What’s In Your Camera Bag? [Our Writers Tell All]
Today I was chatting with a couple of our regular DPS writers and decided to do a quick survey of the type of camera gear that they’re using. I thought it might make an interesting post to pull it all together. As you’ll see a few themes emerge.
I asked each writer four questions:
Which camera they use, what are their most used lenses, what their favorite accessories are and what their first digital camera was (I thought this one might be good for a giggle). Here’s what they each replied:
Natalie Norton
What Camera Do You Use?: Canon EOS 5d
Most Used Lenses: Canon 50mm 1.2 and Canon 200mm 2.8 IS L series
Favorite Accessories: 5 in 1 collapsible reflector/ and a collapsible diffuser
First Digital Camera: Nikon d70s (actually if we’re going WAY back, my first camera was some strange sony model)
Simon Pollock (Sime)
What Camera Do You Use?: Canon EOS 5DMk2 and a Canon EOS 30D
Most Used Lenses: Canon 50mm f1.4 and Canon 24-70mm
Favorite Accessories: Battery Grips / Alien Bee transmitters
First Digital Camera: Sony Mavica .9mp with 1.4″ floppy disk
Neil Creek
What Camera Do You Use?: Until recently I’ve been shooting with a Canon 350D for years, but for the last month I’ve been shooting with my new Canon EOS 5DMk2.
Most Used Lenses: My walkaround lens, on for 80-90% of my photos is the excellent Tamron 24-135mm. Great value for money and high quality. Second to that I most love shooting with my Sigma 8mm fisheye. It’s the most fun I have with my camera.
Favorite Accessories: Although they’re unreliable and a source of endless frustration, my ebay wireless flash remotes have revolutionised how I shoot. I’m looking forward to the new RadioPoppers for affordable reliability. Second to that, I really like my cable release. It lets me get the long exposure shots of the night sky that I love taking.
First Digital Camera: An ancient, but good for it’s time, 2Mp Canon A200. I still have it, but never use it.
Chas Elliot
What Camera Do You Use?: Main Camera Nikon D700 Backup Nikon D200
Most Used Lenses: Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, Nikon 50mm 1.4 and Nikon 18-200mm Variable Aperture
Favorite Accessories: SB600 flash units for off camera lighting an Manfrotto ball-head tripod
First Digital Camera: First DSLR Nikon D70 and First digital camera (Kodak something… very old.)
Peter Carey
What Camera Do You Use?: Canon EOS 5d & Canon Powershot SD630
Most Used Lenses: I use a 28-300mm Canon lens most all the time. Heavy SOB, but great fun.
Favorite Accessories: The power grip for the 5D. With the larger lens it really is well balanced with the power grip. Other than that, my other favorite accessory is organic chocolate.
First Digital Camera: My first digital camera was a G1, purchased right before my daughter was born in 2001. I think they are on G1000 by now.
Christina Dickson
What Camera Do You Use?: I use the Canon EOS 1D Mark II N
Most Used Lenses: Canon 24-70, L series, 2.8
Favorite Accessories: Case for all of my memory cards
First Digital Camera: Canon D40 [the o.l.d. version]

Interesting!
I say: “Less is more!”
Usually I have my DSLR camera with me all the time in a small bag.
- PENTAX K10D
- Backup battery
- 50mm 1.4 Pentax lens (1970s)
- Tripod replacement (a string that I attach to the tripod connector on my DSLR, then i step on the string and pull the camera up to stabilize)
When i travel *really* light, I use the Leica D-LUX 3.
For my next holiday (Cuba!) I’ll get me a portable harddisk with SD-Card slots. I hope that’ll prove useful :)
Kind regards
Oliver

@LisaNewton: No, Canon isn’t “better”, it’s just luck of the draw here…or maybe Canon users unconsciously congregate.

I love my Thinktankphoto ( http://www.thinktankphoto.com) belt and pouches.

Is there a typo in Natalie’s most used lenses? Is it a 200 2.8 or is it a 200 2.0 IS?
March 19th, 2009 at 3:20 am
Pentax doesn’t appear …
Untill now, Pentax k20d + sigma 10-20 + tamron 18-200 + pentax 50mm f1.7 , just everyday use, carry that bag everywhere. Otherwise I have to change the bag to something larger and add a Pentax K10d, Sigma 100-300 f4, sigma 500 super and … some other things

March 19th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
There’s some enviable hardware mentioned here. I’m about to buy my first DSLR and guess what – I’ve decided on a Canon 450D. I’d like to see what the amateurs are using as obviously most people in the article are pros and use top end/top price cameras. I’m trying out my sister’s 350D at the moment and just don’t think I can go back to my Panasonic Lumix. My first digital was a Kodak I got in 2004.
March 19th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
How about “What -is- your camera bag?” What kind of bag do you use on a daily basis?
March 19th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
Peter… I’m not “Brandist” but right now I’m using thinkTANK for everything… I have a thinkTANK Streetwalker HD as my “need to take two bodies and everything else” bag and a SpeedRacer Pro for the single body music gig shoots… If anyone is after a good deal (you get an extra free bag) on some thinkTANK stuff… you can use the link on my blog http://www.gtvone.com/wp/ as they have a choice of free stuff you can take when you buy a camera bag…. I used to use Lowepro and before that Crumpler, I still have my original Crumplers and Lowepros, but I find the quality and “pocketicity” of the thinkTANK range really suits my needs.
March 19th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
Camera: Nikon D70 wife has a D70 and similar lenses also
Lens: AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1:4-5.6 D Zoom and AF Nikkor 28-80mm 1:3.3-5.6 G Zoom

I still have and use Film cameras a Nikon FA, Nikon F Photomic and Nikon FG along with their lenses and flash units.
Lusting after a D80 or D200. Not quite jazzed about the D90 or D300/D700 which are out of my budget …for now!

When people ask me for recommendations for buying their first DSLR I usually say that Canon vs Nikon is like Toyota vs Honda. Each brand has their strengths and weaknesses but you can go wrong with either. If I had money to burn I’d have both!
March 20th, 2009 at 8:09 am
Oopps! my previous post was completely wrong, I posted what I have.

Gary, I use Canon because I like the menu system. Held a Nikon tonight, felt nice… I forgot to Mention, I’ve just started using an OLympus tough 8000 (had to have one after the review! Ace camera!!!) So, that’s not a Canon! ;-)
March 20th, 2009 at 10:21 am
I use a Canon EOS 40D. My most used lenses are Sigma 24-70 f2.8, Canon 70-200 2.8L U, and a Bigma. My first digital camera was a Canon EOS 400D and before I switched to digital I used a Minolta X700 film SLR..
March 20th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
So I’m not the only one who plunked down something like $900 for the VGA Sony Mavica. I think I actually still have it packed away in a box somewhere. FOR SALE: Vintage Sony Mavica. Antique floppy discs included. Asking price only $900 ;-)
March 20th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
This was interesting: I agree with the suggestions for similar articles re: software, post processing techniques etc. Oh, and thanks Sime – I hadn’t really considered a battery grip but you inspired me to do some research and now it’s my next must-have accessory.
March 20th, 2009 at 1:23 pm

March 20th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
I too didn’t realize there was so much ‘Canonism’ out there. I’ve never had anything against Nikon, I just never started using it. Canon also forces you to smile when you say it. Nikon is kinda a frown. :)
March 20th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Heh!
Like Peter Carey, I too have a secondary camera that’s an IXUS 60. Well, his is an IXUS 65 (PowerShot SD630), but they’re about the same.
First camera was some Kodak Easyshare 2.0 megapixel camera. There was a tiny v’finder and there was limited ‘live view’ (it’s not called live view on P&S, but I don’t know what it is)… the screen didn’t come on until you pressed a button.
Main camera is an EOS 450D.
I must say that my favourite accessory is my memory card.
March 21st, 2009 at 3:06 pm
I only use and carry my nikon D 40 , and a tripod. Just take care the memory card.

I shoot with a 5D mkII – upgrading to FF (finally) from 20D/40D.
I mostly use the 24-105L f4 now – since the high ISO quality of the 5D mkII makes this lens much more powerful even in low light (so far I used the 24-70L f2.8). I also love the 70-200L f2.8 IS for indoor sports and the 16-35L f2.8 with its new perspective on FF.
As an accessory I always have an external flash with me (580EXII) to mostly do daylight fill-in flash – not to forget polarizer for almost all landscape/outdoor shoots.
I do workflow with Lightroom (every single photo being shot in RAW) and add some twist with Photoshop (sometimes).
I started some odd 30 years ago with a Canon A1 & F1 and a lab in the basement ;-)
March 26th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
What Camera Do You Use?: Canon EOS 400D & Canon EOS 350D (backup)
Most Used Lenses: I use a 50mm f/2.8 Macro, 28-105mm USM
Favorite Accessories: The power grip for the 350D/400D. Once you’ve used that for portrait shots, you can’t go back to twisting your arms around.
First Digital Camera: My first digital camera was a Kodak DX3600. It was only a 2.x MP camera, but it took some awesome shots!
March 28th, 2009 at 1:52 am
Nikon does some things better, Canon does other things better. Most often it’s whatever you bought first that guides you. I don’t think you can go wrong with either.
Camera – Canon 50D with a 40D for backup (both with battery grips)
Lenses – 24-70 2.8 L and 70-200 2.8 L IS but for “everyday” shooting the 28-135 IS is hard to beat
Accessories – My new PocketWizard TTL’s and my 580 EX with a LumiQuest Softbox. That alone has really improved my portrait shots.
First digital camera was the original Sony Mavica with the floppy drive. At that point few people had seen a digital camera as it had not been officially released yet. When my son was born I walked into the waiting room and showed everyone a picture and they could not believe it. Up on a website within an hour. The pictures were crap compared to film but it was nice to have at the time.

** Canons & Nikons! I am an old Olympus OM1 35mm SLR user (not an automatic bone in its body). But when changing to digital SLR I selected the range of cameras I could afford, got the store to pull all the contender makes & models out and tried ‘em all. Incidentally just the way I chose the OM1 30+ yrs ago.
The Nikon felt like a brick made of lead, the Canon was lens heavy, etc, etc. Got to the Olympus last; balanced, light and compact but not too much so, felt oh so good in the hands, so Olympus is was, once again.
I teach how to buy and use digital cameras for a camera club (basic level) and always recommend doing as I did. What feels good in the hands and to use to you, not everyone else? The quality for the average amateur for most of the makes is pretty good anyway, but certainly is an issue for the pro & very advanced amateur though. But I challenge most of us average amateurs to see the difference within similar ranges of camera. OK I confess I am an Olympus nut, I just wish some folk would give other than Canon and Nikon and look/feel when they make thoir choices.
Sorry for the long post but hope someone gets something out of it.
March 30th, 2009 at 12:06 am
I was planning to buy canon 5D mark II but was not able to decide yet whether to go for it as this will be my first dslr. I have been using Nikon FM2 since long time with great results. This article have given me the confidence to go for it , as it is the choise of many photographers.
Thank you.
March 30th, 2009 at 10:03 am
For Minu,
All I can tell you is that I love my new Canon 5D Mark II. My photos have been sharp and noise level is low.
My point and shoot cameras are Nikon and my DSLRs are Canon: 20D, 40D and now the 5D. I have never been disappointed.
I know it is so hard to decide between the two makers. I don’t think you can go wrong with either one.

Nikon’s are just as good (or even better IMO) as Canon’s. Its just that Canon has better and cheaper beginner models than Nikon.
Because the camera gears are incompatible or maybe because you just are used to the camera brand, it usually means that you stick with whatever brand you are using. The case is usually the more serious you are about photography, the larger your investment is on the accessories(lenses, etc) compared to the actual camera.
First Digital Camera: none (I just borrow Nikon’s and Canon’s here and there) but if you count the film type non-digital SLR, I got a Canon relic(forgot the model).

I have a Canon 350D for now. I’m eyeing a 50D but I’m working on my lens collection.
Lenses: 18-55 kit lens, 17-85mm USM, and a 50mm f1.8.
Accessories: Speedlite 580 and 430
First digital camera, a Nikon point and shoot.

I have a Nikon D60. I’m a beginner so that will probably be my primary camera until I think I’m good enough to invest in a D90 or D300.
Lenses: I have a 18mm-55mm vr and 55mm-200mm vr. I use the 55mm-200mm the most because I like to get upclose and personal without being upclose and personal.
My favorite accessory would have to be my HP HDX laptop for photo editing. I’m still learning the editing process also. My first digital camera was a sony something. I didn’t have a clue at all… I just took pictures now I take photographs.

In my carry-most-places kit, I have the following: Olympus E-3 body. Zuiko Digital 14-54 f2.8 (28-108mm 35mm equivalent), 50mm f2.0 macro (100mm), and 50-200 f2.8 (100-400mm), Zuiko EC14 Teleconverter, Olympus FL-50 flash, flash extension cable, Hoya Pro1 Circular Polarizer and step up ring to work with all three lenses, and two extra batteries.
When I know specifically what I am going to shoot, or need to travel light, I can put the body and two lenses (or one lens and the flash) in a smaller sling-bag.
