes you are using rot. Nice work. When shooting landscapes make sure your horizons are horizontal. The beach shot is close. Im a huge stickler for myself of that and maybe I'll notice more than most. Sorry.

raghavendra, 2nd flower shot, no, its not using rot. First shot I would say no too. Its close but it's not imo. I say that because my eye is drawn directly to the center.

One way you can bypass the rot when shooting landscapes is when you use reflections.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/22176685@N07/5521152181/in/set-72157614272364682

Not a great example but the horizon is in the middle. I need to shoot more reflections.

The rule of thirds is really a lot more flexible than I thought when first starting photography. It really can be applied in many different ways as long as they amount to a "1/3".
