Take a Self Portrait [Weekend Photography Challenge]

Day 27 - threesixtyfiveOver the last couple of week’s we’ve run weekend photography challenges and had a lot of positive feedback from readers – so I thought it might be time for another one.

Whether you get it done or even discover this post on a weekend or later in the week isn’t really the issue – the idea is simply to give you something to go away and work on and to know that hundreds of others are doing the same thing.

This week’s challenge builds upon one of the hottest posts from this week – 7 Photography Projects to Jump-start Your Creativity – it’s to take a self portrait.

In that post Jennifer suggested the 365 Days challenge where by you shoot one portrait of yourself every day for a year. Of course this a massive commitment but I know many readers have participated in this challenge (and have gotten a lot out of doing it) but this weekend I want to take the ‘self portrait’ idea and set that as your challenge or task for the weekend.

Once you’ve taken your self portrait – upload it to a photosharing site and share a link to it in comments below.

PS: looking for some inspiration for your self portrait?

@terry, it's good but the eye is a bit frightening, what mood were you trying to do?

@Chenthil, absolutely perfect, very good is what I say.

I did this self portrait using the slow sync flash technique I read about right here at DPS. It was fun and helped me get over my hatred of being in front of the camera.

I also explained my technique here: http://nineacresphotoclasses.blogspot.com/2009/09/slow-sync-flash.html

  • Nate Gesner September 11, 2009 05:39 am

What the heck...here's one of my portraits.

  • Nate Gesner September 11, 2009 05:19 am

Well, this article caught my eye because I just set up a ghetto studio and tried a couple self-portrait shots this weekend. I was ready to jump in and see everyone's work when, to my dismay, I realized I would have to click on 50 links. Any reason why this wasn't created as a thread?

  • Josh Shankowsky September 11, 2009 05:01 am

A portrait of good vs. evil. Divided by a sword.
Lighting is of a desk lamp.

  • justin astafanous September 11, 2009 04:59 am

  • anya brewley September 11, 2009 04:48 am

  • BigPaul September 11, 2009 04:29 am

Well heres my attempt at a self portrait

  • Gary September 11, 2009 03:48 am

I am not sure if this is considered a self portrait with a giant lens in front of my face - but the camera has become a third eye so maybe it makes sense in the end.

  • Paula Fankhauser September 11, 2009 03:48 am

This was very interesting to do. Timer, position, lighting and a lot of guess work (at least for me). But it was fun!!! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3604/3421770112_974f6cb6d2_b.jpg

  • Harry B Wade September 11, 2009 03:43 am

shot with D300 sb600 and edit in photoshop..... :-)

  • Andrea September 11, 2009 03:06 am

Seems a bit self-centered to me but I get the best photos of "me as I am" this way.
    My Self
I've noticed people love to know what you look like so this is the easiest and fastest...I've tried to do the "glamourous" looking shots but the most natural ones look best to me.
    Thanks for the challenge!
I think I'll do one self-portrait shot a week. It'd be amazing to give future generations (if there are any for me! ;) )..

  • steph September 10, 2009 12:00 am

was visiting relatives and they had this room with amazing light spilling through opaque white windows. with no other subject around, i had to do a self-portrait instead.

  • Maatzey September 8, 2009 06:03 pm

Well I couldn't resist :) This is my last pic from my '52 times me' project... well not the best one, but I really enjoy this!
Now Darren will have to collect all these photos in one article, as it is really annoying to open each link to see all your work.

  • heroutdoors September 8, 2009 05:31 pm

My second attempt - the first seems to have evaporated into thin air. Not sure what i am doing wrong.
Hope I get it right this time and am not too late.

Taken while at work at the ambulance station, with my Canon XSI, kit lens, and 430EXii flash set to second curtain. 10 second exposure, while I held the camera at arm's length, and spun around in the office chair. Boy, was I dizzy!!!--this was about the 10th attempt!

    Hi everyone!
I'm doing a 52 week self-portrait project on flickr. This is my entry for this week:

  • Iris September 7, 2009 05:30 am

Okay, my first participation at DPS' weekend challenges:

Not good at taking self portraits, but I liked the challenge. Also thought about the an article I read about 'framing'...

    Have a marvelous Sunday afternoon...

  • Tech Per September 7, 2009 05:29 am

I got inspired by the "photography projects" post, and started a "30 days of self portraits" project running from the 1. of september.

was having fun (under very hot weather...) with the silhouette given by sunlight shining through my living room doors...
then~ i saw this post! absolutely the best timing for my first ever photo here and flickr!

  • Gordon McKinlay September 6, 2009 11:11 pm

Here is my attempt at a self portrait - I tend to feel very self conscious sue to an eye defect so this picture manages to remove that!

  • Anya Brewley September 6, 2009 10:54 pm

I have been doing the 365 project for about 40 days now...its getting tough, but it has brought out a lot of emotion that I didn't know I could get on film, at least not out of myself. I have always hated having my pic taken. This pic I took on Friday morning after my 6month year old work me up for "breakfast"

  • anuj lal September 6, 2009 06:35 pm

my first dps assignment.................. a shot in my room many mnths ago just to kill the boredom!!

  • briliad September 6, 2009 04:45 pm

    Your not-so-typical id picture.

This exercise for the DP School exemplifies why I fell in love with photography. After taking a bunch of "normal" portrait shots, I noticed some eyeglasses lying around and just played around with it. I probably took around 50 shots because I was having way too much fun.

  • KenMaurer September 6, 2009 06:43 am

    Hi All,

The timing of this challenge was just right. Over the past few months I've been unmotivated with my photography. I was shooting alot of highschool baseball and kind of got into a rut. In the past couple weeks I have started to "get out" again. An airshow and carshow, went to my favorite lake for sunrise this morning. As the "ad" states "just do it". With that said, I shot a self portrait of me and my wife Joanne this morning as we prepare for College football weekend and our Huskers. I enjoy this site and the contribution by all posters. Go Big Red.

  • Daniel*1977 September 6, 2009 06:32 am

    done by accident:

  • Serge Claes September 6, 2009 06:06 am

Hah, Kris, that's pretty cool. :)

This could be a challenge - so far I've managed to keep the number of photos of me on the net to... 3. All on my wife's flickr account. Time to get creative I guess.

  • Kris September 6, 2009 01:19 am

  • Sune Trudslev September 5, 2009 04:26 pm

Here's my take on a self portrait. Taken outside on my balcony with the curtain as a backdrop. Used EOS Utility on my laptop to take the picture. Edited in Photoshop Elements, just a bit of cleanup, and a bit of burn tool in the edge of the iris to give et more of a glow. Converted to B&W. Here it is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/12227449@N05/3888427955/

Great idea Darren. I recently a post on Twitter by a guy that said he's more likely to follow people if they have a great photo of themselves - preferably smiling. Maybe that could be the goal of someone's weekend challenge: end up with a great shot to use for your avatar, twitter icon, etc.

I tried a funny self-portrait, someting very expressive and original. The exposure isn't perfect, I know...

Done this a while ago, still one of my favs, knel under my washing line at night, one sb600, commander mode on D90, spot metering. Edited in Lightroom 2

Not very original. Shallow depth of field so only my eyes are in focus. Looking up at my camera into a window for light.

Although I have been completing my own 365 Day project this year, taking an image of myself each and every day (the set can be found here http://www.flickr.com/photos/kvanlierop/sets/72157612169987427/ ) I think that I will actually spend the time this weekend to think about and take a proper shot.
