Panning: Weekly Photography Challenge

Panning: Weekly Photography Challenge

Your challenge this week is to take and share a ‘Panning’ shot.

Colorful Family

While we’ve done this theme before I thought it’d be a good followup to this week’s Panning Image Collection to which a number of readers said they needed more practice of the technique. Practice makes perfect so another panning assignment can’t hurt!

Before you grab your camera and head out to take some Panning shots – refresh your memory on how to take these kinds of shots with our tutorials on the topic:

Remember – you can apply this to many forms of photography. Photograph any kind of moving vehicle (bike, car, plane, train), photographing kids (the moving variety – running, on the swing etc), photographing animals (pets or wildlife) or anything else that might be moving around in your vicinity.

I can’t wait to see your experiments with panning!

Once you’ve taken and selected the ‘panning’ image that you’d like to share – upload it to your favourite photo sharing site or blog and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSPANNING to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks challenge – In the City challenge where there were some great shots submitted.

It was my first time to go to Kuala Lumpur, first time to watch the F1 Grand Prix live, and the first time to practice taking panning shots..thought this might be one of the decent panning photos I took of the race:

This was actually taken on a photography weekend in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, last year. The pro leading the weekend was doing an impromptu session on panning at a streetside coffee shop, and this was my second attempt!

I have a LOT of trouble with panning…I have as yet to get a single usable shot :( I'm going to try out again after reading the tips in the links but I have a feeling this isn't for everyone, even though I LOVE this effect.

My contribution to the weekly challenge. I had posted before but somehow it did not show if it does, appologies for the double post!

Taken in Arizona during a monsoon which turned the sky an erie color and produced a fantastic rainbow. It wasn't until I downloaded to the computer that I noticed the double rainbow in the shot...bonus![eimg url='' title='Double-Vision1.jpg']

My submission to the panning challenge. Taken in Arizona during a monsoon which gave the sky an erie glow and a rainbow that I could not resist! After viewing the photo I noticed that there were not one, but 2 spectacular rainbows!

I haven't posted anything here, this is a first . Seems that this may be a lot different than others and I do not have Photoshop to combine photos, but did it with
What makes this and other images unique was the combined sequences of shots blended perfect with the front tires to the next shots rear. It took some work to get the bike parts combined, but really gives an impact of going around this corner.[eimg link='' title='Bike ride' url='']

Aside from the interesting livery of this bike, you'll notice the absence of the wheels. I find it gives the image a lot of movement.

This is one technique that I've struggled with and need to spend more time on. I'll have to see what I can come up with this weekend.

Here's a couple of previous attempts:
