Take a Self Portrait [Weekend Photography Challenge]
Over the last couple of week’s we’ve run weekend photography challenges and had a lot of positive feedback from readers – so I thought it might be time for another one.
Whether you get it done or even discover this post on a weekend or later in the week isn’t really the issue – the idea is simply to give you something to go away and work on and to know that hundreds of others are doing the same thing.
This week’s challenge builds upon one of the hottest posts from this week – 7 Photography Projects to Jump-start Your Creativity – it’s to take a self portrait.
In that post Jennifer suggested the 365 Days challenge where by you shoot one portrait of yourself every day for a year. Of course this a massive commitment but I know many readers have participated in this challenge (and have gotten a lot out of doing it) but this weekend I want to take the ’self portrait’ idea and set that as your challenge or task for the weekend.
Once you’ve taken your self portrait – upload it to a photosharing site and share a link to it in comments below.

Great idea Darren. I recently a post on Twitter by a guy that said he’s more likely to follow people if they have a great photo of themselves – preferably smiling. Maybe that could be the goal of someone’s weekend challenge: end up with a great shot to use for your avatar, twitter icon, etc.

Here’s my take on a self portrait. Taken outside on my balcony with the curtain as a backdrop. Used EOS Utility on my laptop to take the picture. Edited in Photoshop Elements, just a bit of cleanup, and a bit of burn tool in the edge of the iris to give et more of a glow. Converted to B&W. Hi All,
The timing of this challenge was just right. Over the past few months I’ve been unmotivated with my photography. I was shooting alot of highschool baseball and kind of got into a rut. In the past couple weeks I have started to “get out” again. An airshow and carshow, went to my favorite lake for sunrise this morning. As the “ad” states “just do it”. With that said, I shot a self portrait of me and my wife Joanne this morning as we prepare for College football weekend and our Huskers. I enjoy this site and the contribution by all posters. This exercise for the DP School exemplifies why I fell in love with photography. After taking a bunch of “normal” portrait shots, I noticed some eyeglasses lying around and just played around with it. I probably took around 50 shots because I was having way too much fun.

I have been doing the 365 project for about 40 days now…its getting tough, but it has brought out a lot of emotion that I didn’t know I could get on film, at least not out of myself. I have always hated having my pic taken. This pic I took on Friday morning after my 6month year old work me up for “breakfast”

Seems a bit self-centered to me but I get the best photos of “me as I am” this way.
My Self
I’ve noticed people love to know what you look like so this is the easiest and fastest…I’ve tried to do the “glamourous” looking shots but the most natural ones look best to me.
