I use a winecask shoulder bag that holds 2 wine bottles, but instead of winebottles is a DSLR with a 70-300mm lens.
For a small DSLR camera with a prime lens, I use a small generic schoolbag.

I have gone through so many bags trying to find the "right" one. Since I have Nikons I got the Nikon bag, didnt work. Got a Kata-DR 465. Got more lens and another camera body got a kata oc 84 because it had a carrier with wheels. Works great when traveling. Went back to my Kata dr-465. Needed easier access and got a Tamrac 608 Pro Systems 8.
Utiltimately go between Kata dr 465 and Tamrac.

I use the "Think Tank Airport International V2.0." Wow what a great, well made case in all aspects. It is a case which can be wheeled. It doesn't look like a photography case. I absolutely love it. I waited until my local photography shop ran a special and picked it up...I have not regretted it since. Right now my case configuration is maxed out holding a Nikon D700, a Nikon 17-35 2.8, Nikon 24-70 2.8, Nikon 70-200 2.8, Nikon 16 2.8 fisheye, Nikon 50mm 1.4, Nikon 2x teleconverter, 2-SB-800, SB-600 and and SB-900, SD-8A battery case, 4 pocket wizards, 2 Radiopoppers, RRS wedding bracket, 2-Gary Fong Diffusion domes, assorted cables wires, filters etc....the case is a brute and worth every pnny it cost....ARR

For Jimothy, In reply to your backpack question. I use the Tamrac Adventure series. I can put my camera and a couple of lenses in the bottom section and a light jacket and snacks in the upper section. If I am not hiking then I will use the upper part for more camera gear. I just bought the bigger one that also accommodates a lap top.
One thing I like about these is that they don't really look like a camera bag so seem a bit more discrete. I also have a small shoulder bag that I sometimes carry at the same time just to carry my camera body and one lens attached so I have quick access.

I use the Lowepro Slingshot 200AW. It's great for walking around and hiking. The side zipper is incredibly convenient; although you can only access nearby lenses through it. It's right right size if you have 2-3 lenses plus some accessories. If you have more than this I'd consider buying one or two sizes larger. -E

For photo shoots, I use my Shootsac and LOVE it! I also have a Jill.e medium size bag to hold my 5D Mark II when not shooting with it. They are kind of expensive bags but I love that they are not only great camera bags but also stylish!!

I still have my Nikon starter bag and love it. I tried 2 cam bags and ended up returning 'em to the store...either too bulky or the straps are so so stiff and bulky as well...I am actually looking for some type of a belt bag which will fit only the stuff I need during photoshooting. When I carry a camera backpack type -it's like I am pushed forward because of its heaviness and size.
However, I believe it depends on where you're going and what gadgets you need to put in.
