Where I Live: Weekly Photography Challenge
This week your photography challenge is to take and share an image that shows us something about where you live.
This theme came out of a number of people suggesting on our facebook page that we do something about our country of origin. I thought we could broaden it slightly to give people scope to do something about anything to do with where they live.
You might choose to do something to show us something about your country – but you might also choose to show us something about your house or something else that symbolises where you call home/live.
There’s lots of scope here for different types of photography – so be creative and get to work!
Once you’ve taken your ‘Where I Live’ photos – choose your best 1-2, upload them to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.
If you tag your photos on Flickr, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSWHEREILIVE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.
Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Beauty challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

Though not originally from Europe, I live in a really great small town in Germany. There is one structure that dominates the town, and it is a pleasure to look at every day and night. Because of the hills, many in town have a view of this kloster from their living room windows.

Living in the most beautiful spot in the heart of the Fingerlakes of NY, makes choosing which image to submit very difficult. That said, the lakes are why I moved here.

I live in northeast Oregon where our primary agricultural product is beef! Lots of cattle ranches in this area and it’s a wonderful, hardworking way of family life. These images were shot on “Branding Day”. Families and friends come together and help one another on their ranches to get the spring calves branded for the season. It’s a day filled with hard work, lots of laughter, food and commraderie.

I was born in Guam, lived in Hawaii for 5 years, but now am permanently embedded in Fife, WA. This former farming community is now home to several suburban developments, which is what I’ve shared. These were taken over the Thanksgiving 2010 weekend, when we last had snow, followed by frigid temps forcing the snow to stick around for a few days. Although it was minimal, this was quite a bit for Washington (in my area).

The past few days we have had an extreme amount of cold hit the town that i live in,
it was so bad that we have been left with 2-3 days without gas (i.e. heating, hot water, etc)
Our first night with no heat, we managed to find some firewood …after it was all stacked
I went outside to snap this picture… it was 18 degrees, but i was so grateful for the warmth
that this firewood was going to provide us.

This is my back yard after the wood had been stacked, i was grateful for the warmth it would provide my family… with a gas shortage, and 8 degree night ahead of us.

My little town, located on the southeast coast of North Carolina, USA, in a corner where a river meets the sea, is dominated by colorful aquatic sunsets and fishing boats. This particularly scene really speaks to our lifestyle that is so dependent upon nature – both economically and spiritually.

This is a photo I took the other day out back of my house. When the sun hits just right on the frosted plants, it creates a surreal scene. It’s almost fake looking like the scene is out of a movie or something. It is really beautiful though and wanted to share with everyone what I see on a daily basis when I get up in the morning. Hope you enjoy.

While trying to get a photo of the sun setting between the two towers of the Golden Gate Bridge, this person came out on a stand-up paddle board. You’re looking across the San Francisco Bay, and out further is the Pacific Ocean. At first I didn’t like the lens flare, but it really does seem to draw your eye to the paddle board man. It looks like he’s waving goodbye to the sun.

I live in the country and one of my favorite subjects is my neighbor’s barn. Here it is on one of the few sunny mornings we’ve seen this winter in Richfield, OH USA.
This is another shot in the yard behind my hours. I love where I live. Otherwise, why would I put up with these Northeastern Ohio winters.

Thought I’d throw some comedy into this. This isn’t my house specifically but it’s in a canyon about 15 min from my house. Sometimes it feels I work so hard and so much and even still, all I can afford is a tiny shack that is in shambles. What’s funny is the sign in the background says “strict quarantine, keep out”. If you saw my apartment at times, that sign would fit right in.

Central Florida, US — Lake Morton was gifted with a pair of Mute Swans many years ago by Queen Elizabeth. The decendents are rounded up yearly – given check ups and whatever else is needed by local Veterinarians.
Always fun to watch the humans in Parks & Rec get splashed!

One of the perks of living in Syracuse, NY is the fact that even though we get pounded with snow, we know how to handle it. 15″ of snow overnight? The roads are clear by 10am! Here are a few shots from around town this morning and yesterday.

Hopefully more success will come from my second try.

My Central Valley, California region keeps showing up on the least flattering lists: Dumbest City (based on educational level attained by majority of the people); Most Miserable, and so on. I live in a tiny suburb surrounded by agricultural fields, orchards, dairies and vineyards.

Spring has sprung here! Unfortunatley we only get to enjoy these blossoms for a short time due to the crazy wind we get every spring.

I live just outside the city limits of Ann Arbor, Michigan USA, a university, medical and high tech town. My house is located in a semi-rural area. In just minutes I can be downtown or on a dirt road in the country. Downtown has the typical town buildings, along with campus, dorms, entertainment, football and other sport stadiums. This is a picture of an older building downtown that I took this week on a morning that was a chilly 1°F. http://www.flickr.com/photos/karenschwallie/5434515709/
