Freestyle: Weekly Photography Challenge

Freestyle: Weekly Photography Challenge

Each week here on dPS we name a theme for readers to go out and take photos on and then share with the rest of the community. This week the theme is completely up to you.

Instead of us imposing a theme on you – we challenge you to head out with your camera and just shoot for the joy of it. Photograph the people and subjects you encounter and enjoy the freedom of being able to shoot anything you like.

Once you’ve taken your freestyle Images – choose your best 1-2, upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to them or – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSFREESTYLE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Addiction challenge where there were some great shots submitted.

Have a fun week with your camera!

As new to this site I'd like to share a couple of concert photos. They are not new, and was taken with a camera I once had: Nikon D3000.

I like my pictures to have a function, and one of these two followed an article I wrote about the concert. Hopefully I will one day become a far better photographer, being able to take better quality pictures overall.

I took this pic at River Rock Park in Rawley Springs Va. I used a low shutter speed and used a color filter in my camera for the B&W and Green. I thought it was a cool effect.

One of my favourite picture. This particular picture portray the hard life suffered by immigrants from China all the way to South Asia, and the essentials which gave them countless of nutrient albeit the fact that they barely make any cents and how all those tiny beans will make a significant change in their life, not only make them stronger not only on body but on soul as well.

  • Marilyn Armstrong September 5, 2011 01:21 am

Looking through the wonderful variety of images ... from the simplest shots of everyday sights and objects to rare wildlife in the jungle (that tiger is amazing) to compelling black and white imagery that brings back memories of working in film ... The world's palette is endless, vision infinite. As a photographer, you can participate no matter who you are. Amazing photo opportunities do not come only to the well-equipped and well-trained. Fine equipment and high end software doesn't guarantee anything. Even the most inexperienced shooter and her iPhone may capture a moment that every photographer would envy. The silliness of those who point out that there are too many snapshots? Well, one man's snapshot is another man's image of a lifetime. You may not share that vision, but the amount of time you spend in the lab or the amount of money you spent on equipment will not guarantee your eye will see the great shot in a humdrum scene. Snobs beware! The muse spreads grants wishes to as she chooses ... YOU may not be amongst her chosen.

1st attempt at handheld night time cityscape. This is a shot of the Toronto cityscape shot from a moving yacht in the Toronto harbour. I had forgotten to remove the uv filter from the lens which resulted in the funky reflections in the sky.

This is Lafarge Lake, a five-hectare man-made lake, located in Town Centre Park in central Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. I've lived in Coquitlam for four years and only discovered this place a little while ago. The area was originally a quarry, but in the 1970s the land was transferred to the city of Coquitlam and they turned it into a lake that is stocked with trout for public fishing.

  • Marilyn Armstrong September 4, 2011 07:56 am

The first sign of the seasons changing here in the Blackstone Valley is the falling of oak leaves. We really do live in an oak forest, so every year we are buried in oak leaves, not to mention bombarded with acorns, sometimes large enough to put dents in our cars.

As are all my uploaded photos, this has reduced resolution so keep the file size smaller. Even at 150, this is not such a tiny file ... at full resolution, it is huge. I do have high resolution versions of everything, but I do NOT upload them. This also limits the usability of my images for printing. If you want a printable copy of anything, ask me nicely and I'll send you one. Otherwise, these are for looking at, not for printing.

  • Marilyn Armstrong September 4, 2011 06:52 am

THIS one finally shows the metadata. I have given up on your new upload tool because it does not work for me. It may be incompatible with Win 7. Or just with my computer. Whatever. Doesn't work, no matter how I try. Frustrating!!!

  • Marilyn Armstrong September 4, 2011 06:18 am

This is the image. For reasons I cannot comprehend, most of my posts do NOT post if there is an image in them and if there is, the image gets stripped out. I don't understand. I follow the directions, but I disappear as if I didn't exist. If anyone can enlighten me as to why this keeps happening, I would greatly appreciate it. I am making YET another try at sending a link to this image.

This time NOT using your special software which does NOT seem to work for me. Is it a Windows 7 issue?

  • Marilyn Armstrong September 4, 2011 06:11 am

I remember and it really DOES seem only yesterday ... building the teepee. Making the poles, carefully stripping the bark from the saplings that comprise her frame. But time has its way with everything, maybe especially something like this which is, after all, comprised of nothing more than sticks and canvas. But she has stood her ground for 5 years through all seasons and until will finally pull her down, will quite probably continue to stand. Creatures from the woods have taken up residence within her, which is perhaps as it ought to be since her humans have deserted her.
