Thomas Mangelsen. He is an amazing wildlife/scenery photographer and advocate. Founder of the Cougar Fund and participant in multiple charities. He has also done what many of us dream of doing: making his passion profitable. http://www.mangelsen.com/

My photography crushes are:
Jasmine Star: http://www.jasminestarblog.com/
She’s fun and fresh and clearly has a way of making her subjects feel very at ease. I look at her photos and feel like she is takng pictures of her best friends. I also love how she infuses fun stories and personal tidbits into her blog posts.
Jessica Claire: http://www.jessicaclaire.net/
Her photos are so colorful and fun and a bit quirky. Her personality definately comes through her photos, but not to the point that it distracts from the subject.
Becker: http://blog.thebecker.com/
His photos are great. Quality stuff. I love his detail shots the best, or when he focuses on one detail in his portraits…like eyelashes or the bouquet. But i think my crush is more on him than his photography prowess. ;)

Chase Jarvis
http://www.chasejarvis.com
I admire Chase because he’s following his dreams not only by taking pictures but by enhancing the world of photography. Through his recent work, he’s developed books, podcasts, blog posts, collaborations and even iPhone apps which help any photographer embrace today’s technology. His work has inspired me personally to become a better photographer, and he has no idea.

Jasmin Star: besides that she is gorgeous herself she makes absolutely stunning wedding pictures, I like her style, her eye for detail that only a women can have and the fact that she doesn’t overdo editing in PS.
Sam Javanrouh: everyday one new image of a simple object or scene but viewed differently. I admire how he takes pictures of ’simple’ things and make them special. And that is bein a good photographer !
Pieter Van Impe: because he is Belgian and is pretty good at what he does: wedding photography. Deserves to be mentioned here for all the (free) effort/advice (egg: LIME he and Bert Stephani give to wanna-bee photographers (like me).

This is the most talented “pentaxian” out there:
- Keitha McCall
- http://www.flickr.com/photos/aravis121/
- Why? She has an amazing 365 project, going into the 3rd season. Her portraits (not only the self-portraits) capture emotion like very few people are able to.
October 9th, 2009 at 12:09 am
I actually have 3-
1) Jasmine Star (http://www.jasminestarblog.com/)
She not only creates phenomenal lifestyle photography at weddings, but she has a great personality! It’s a great skill to make people feel so comfortable that you can get the best out of them, and everyone should look their best on their wedding day!
2) Richard Avedon (just google him if you don’t know him, he’s very famous)
In my opinion, the best portrait artist of all time. He was able to capture the soul of his subjects!
3) DeWitt Jones (http://www.dewittjones.com/)
Amazing National Geographic photog (isn’t that the Holy Grail of journalistic and travel photography?)- he also does lectures and totally won me over with his film, “Celebrate What’s Right with the World.”

Their photos are full of art and emotion. They have a great eye for capturing vivid and spectacular images of friends and family. They make great use of focus, color, perspective, and depth of field. Everything seems to come together in their shots. I’m a huge fan.

Ondrej Prosicky ( http://naturephoto.cz/ ).
He’s a Czech nature photographer, specializing in bird photography.
I like his work, but I also like how he cares about nature. For him, it’s not just something to take picture of. After all, he is not a professional photographer. It’ just his hobby.
Ondrej also teaches workshops, gives presentations and otherwise gives back to the community.

She has only been shooting weddings for a few short years and her work is stunning, sharp, beautiful. Every post blows me away!

I totally admire Sarah Rhoads Photographers (www.sarahrhoads.com) for many reasons. The main reason being she moved to Seattle and kick-started her business with her hubby and has dominated ever since. I wish I had the guts to just take the head-over-heels dive like she did because it paid off! Secondly, she’s just a rockin photog…I love her aesthetic and flair for people and their stories.

I have a secret crush on Notley (flickr stream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/10thavenue). Take a look at his Fairs and Gas Stations sets. Gas Stations — really. I love that he takes spectacular photos where he lives, in the midwest of America — not famous for it’s spectacular photo opportunities. He takes photos that blow me away without having to travel the world or live in some famously photographic area to do it. He inspires me to look at my own world in new ways.

He is an awesome photographer of the old school, still using infrared film to capture beautifully haunting images. I have had the pleasure of meeting him at a talk about ghosts and haunted houses. I would love to get the chance to go photograph with him.

Kris Krug: http://staticphotography.com/ and http://www.kriskrug.com/ – His style of photography is awesome. I’m always looking at his photos of not only people, but of concerts and more! I think he was the main reason why I bought my dSLR. His stuff always has me inspired!

His style is always so different. I know him personally and his personality really fits his photography. His passion for pictures is astounding. When he takes photos he only takes pictures of the things he wants not just snap shots. He hunts for the perfect picture.
He is local but would like to expand his horizons and get his business out and about.

My photography crush is Charlotte Geary. She and her husband, Mike, are in Colorado and take some of the most fabulous photos I’ve seen. Her shots are clear and true and, while she may touch them up in Photoshop to make them crisper, they are not overprocessed with textures and tones. Her twilight wedding reception pictures of the newlyweds are always amazing.
Her website is here: http://charlottegeary.com/

P.S. My secret crush isn’t that secret. We are very much in love….

I am in love with her work. It is just so natural and shows the joys of every day life and family connections!!
There are others, but she is my absolute favorite! I’ve read countless articles and interviews with her and I would still love to pick her brain more! I would just DIE to spend the day with her and shadow her on shoots!!

Julian Wainwright!!

He won Sony and World Press with his photos of the Olympic divers, but his shots of the floods in Hoi An more recently, and his coverage of anything, everything – inspirational!
October 9th, 2009 at 2:08 am
My latest crush in on Gertrude Käsebier , mostly for her stunning portrait photography. Mostly I wonder how she managed to capture just the perfect expressions on her models faces that she did. All this mostly around the turn of the 20th century, without the benefit of modern equipment where she could have had the benefit of a lot of do overs.
But, alas, I’ll never meet her; she died in 1934, nearly 14 years before I was born.
October 9th, 2009 at 2:08 am
Her name is Megan McIsaac she’s out of Portland, OR. This young lady takes some very cinematic type portraits and concert photos. From what I gather all of her photos are using available lighting which what really drew me in. She shoots both film and digi but I from I think she prefers film.

I made a shout out list to the photographers who inspire me (posted on my Facebook page.
Now there are a few I have a serious #togcrush on: Dan Winters, Dave Hill, Nigel Barker, and August Bradley.
As far as whose job I covet, that would be Pete Souza’s. I love that he captures photographs with a political theme, and still makes them creatively.
My all time top 2 fav photographers are Andrzej Dragan and Chester Higgins Jr.
October 9th, 2009 at 2:10 am
Without a doubt, Tim Flach, http://www.timflach.com. He’s the consummate studio animal photographer. He captures such dramatic expressions and elegant moments with the animals, you can’t help but be enthralled.

I adore Jasmine Star! I just told my friend yesterday that I have a girl crush on her! (http://www.jasmine-star.com/) Jasmine is a teacher at heart and an amazing photographer. She tells her subjects love story in a way that lets you feel as if you know them. She opens her heart and life within her blog and if you’ve never looked at her work you are missing out on someone special. Thank you Jasmine!

I love the artistic photography of Matt Nicolosi
His artistic style is just amazing with usage of textures and colors.
I also really love the vintage style of the photos that Nick Campbell has, though he’s more of a motion designer than a photographer. He also has a great tutorial on Photoshop for Photographers which I really recommend :)

Jay Eads
jayeadsphotography.com/
His work is so clean, natural, and honest. I tend to like really vintage, textured, faded photographs- which is the opposite of Jay’s work, but his photographs are slowly changing my preferences towards those textured things. You really have to respect a photographer who can do great work in camera, and not fuss much afterwards. I really admire what he does, and hope that I can make images as honest as his someday.

Without a doubt I am a fan of Quintin Mills work. By far one of South Africa’s best Wedding Photographers. His ability to make every other photo look like a work of art is something that has to be admired. His works can be found at

I have a huge crush on Peter Watson.
At first because he makes beautiful landscape photos, but as a very close second reason is the fact that he has made it understandable for me how he works.
I started out with his book “A Field Guide to Landscape Photography” in which he explains it all in a nutshell.
After using his advise & explanation I checked out his website and imediately ordered “capturing the light & reading the landscape”, and my photos have improved so much.
check him out on:

John Keatley – http://www.keatleyphoto.com/ – from Seattle is amazing. His lighting is possibly my favorite of any photographer’s right now for portraits.
Then there’s Dustin Diaz from San Francisco – http://photography.dustindiaz.com/folio/ – his outdoor and night portraits are fantastic … actually all of his shots are!
And I’ll always have a crush on Mark Seliger – http://www.markseliger.com/ – the first portrait photographer whose photos really made me want to know who the photographer was and how he lit them.

Gunnar does magical things with landacapes, and Rebekka, besides being a talented knitter, manages to create absolutely stunning portraits (self and other).

I am not sure if I would call it a crush, but if I had to choose one photographer I like it would be Peter Read Miller, http://www.peterreadmiller.com, I have been facinated by sports photography for what seems like my entire life. I am working towards exploring it myself, finally, and I have enjoyed Peter’s photos. I only recently became aware of him but went back and looked at some old sports magazines and seen his name here and there. It would be an incredible experience to spend a day at an NFL game with him, watching and learning. There are a few others that I would like to meet but Peter would be at the top of the list.

I admired and respect Ken Rockwell. I’m not comfortable saying that I love him, ok? So he’s not out there shooting the drama shots that everyone else has indicated as hot or inspiring but his technical ability is fantastic, his images have an honesty and crispness that inspire me and his candor about what other people think is what keeps me reading him daily at http://www.kenrockwell.com. Ken’s “no bull” attitude has allowed him to break away from the pack of sheep photographers and do his own thing full time without compromising his principles or selling out the the establishment ideals. (I’d better get down off the soap box now.)
Oh, by the way, who is Jasmine Star? Just kidding…

This man is truly an amazing artist. His style is what I wish to accomplish with every photo i take. He is completely self-taught, which is so inspiring to me and makes me think that i can actually do this.
I would LOVE the opportunity to spend a day with him! Or even shake his hand! I would be ecstatic.

Andrzej Dragan
http://www.andrzejdragan.com
Dark, ominous, and dramatic, Andrzej’s photos to me capture a mood that is both morbid and fantasy. He is one of my favorite representations of what a digital photographer wants, and can do with the right tools at his disposal. Favorite photographer for lighting as he just seems to command it in every photo. Would love to see tutorials or other similar projects featured on DPS.

I have two photography crushes…the first is Skye Johansen. She is a childrens photographer in Utah. I love her work because she comes up with such cute poses and I love her use of patterns, textures, lighting and colors.
http://www.skyejohansen.com
The second is Kristopher Orr. I admire him because he does a lot of SOOC (straight off of camera) and film work. I love that in this age of post processing he is still trying to do it completely right the first time (and he does a lot of fun stuff too).

Jon Wozencroft. He runs the contemporary music label Touch. Additionally, his photography can be seen on each and every release. His work is a response and a challenge to the banalities of image reproduction as it is commonly used to sell music in corporate practice. He describes his landscape work as “atmosphere recordings, and they are forensic.”

I have photography crush on Diyosa Carter. I first saw her pictures in an old DPS article “How to Photograph Children” and have been following her photostream for a while. She makes her everyday random pictures of her kids look like Gap ads. She’s in love bokeh and bathroom/reflection shots. Every picture has a story and looks so ‘candid’ without looking candid…if you know what I mean.

I love the life and style of photographer Kevin Clark http://www.kevinclarkphotography.com/
his head shoot and food photography always make me raise the bar, and his blog is great as well.
I have other photographers that I follow and there are so many of us doing well, but Kevin’s work really shines.

There are two people who have encouraged me a photographer and who have inspired me as well. Rachel Titiriga is someone I have know for a long time and she has bought me pro flickr accounts, and has always encouraged me to pursue the hobby of photographer and is constanly giving me helpful tips and commenting on my photos.

Max Wanger, hands down. As soon as I saw his work I knew that was the direction I wanted to go with my photography.
To me he captures images the way the brain remembers them… in little precious pieces. And the light that every one of his images has is a very true light.
October 9th, 2009 at 4:49 am
I have two photography crushes – for entirely different reasons. Both are professional photographers, but you’ve probably heard of neither. They both shoot local market – and they’re both great at different things.
One is Tineke Ziemer of >a href=”http://northernpersona.com/”>Northern Persona Photography. You may have seen her in one of my “Share your Shots” posts. Her website is here – My wife and I are on it!
Tineke inspires me with her natural, laid back approach. She doesn’t excel at formal shots, but she does amazing with posing you to look natural. She has a talent of making you feel comfortable in front of her lens. And her pictures! Wow. I’ve never loved looking at myself so much! I usually dislike pictures of me – I’d rather be behind the lens than in front of it. With her, I’ll pose anytime, because I know it’ll look amazing.
Morgan Turner (Flickr here as Collective_Light) shoots differently. I’d love to have his eye for composition and his knack for making mundane things look great. He is also an aspiring strobist, and he has the gear geek streak that I do. He’s interested in the art and the science of great photography. He also does great action and extreme sports shots.
Those are my photographer crushes. Thanks for letting me share them with you.

Ethiopian photography Michael Tsegaye:

his work is so simplistic, but its so full of emotion and quiet power. I dream of producing images like his and knowing how to execute such simple vision into images that are so full of character.
photography is still a dream that I’m trying to gather the courage to pursue. his work keeps my eyes on the goal post. To be under his tutorship, especially in Ethiopia, would be a gift straight from the hands of God.

I’m surprised my favorite photographer has not been mentioned yet: Jose Villa. He is a fine arts wedding photographer, a master. This man does not make photographs, he makes art. He is amazing! His blog is here.
I saw that Jessica Clair was mentioned on here. She recently got married and hired Jose Villa to do her wedding photography.

A contact of mine on Flickr – I think he’s still a teenager, but his b&w portraits depicting teenage hoodies and the grittiness of life around where he lives blow me away…http://www.flickr.com/photos/clemphotography/
Two others because I love their quirky crops and takes on colour. Both are almost graphic designy in their approach:
Tanya Fitzpatrick – http://www.flickr.com/photos/red_dotdesign/

HONESTLY, when I first read the title of the article, i thougt of WHAT person i love photographing the most, not which photographer i love the most. but i think my ideea would deserve a try too, what do you all say? :)
October 9th, 2009 at 6:11 am
The photographers that I admire the most are actually from the same town that I live in, Jackson, MN. What makes it even better is that they are more than tollerant of me asking for advice. They do the worlds best photographs, have a fresh style and honestly, if you have the need for portrait/wedding or anything else photography you will not find better. They are Lit Photography, have a blogsite http://litphotography.blogspot.com/ and also a main site http://www.lit-pics.com and deserve great success in thier work. Honestly, check out the incredibly fresh style!!!!!

Jasmine Star
http://www.jasminestarblog.com/
Jasmine is a wedding photographer whose images capture THE moment every time. She has that IT factor. The eye to see and capture what no one else sees. I love portraiture and I pride myself in having the ability to have similar success when I shoot (just not as often as Jasmine) BUT the quality of her finish product is incredible. I don’t know how she gets such perfect color, lighting, and sharpness in her images. She sets the bar high and that just makes you wanna reach for it.

Joe McNally is the God of Photography Lighting!
As seminar speaker, Joe has to be the most entertaining with his brilliant sense of humor and his ability to convey a lot of knowledge in a short amount of time.
As a workshop teacher, Joe is very “giving” – he doesn’t hold back on giving you the secrets of his methodology.
As a blogger – he is funny as H_LL!

WOW what a list. I can’t believe that Phil’s very first entry :
“Thomas Mangelsen. He is an amazing wildlife/scenery photographer and advocate. Founder of the Cougar Fund and participant in multiple charities. He has also done what many of us dream of doing: making his passion profitable. http://www.mangelsen.com/”
wasn’t duplicated, but I live in Steamboat Springs, CO where Tom has a gallery, and I sometimes just walk in there for awe. He is TRULY inspiring, I’m glad someone else appreciates him….
Another Steamboat inspiration: http://www.coreykopischke.com. His use of lighting is amazing.
HOWEVER I’m truly appalled that no one mentioned any of the photography greats in here- perhaps that wasn’t the point however… No one has ever, or probably ever will, inspire me like Ansel Adams does. I took a workshop of his at the Ghost Ranch in Abiqui NM and haven’t been the same since. It’s more than a crush
for sure. :) http://www.anseladams.com
October 9th, 2009 at 7:50 am
The photographer I have always idolized the most would be Ansel Adams. There has never been a photographer in history who had a greater impact than he did in many ways. I am so sorry he is no longer with us! He was such a pioneer! I wonder if he would have followed us all down the path of digital photography. Even though he is no longer with us, his influence is still very much present and people still talk about him a lot. There will never be another who did what he did for our profession!

Jasmine Star all the way. There are lots of others, but Jasmine epitomises how wedding photography should be. Completely personal, totally connected to your clients, and the confidence and humility to capture amazing shots. She’s honest, open, sharing and caring about helping others get into the business. I have learned so much from her, and can’t wait to attend her workshop in January in New Zealand
October 9th, 2009 at 8:18 am
No question, for me it’s Stephen Oachs. His photos have an extra “spark” or special something that makes them stand out in a special way; they have a little more punch, an exceptional light, a bit of “Oachs magic” that shines, and it’s that shine that I wish I had. But even above that, what I really envy, is the way he has with animals…he catches them at moments that you don’t readily see. They have very real emotions on their faces, in their eyes, in their body postures. Amazing life can be felt from his captures! Yep, if any of that could rub off on me… -sighs- Stephen’s Gallery

Mark Sennet is perhaps the best celebrity photographer of our time. His work shows the celebrity not as glamourous or unattainable but as a real person. His photos range from Andy Warhol, to John Lennon, to the Queen of England. The man has literally photographed everyone! Must see his work to believe it.

Diane Arbus

Brilliant portraits. My instructor in photo and dark room in ‘74 was an huge fan and I knew why when I looked at her pro war teen and the Mexican midget . It seemed to me that she shot “real” rather than idealized images.

I love the beautiful stories that their photos tell. They group their photos together several at a time for one post and through their eyes you see all the details that make the world such an interesting place to live and that make photography such a beautiful art form to catch it all.

Sean Hagwell.
http;//www.seanhagwell.com
I’ve met him a few times and he’s one of those unique photographers that has such high aspirations, it oozes in every new image he puts out. I can see a hint of Annie Leibovitz influence in his work which is truly impressive seeing as she has one of the hardest ‘looks’ to replicate in my opinion. In the same vein as Chase Jarvis (another photographer I greatly admire), he keeps an active blog, videos, mobile shots, and uses a variety of other social media tools that let me keep up with his work on a daily basis. Sean Hagwell is definitely going places and I think it’s only a matter of time before he hits it big in the commercial photography industry.

Nadav Kander has some of the best dramatic portraits I’ve ever seen. His nudes are absolutely unforgettable. He is a master of color and black and white. Even his simple ideas for projects like ‘Signs We Exist’ are entirely fresh and have his unique perspective.

Jennifer Skog and Julie Harris.
http://www.jenniferskog.com/
http://www.julieharrisphotography.com/
They both have amazing style! i’m not a big fan of wedding photography (is that bad from a photographer’s standpoint, haha) but they make the weddings looks amazing!! both of them shoot boudoir, Jennifer’s use of blur and sharpness BLOW ME AWAY. Julie’s use of natural lighting and minimalist style really brings out the model’s natural beauty. These are the two styles I love most in photography (I hate PP and removing of every single blemish and flaw to the point where everything looks fake) and hope to blend into my own work. Both are very inspirational. I check both of their blogs every day in hopes of seeing something new. :)

Count me in on Chase Jarvis (www.chasejarvis.com) and Thomas Hawk (www.thomashawk.com). Thomas sparked a love of photography and Chase inspired me to start taking my own.

Richard Avedon & Ansel Adams… these men are absolute masters at their craft. Amazing works. Enough said…
Also, Jasmine Star (surprise surprise) and Lauren Clark (http://laurenclarkphotography.com/). Both are amazing wedding photographers, both keep very informative and beautiful blogs. Lauren Clark is probably significantly less of a ‘celeb’ among photographers, but her images are wonderful!
October 9th, 2009 at 11:47 am
I have two photogs that inspire me on many levels.
Chase Jarvis for his tireless giving back to the photography community. In starting out I ran into many a photog who guarded what they did as state secrets. I, like Chase, believe in giving back what I’ve learned and gained through my experience. In doing this it not only makes us better photogs but better people. His positive outlook on photography is infectious. In what others would see as a downturn in the business due to the poor economy and ‘uncle bobs’ Chase sees a wealth of opportunity. Off course I also love his work, amazing in your face work. http://chasejarvis.com
The photog is QT Luong, his amazingly stunning images of the National Parks is beyond belief. I have always aspired to do large format photography and Luong motivates me even more to do it someday. I love his ability to not only capture amazing vistas but in such deep reaching color. My own style involves eye popping color and Luong has set a bar I strive to reach. http://www.terragalleria.com/

Sucka pants although I have many photographer crushes he takes the cake I met him while living on the Mississippi river. Him a and a crew of rag-tag artists, performers and DIY-ers showed up in the town I lived in putting on parades and shadow puppet shows, teaching it was amazing and inspired me so much.
His photography inspires me so much because he shoots his daily life. Jumping trains across the country, punk rock shows nyc, and floting along in junk rafts through Italy, riding bike through Jakarta. Nothing gets me more excited about photography than adventure so I am really moved by his photos I really enjoy the realness of them.

Photography crushes, dare we admit them? Ive got a few
Cmon now, check em out:
My first crush is Heather Cole: http://www.heathercolephoto.com/blog/
She is sweet, sassy as they come and the woman knows how to work the camera. She frames and pulls some serious attitude straight through her lens. You would be doing yourself an injustice if you didnt check her out.
My next is a man crush, Paul Aresu: http://www.paularesu.com
When you mix sports, celebrity and an edge, you get some rockin photos that grab you by the collar and make you look at them.
Last and never, ever least I join in with those above and tell you Jasmine Star is putting her spell on me:

What cant she do to make a bride look beautiful and every groom the winner? I dont know what more I can say, just go look.

David Stephenson. http://www.davidstephenson.com
He is a former photographer for the Lexington Herald-Leader and is an amazing photographer and a great guy. His friendship and mentoring helped me get started in this business. He recently won the Pictures of the Year International award for best multimedia piece (see it here), literally an award saying that what he produced was the best multimedia piece in the WORLD and you know what he said? “I didn’t work hard enough this year.” He is an amazing guy, an incredible photojournalist, and a good friend.
October 9th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Photographic Crushes would have to be.
Chase Jarvis: His style and openness to sharing and using new tools makes me want to carry my camera around all the time or just buy an i-phone.
Jos and Jaysun of “The Photographers” in Portland Oregon. These guys made me want to go into wedding photography and every wedding i shoot i strive to make my pictures look as good as theirs.
Eugene Smith: His Pittsburg project made me pick my camera back up after being put aside for too long.
October 9th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Ondrea Barbe
I was enticed by her strong, sensual, and simply gorgeous black and white editorial photos of women for Men’s Health Magazine a few years back. Her work portrays the perfect “moments between (as she describes it)” that conveys an honest story, emotion, and personality of her subjects.
Chase Jarvis
In addition to making freakin’ cool images, his willingness to share knowledge and stay directly connected to the photographic community is admirable and I believe encourages many to push the envelope creatively.

Ansel Adams, because he is the master of Black and White.

Joe McNally, because of his flash photography work.

and

I’ve found a lot of others, but I consistently come back to these two. One shoots with a Canon and the other with a Nikon. What I love about their two sites more than anything is their generous amount of free information regarding “real life” shots. I shoot a lot of children, so the Pioneer Woman covers that well. Jasmine shoots weddings which is my passion.

Lindsey Yeo. You might know if her if you live in the Detroit area, but probably not otherwise. Although you should, her work is amazing, and her self portraits give you a secret intimate look into the life of an ordinary girl who is anything but ordinary. There are so many famous photographers, both living and dead, that I really admire. However, my “crush” is on a fellow that hails from the Adelaide Hills in South Australia. Each new genre of photography he attempts, he perfects.
His name is Tim Thorpe.
His website: http://www.hillsrain.com
Most definitely worth checking out.
I love how he has an excellent eye for perfect detail and composition and is not afraid to push the boundaries of photography rules… and I’m very privileged that he’s one of by best mates.

Bert Stephani from Belgium. I like so much his “50/50″ project! Don’t miss the joint project with Pieter Van Impe, Lime where you will find very interesting podcasts and workshops about photography.
Dave Hill from US. He gives us a story with many details in each of his photographs, and a video to explain the shooting.

I admire the work of Alfred Eisenstaedt. German-born, this master of candid street photography was a long time photographer with LIFE magazine. Probably his best known picture was taken in Times Square on VJ Day od the American sailor kissing a girl with the joyous crowds swirling madly around them. He mastered the art of the decisive moment, planning his shots and waiting until the anonymous people in his pictures occupied just the right space. Sometimes his shots were slightly out-of-focus, tilted or grainy, but with Eisie the image was the thing, and not the execution. He managed to show us those little moments that make us human. Henri Caartier-Bresson would be my number two photographer. More creative than Eisenstaedt, his images sometimes verged on the surrealistic. The work of both these gentlemen is amply illustrated on the Internet.
Simply enter their names and enjoy.

Greg Sims
His photographs are filled with amazing color and theatrics. Each one is a work of art all its own.
October 9th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
My “crush” would have to be:
Madeleine Calaido Weber. Stunning images of Co. Kerry, Ireland. She manages to capture the beauty, power and intrigue of this place as I’ve felt it.

Besides the really famous contenders, I love Nick Brandt’s work. His approach to African wildlife is absolutely stunning and unique.
For portraiture, I think Platon is at the top of the heap today.
Lastly, Christopher Griffith covers the whole gamut, and does it beautifully.
I wish my work was as powerful as what these visionaries are creating……
October 9th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Ryan Brenizer is a wonderful photographer from NYC. I adore his photojournalistic approach.
Stace Reeves’s engagement and bridal sessions are beautiful in each and every way.
Jose Villa has a great eye.
Jeff Newsom’s pictures are very artistic and just amazing.

most importantly tell us WHY you admire them as a photographer? She portraits people in a dimension thea seem to exist only in her mind, but a lovely dimension, and at the same time she cares about the subject of the photo and tries to portrait it honestly.

I have 2 photographer’s who I admire. Scott Kelby for techniques that I’ve learned from reading his books, and seeing his amazing work. But my ultimate favourite is Chase Jarvis for his amazing work, for making photography fun, for sharing, and for the commercial photography that he does so well which is a type of photography that I most admire.

Tchan Fou-li?Kan
David duChemin
Henri Cartier-Bresson
Tchan Fou-li?Kan is a Chinese photographer I just got acquainted with. He happened to have his photos exhibited in the Hong Kong Heritage Museum during my visit there. David duChemin’s a travel photographer known for his work for the charity group, WorldVision. And everybody knows Cartier-Bresson, a master of street photography.

I nominate Professor Harvey Mann, who has spent over 50 years as a photographer.
I met him on a P&O Artemis cruise around the mediterranean, where he was the digital photgraphy lecturer on board Artemis and gave talks about his photographic career.
He has had a wonderfully interesting life, photographing famous film stars, Queen Elizabther the Queen mother, (who he refered to as ‘the tiara’) and equally importantly ‘Gorillas in the Mist’ of Diane Fossy fame.
He gave me all sorts of photographic tips and ran I competition for best photo straight from the camera, taken during the cruise – I won ! – with a photograph of a flying carpet in Kukadasy – Turkey)

Chase Jarvis, http://www.chasejarvis.com, his work really stands out to me. And what he has done with the “The Best Camera” book and app are really cool. A lot of us forget that we have cameras on our phones, and they are a cheap and easy way to get better at photography
Joe Mcnally, http://www.joemcnally.com. HIs work with Nikon flashes is amazing. My favorite shots are the people in the water and the 2 men in the canoe in the lake.

Other than Joe McNally (which a few others have already mentioned), I’ve recently fallen for Neil van Niekerk.
Planet Neil
Not only are his images fantastic, but the wealth of information on proper use of flash photography, among other tips, is amazing. Just from reading his blog and tutorials, I can easily say the quality of my photographs that I was flash with has increased by double if not more. And he often answers comments in his blog for those looking for extra help.
October 10th, 2009 at 1:48 am
Joe McNally,
http://www.joemcnally.com.
What that man can do with flash guns is astonishing. Brilliant, clear, strong images, every one. I love his relaxed style, his blatant disregard for ratios in favour of gut feeling, and the fact that, thanks to him, I can now correctly expose my subject and underexpose the sun! Buy that man a pint!
October 10th, 2009 at 2:22 am
Jessica Claire!!! Her photography has such fun, sharp color. The detail she captures in her photography is amazing also!
Lydia Jane: I love how she captures the love between a couple with such perfection. She definitely knows when to find the golden light!!
{rosita} (on flickr): This lady is soo creative!! Her photos have uniqueness and wonderful texture and processing!
October 10th, 2009 at 2:22 am
I admire EZH – that’s all he provides.
I came across his work after doing a Picasa search on flowers. When I looked at his other albums, I became drawn into his pictures of family and location, and mostly his attainability (if that’s a word). His photos are very good, and personal. They are pictures that anyone may take, but they capture the human spirit which is something I strive for.

I just spent a good while reading most of the comments. Very popular post! Here are four of my favorite photographers:
Ansel Adams – He is the reason I started photographing landscapes.
Sally Mann – Again, i love her landscapes, but her over all body of work, from the controversial pictures of her children, to her even more controversial work on death – Fantastic. And she has the coolest camera I have ever seen.
Michael Forsberg – His work with with the Sandhills’ Cranes is so beautiful, and he is located here in NE. I also love to photograph the cranes, and spend a lot of time in the Platte River area when they arrive in the spring to feed, on the way north. If you haven’t seen that spectacle, it is a sight to behold.
Joel Sartore – He is also based out of Lincoln, NE, as a photographer for National Geographic. His work is on display on our natural history museum. Beautiful.
Any of these people can be googled. And thanks for all of the suggestions. I mad note of several names to check out.

Chase Jarvis
http://www.chasejarvis.com
I really like not only Chase’s work but also his constant encouragement for other photographers to keep learning, keep shooting, keep creating. He just put out a book called “The Best Camera” w/a supporting website http://www.thebestcamera.com including all photos (I think all) taken with his iPhone. VERY worth a visit to his sites to learn, network, and be encouraged!!!

Stuti Sakhalkar –
She is my inspiration, I simply love her work. She has amazing photography skills and she can create magic with her skills. I wish that someday she becomes world known photographer. Whenever I see her photograpy I simply get lost in them, so amazing, so beautiful, so perfect.

The images she makes are stunning and have a unique South American flair.
Her travel photography captures the region’s flavor and inspires me to visit these places.
Her portraits are amazing and truly capture the personality of her subjects.
I’ve been following her work for quite some time now, and can see that she is innovative and constantly trying new things. She inspires me to do the same.
I highly recommend you peruse her work!

David Preissel (aka: x-horizon)
His gallery (DeviantArt): http://x-horizon.deviantart.com/gallery/
His work – even his recent portraits – are so incredibly haunting. Not in a Macabre sort of way – just somewhat creepy. It’s a style I aspire to master, and Davis is probably one of the best at it. A lot of it has to do with his subject matter – he photographs a lot of creepy landscapes and trees. But his use of the light to create high-contrast photos is absolutely inspiring. His work is excellent.

Already mentioned by someone but I’m really finding http://missaniela.com/ inspiring
May be too processed for some people but this girl has a great imagination and attention to detail. Getting loads of magazine attention now too and she’s one of the judges in the Photographer of the Year contest in the UK.

Todd and Brad Reed are a father and son team who shoot landscape and wildlife in Northern Michigan area. They are eager to share their knowledge by doing “Picture Perfect Weekends” with small groups of students. I just recently attended one of these weekends and learned so much. Although they have different styles, they both make beautiful images. See their work at ToddandBradReed.com.

Frans Lanting — amazing photographer, conservationist and eco-warrior extraordinaire — no secret that I am utterly awed by his stuff! http://www.lanting.com/
Also Jerry Uelsmann, http://www.uelsmann.net/ — amazing artist with a marvelous sense of the surreal — his images haunt me and I love reading his written work about how he does what he does — he is one of the most sharing and teaching photographers I know of.

MIchelle’s passion, talent and enthusiasm is inspiring to me as an amatuer photographer. I came across her purely by accident, seeing as she is based in Austin, Texas and I am in Australia. Definately worth a look.

Well what can I say about Chase that isn’t known or hasn’t been said. I just think that the energy he puts back into photography for others is a boon to the rest of us. From his RAW videos to the impromptu social activities. I just can’t wait for him to come to Brisbane Australia and the hope of a social event.

Daren Rowse, he may not always produce the best pictures compared to famous photographers but it also takes skill to share his knowledge in a very simple way. It is like have a teacher pushing you to take photographs everyday. :)

Kelli France. I just love her portraits, and luckily she puts them on her blog several times a week. I don’t know how she manages to capture kids the way she does. My kids won’t even look near the camera.

Alejandro Perez- His photos are extremely raw and surreal, gloomy yet so vivid. He is an outstanding photographer. In his individual talent can capture the unique beauty of a being or an object that many others may not have the ability to capture. This young man has never taken a photography class, however he’s just as educated and skilled as the millions of artist pursuing this fine art.

Ok, I was visiting the Jenks Arts on Main event this past weekend (Saturday Oct 10, 2009), in Jenks Oklahoma, and met a wonderful photographer by the name of Richard A Waters. He and his wife have this website: rainbowreflectionsdaylilies.com. You can see his photos by clicking on the Richard’s Photos tab in the navigation bar on the left at their website. I have browsed thru other people’s photos enough to know, this his macro photos are what I would love to do myself. He “BEAUTIFULLY” captures natures best moments!! The first photo on display that caught my eye was the Moon Flower. Most of the photos were taken in his backyard, or not too far from his home. He also shared with me how he keeps his photography “simple”. Not alot of manipulation post production. He uses Photoshop Elements 5, and a Minolta …7D camera.(I could not quite remember the correct model).. and he does very basic editing like the contrasts, hues, and some softening techniques. The bubble bee with the pollen-laden legs heading toward the flower I believe is one of the most stunning. He also shared with me, that he had learned that the printing process was pretty critical in getting the outcome he wanted. He uses an Epson 6000 ink jet (again, not sure if that is the EXACT model) and prints his own photos using only Epson inks & Papers. He has been taking photos and doing his own printing I believe since 2004. I have been “swept off my feet” by his photos, and I bet you will be too!! I don’t know if you have ever done any articles on “printing of photos”, but Richard did give me some explanation on how, even the better printing places for photos, like a camera shop, will only do adjustments based on the first pictures or so… so that each picture is not treated individually before being printed. This would be make an interesting and informative topic for this website. Thanks for listening.. I could have wrote more..Richard’s work, to me, is very exciting!!

Someone I have a “Photography Crush” on is a local photographer who I have been ’stalking’ for the past year and 1/2 now. :P
A friend of mine works with her, and her business partner is an OLD friend of my moms. So I haven’t actually met her, but she knows who I am. (Thankfully, it’s not officially ’stalking’, otherwise she’d have blocked me ages ago. *laughs*)
I think she has some AMAZING work, and REALLY want to work with her sometime… hopefully soon. :P

Her work is not only so inspiring, she also is genuinely caring and passionate about the people and community that she works with. It also doesn’t hurt that she is very very attractive (hey, this is about crushes, right?)

Sergei Ezhov is my choice. I found him when I was searching for Flowers on the Google Picasa website. It was 10pm and one dim light was still on; after looking at a few flower pics, I decided to check out the rest of his photos in that album, and before long I was immersed in his pictures of family and landscapes… What I was taken with was his pictures of his family and friends, and the environments they were in.
After going through a couple of his albums I felt as if I was participating in the lives of his family and friends – and several of his landscapes I’ve downloaded as desktop wallpaper.
I guess the reason I like his work is that he’s a “natural” photographer. He captures the mood of what’s being portrayed in the shot that draws you in. I don’t think he spends a lot of time “in the darkroom” – or needs to. He has a great eye.
You can see his albums at http://picasaweb.google.com/Sergei.Ezhov, you shouldn’t need a google account.
