10 Meter Challenge: Weekly Photo Challenge

0Comments

10-meter-photography-challenge.jpgThis week we’re going to go back to the theme of the first ever photo challenge here on dPS. It stemmed out of a quote from @chasejarvis on Twitter who said:

“There are at least 10 great pictures within 10 meters of you right now.”

I thought that sounded like a good challenge and issued it to dPS readers. The response led us to issue a weekly photo challenge.

It’s been over a year and a half since we did that first challenge so lets go for it again.

Your challenge is to take up to 10 images within a 10 meter radius of where you’re currently reading this challenge. Of course we can’t police whether you go further than 10 meters – but the exercise is to grow in your photography right where you stand/sit/lay right now.

You don’t need to go to an exotic destination to take a great shot – it could be right in front of you right now!

For those of you not into metric – 10 meters = 32.808399 feet – so you’ve got a bit of distance to play with considering you can go 10 meters in any direction from where you are now.

Once you’ve taken your shots upload the best of them to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to them below or embed them in the comments using the our tool to do so. Please note it sometimes takes us a while to approve comments with images as there’s a moderation queue – particularly over the weekend.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag it as #DPS10METERS to help others find it. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

PS: don’t forget to check out some of the great photos shared last week in the ‘Spooky’ challenge.

  • I just wrote an article on something similar. I am using Geocaching in place of “ten meters” to find my photos and then working with whatever i find. Essentially Geocaching is a world wide treasure hunt (currently 1.2 million caches) taking place all around you that you are probably unaware of. All you need is an iPhone or Android, the Geocaching app and your hiking shoes. It is so much fun. Throw in a camera and you have a perfect photo project. Here is the link to the article if you are interested. http://tinyurl.com/2byvy9s

Hi Jennifer, this is very sweet one!

May I remind that using Tags makes your pictures searchable! For example: if you would have tagged this one #DPS10METERS on flickr, than anybody on flickr could just click on tag and see ALL pictures on flickr tagged for the challenge.
    10x.

I took 10 photos from within 10m of the living room chair in which I read about the challenge. Our apartment is a mess, but it's also small enough that I could get to wildly different parts of it within 30 feet.

So here's a flickr set from a first time commenter:

I took ten fresh photos from within 30m feet of my computer desk, but felt a bit awkward about uploading ten whole photos to DPS... also, looking at some of the others they aren't that great, but hey, I enjoyed the challenge :D

When I read this post, I was in the doctor's office, and right now meant there, not my home. So that's what I posted.

  • Artak November 8, 2010 01:22 am

Well, that is great that many people take great photographs, but, common - many of you, with all respect should I say, lost a touch to the subject:

β€œThere are at least 10 great pictures within 10 meters of you right now.”

    One more time: RIght NOW!

Plus there is clear explanation - tag your photos on Flickr, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag it as #DPS10METERS

Don't you get it? IF YOU TAG IT, THEN IT IS SEARCHABLE!!!!!

    #10 Meters Weekly Photo Challenge

I don't know if I got this up the first time or not, I am not seeing anything and hope that I am not doing a double post. I saw this challange this morning and knew that if things just might hold together long enough I could possibly find a shot that might be worth the wait. But just in case the Sun God didn't want to co-operate, I did a bunch of flowers in the garden just outside the door to my hovel... Living in the tropical South Pacific and on an island makes early mornings and evenings really something that never cease to amaze me.

For those of you who might have an EXIF reader, the data is there for the taking....

Thanks Darren and I will be posting some of the flowers in another post for something else later on...

Today, I while waiting for the doctor in an exam room, I noticed the sunlight coming through the blinds into the room. The lines and angles created were mesmerizing. I grabbed my point and shoot from my purse and here are 3 shots I liked:

When the weather starts turning (and it starts early here in NE Ohio!), I start hunting around the house for fun things to photograph. So for the past couple of weeks, nearly everything I've shot has been within less than 15 feet of where I'm sitting right now, some within 10 inches. =) Here are a few:

  • DJWick November 6, 2010 03:42 pm

    Hello,

This is my very first post/submission to the DPS website, although I have been enjoying browsing and getting the lay of the land for a little while now.

    http://s1140.photobucket.com/albums/n561/DJWickDave/DPS10MeterChallenge/?action=view&current=MorningLeaves.jpg

This photo that is my submission to the 10 Meter Challenge came about by pure accident. It is a view outside my home office window. I just happened to turn around in my chair and glance out the window to see this beautiful early morning fall leaves, misty morning scene. The mist in the background is coming off of the lake in our back yard. I've been eying the "sun rising through the mist" for possibilities ever since we moved here, and have even attempted some setup shots. Wouldn't you know that the unplanned, impromptu shot turned out to be my favorite?

All I had to shoot it with was my daughter's little Nikon Coolpix point and shoot. I quickly grabbed a tripod, rushed out and snapped three bracketed shots (for later HDRing). By the time I walked back into my office and looked out the window again, the fantastic light effect was gone. Couldn't have been 5 minutes.

The reason I had to use the little Coolpix was because my first new camera in a decade, and my first DSLR ever, a Canon T1i (500D), was on order and hadn't arrived yet.

I've got a couple other shots that I've since taken with my new camera that I'm working up the courage to post. I'm very new at this, and am awed by the quality of photos I've seen here.

    Dave
