This Week in the Digital Photography School Forums
Another week, another weekend update from the Digital Photography School Forums.
Assignments
This week we finished the transportation assignment and let me say, what a response! We had so many modes of transportation shown that we couldn’t even list them all, but we had everything from feet to bikes, planes to trains, and everything in between. So it was a very difficult choice this week picking out the winners for the competition. Our winner was Sybren for his bicycle picture which not only was a great shot, but also took talent taking the shot while riding his bike. Our honourable mentions go to André di Lucca for his train in motion, and Susan for her clever take on the transport idea .
We also announced the newest assignment this week: Time. If you have a shot that depicts the passage of time, come post it in the assignment. If you want to be part of the mini-contest, the picture needs to have been taken between 26 July 2007 and 9 August 2007, and you need to include Assignment:Time in your post. Only one image will be accepted per member for the contest, so make sure you pick your best.
Next week’s assignment will be Red, so if you see something red, stop and shoot it.
Weekly Poll
This week we asked people over at the forums to choose between taking pictures at night or during the day. This poll had our most votes yet! So keep voting and telling us why you’ve made your choice. The winner this week was day time photography.
One of the nighthawks, Pernod, said “In the dark, eyes see only in black and white… but with enough patience the colours you can get are nothing short of breathtaking.”
Of course, daylight photography still won out. Jargon said “I prefer to see a lot of colors. And I enjoy looking at the blue sky with some clouds. I also like the options made available by having bright light, such the option to freeze the action or to have motion blur.”
This week, come and tell us why you like to take pictures or make pictures (read the thread for the difference).
Hot threads
Poll, sorta: How much have you spent?: Photography can be one expensive hobby, but have you ever felt like you were the only one who was spending a lot on gear? Come see how much other people have spent and add in your own confession.
My first wedding picture!: Bo_ shares his first wedding shot. An excellent example of creativity that you just have to see.
How do you carry your kit?: Do you love your camera bag? Are you looking for a new one? Are you just curious about how other people carry their cameras? Then this is the thread for you. Come share what you use to carry your kit.
Lens conundrum…: A reader asks a question about lenses for his Rebel XT and which one would be best for his purposes. Drop by the thread if you have a recommendation or a question of your own.
Other threads to note
We’re on to O if for… so drop by and share your pictures of items that start with the letter O. Whether it’s orchids, olives, oranges or something else altogether, drop by and share it. We’re also up to week 11 in What Would You Do. So if you’ve got a post-processing technique that you like to apply to your own pictures or you want to get some experience in fixing pictures, drop by this thread and show us what you would do to this week’s picture.
Finally, July’s contest to win a Cam-Pod has ended, so watch the blog for an announcement of the winners.

Question I can’t find an answer to: Why is it I will get an email from darren@xxxx.net about someone trying to access my account, and I can not get him or anyone to answer my emails? He wrote that the person trying to log into my account had the following IP address:74.53.243.34, but will not respond to either resetting my account, canceling the account, or whether this person has gotten into my account. What’s up with that? I also can not get into my account or use the forums. What gives?

Dave,
Darren here. Thanks for your email. We’ve had some problems in the last 48 or so hours with someone trying to hack into users accounts which has resulted in quite a few members getting that email. It’s an automated email and due to the numbers we haven’t been able to email everyone a response about it.
We’re working on it and are hoping to get the situation rectified shortly.
Thanks for your patience.

“a shot that depicts the passage of time” is a marvellous concept…it remembers me about Einstein and instantaneity – maybe the right shot could be a totally blank photo :)
