Photosmith – the iPad mobile companion for Adobe Lightroom (Win a Copy)
**UPDATE – THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED – THANKS TO ALL THAT ENTERED**
During the week we got the following press release from the makers Photosmith – a cool App for iPads. We also got permission to give a couple of copies of it away so once you see if it’s for you – check out how you can enter to get one below.
Press Release – Tuesday 26 April, 2011
Photosmith brings Lightroom synchronization to the iPad
Photosmith introduces sorting and tagging to photographers on the go.

Atlanta, GA. April 26, 2011 – C Squared Enterprises, Inc has released Photosmith for the iPad. Photosmith brings the ability to manage photos using collections, keywords, tagging, ratings, EXIF, and IPTC metadata. Photographers no longer need to wait until they get back to their main computer or drag a laptop to sort through photos or show clients their latest results. With Photosmith, photographers can load their photos directly on the iPad, filter, sort, rate, and keyword while in the field/studio. When they get back to Adobe Lightroom on their Mac or PC they can sync all photos from the iPad to Lightroom and all of their tagging and rating will also transfer with no need to duplicate effort.
Photosmith improves the photographer’s digital workflow, especially flows with RAW images. Photosmith offers viewing of full RAW image data from the latest dSLR cameras in full fidelity and up to 100% zoom; even on 25+ megapixel images. Photosmith offers a grid view for quickly sorting through thumbnails and collections, a loupe view for viewing individual images and tagging, and a full screen view to maximize use of the screen. Users can assign a rating, choose a color label, view the basic EXIF data (shutter speed, ISO, f/stop, and more), or edit the title, caption, or a number of other IPTC fields. All these settings are synchronized with Lightroom using the free Photosmith plugin. Future changes made in Lightroom are saved back to the iPad during a sync as well. See more at: http://bit.ly/PhotosmithTour
Photosmith assists photographers on the go with sharing their photos too. Photos can be sent to Flickr, Facebook, Dropbox, or email. Those sent to Flickr and Facebook maintain their titles and keywords, allowing pros to quickly share and get feedback from their clients, or allows the causal photographer to share photos while on vacation.
Photosmith is the culmination of 24 months of effort and development continues to add new features over time. Users are encouraged to submit feedback and suggestions to help drive the future of the app.
The app is available worldwide for US$17.99 (or the approximate equivalent).

What is Photosmith?
The best time to organize your photos is when you take them. Photosmith fills the gap in the photographer’s workflow by letting you organize, rate, tag and label your photos while on the road with your iPad. When you get back you can easily sync with Adobe Lightroom® on your PC or Mac.
The iPad a great device with a beautiful screen, but there’s only a limited number of apps that really fit within thedigital photographer’s workflow. If you take your pictures while on vacation, on a photo shoot, or anywhere away from your computer, you may end up with hundreds or thousands of pictures that need to be organized, tagged, and categorized, and no easy way to do so. Worse yet, even if there was a way, you’d have to duplicate the process when you get back home or to the office. For photographers who use Adobe Lightroom, this was especially true.
Two seasoned programmers (and avid photographers), Chris Horne and Chris Morse, decided to change all this. They created Photosmith, an app for the iPad that completes the critical part of the workflow between taking the pictures and organizing them back at the desktop computer. While a notebook computer in the field works, it’s bulky and overkill many times for the quick photo organization needed. Photosmith reduces the problem down to a touch interface, powerful enough to be the only computer a photographer needs while traveling.

Photosmith offers photographers on-the-go tools that haven’t been seen in apps before. Full RAW viewing capability, including 100% zoom on 20+ megapixels cameras. Uploading images and tagging to Flickr, Facebook, and Dropbox. IPTC tagging, rating, keywording, all with full sync from the iPad to Lightroom, using the free plugin for Lightroom.
Photosmith is poised to change the landscape for digital photographers. For less than half of the price of the Camera Connection Kit, Photosmith completes the mobile digital workflow.

May 1st, 2011 at 7:42 am
WOW, I am doing my very first destination wedding and had already decided to buy an Ipad so that I could look at the pictures full screen once I took the pictures, PLUS so that I had the photos backed up “just in case” this app would be so helpful as I could pre-tag them for lightroom while looking at them the very first time.

I absolutely love Adobe Lightroom 3. While I don’t have an iPad 2 (yet!) I’m amazed at how great the original device is, and can’t wait to get the new one. While I wait for it, I would most certainly not mind getting a copy of Photosmith for iPad2, seeing that its a pretty cool app for photographers. Keeping my fingers crossed

I originally bought the ipad to show off photos to clients and use it in the field to store photos and see immediate results. I do most of my workflow in Lightroom, so this app will be a great addition and will really make the iPad shine as a photography tool… Looking forward to trying it out.
May 1st, 2011 at 1:31 pm
this app sounds pretty amazing, I will have to pik it up for my ipad2 eventually… seems incredible. http://www.flickr.com/photos/37309722@N03/ <some of my images.
May 1st, 2011 at 1:32 pm
Looks very good — just received info on this from a friend. I’m curious how much one will have to adapt their workflow, since it’s already a bit taxing enough. But the ipad should be helpful when out on location away from a home computer.
If it’s as polished as it looks, it should be very intuitive and help to speed up organization.
May 1st, 2011 at 1:37 pm
Looks awesome, just what you need on long trips when a computer is not available.
May 1st, 2011 at 1:48 pm

My son just game me an iPad 2.0, and we were lamenting the lack of suitable photo apps for it. This looks like the ideal tool. Take a look at http://ReflectionsOfBeauty.blogspot.com , and see if the words and photos inspire you to make me one of the lucky recipients.

I just started my flikr account, and it’s mostly just full of experiments right now. I’m trying to learn how to make HDR photos for my brother, who loves the vibrant colors.

This would save me time and help get my over 31,000 images tagged and sorted. One could do this sort of thing, on a plane or bus or wherever to save time. I’d love a free copy, but if that doesn’t work, pretty sure I will HAVE to buy one!
May 1st, 2011 at 9:15 pm

It’s great that some really useful photo editing tools are now becoming available for the ipad. The lack of powerful tools was the only thing holding me back from buying one.
May 1st, 2011 at 9:24 pm
How does photosmith handle shooting raw + jpg? will it let you treat both files as one (the way lightroom does) and process the smaller jpg on the iPad while maintaining the connection between the two files?
May 1st, 2011 at 9:50 pm
Been waiting for a Lightroom app for the iPad. Put my name in the hat and pull it out!

Looks like such a neat tool to have and use on my ipad 2…will check it out!
May 1st, 2011 at 11:27 pm
Too bad I already bought a copy! From playing with it so far, this is going to be pretty sweet – maybe on par with Jeffrey Friedl’s Lightroom plugins, and that’s quite a compliment. I’ll get my first real chance to try it out this coming week in Las Vegas.
May 1st, 2011 at 11:33 pm
Wow, this is an app that I need to get the speed of my heavy workflow back.

Sounds like an interesting app, I’m using my iPad2 to take a copy of my raw images, delete the really obvious duds, then import into lightroom.
Being able to further filter based on full image viewing plus tagging on the go sounds great!

A good start but what will you do once you have filled up that 64 gig iPad on a long trip? My dropbox is not that big so a laptop for storage is probably still in the cards.
I have been using the Photosync app. It allows me to upload to my home computer over the web via FTP, which is a rare thing in app world when working with RAW files.

Thanks so much for creating the Photosmith app! Now I will buy an ipad and the app when back in the USA.

Sounds like a great program. If I win I might switch to lightroom from Aperture.
Thanks,

To take photos is my passion. But the more professional I am doing it, the more time I spend searching for solution for the best workflow to categorize them, organize them and archive them – and yes, it is great to work with Lightroom but sometimes more complicated. So I love hearing that Photosmith helps me to solve this problem. Thanks a lot for creating it!!!!

this sounds awesome!
May 2nd, 2011 at 2:33 am
I bought an iPad hoping (among many reasons) that I’d be able to use it for reviewing/syncing photos in the field, but none of the apps seemed to do just that until now. I would LOVE a copy of this now that I’m working in Lightroom again.

This looks like a great product. Thanks for including me in the drawing.
May 2nd, 2011 at 3:59 am
The app looks great – I already have the camera connection kit but rarely use it because copying to the iPad’s local photo store is just good for viewing the image once. It would be great to add tags and filter out the good pictures from the iPad.
May 2nd, 2011 at 4:13 am
This is (almost) the last thing I need to comfortably switch from using a laptop to using the iPad for travelling. They just need to a the ability to keyword tag multiple photos and I’ll be there!
May 2nd, 2011 at 4:14 am
This is the cat’s meow. What a boon, the price seems very reasonable, I hate it when I feel like am hosed. Good luck with your product and I sure would like to win one.
May 2nd, 2011 at 4:15 am
Definitely this is a killer application for photographers to save time! Would definitely get this app plus investing in an ipad!
May 2nd, 2011 at 4:15 am
Super nice. Love the idea of use the iPad that way. Now I got a reason to by an iPad since I love photo and gear
Plz let me win the app!
Now we only need apps with aperture and photoshop sync
May 2nd, 2011 at 4:29 am
Thanks for posting this and letting us know that this was available! Finally, a great photographers companion for us iPad users (long overdue). I love using my iPad for showcasing photos with clients but have missed not having a decent photography app for while on the road. As an amateur photographer, this site has been invaluable for me. Thanks for everything.

I would be glad to win this too!
May 2nd, 2011 at 6:12 am
Maybe I’m missing something, but it appears that the only two ways to connect to the iPad are wiFi and 3G. I can see syncing a LR catalog with an iPad over wifi, but how do I get the photos (or even just thumbnails) into the app in the first place? If I could replace my laptop with an iPad for trips, I’d go out and get one tomorrow. I can store my photos on a drive that has a card reader built in, but I don’t see the connection to either that device or my CF cards, or card reader.
May 2nd, 2011 at 6:18 am
Looks like a great application that was missing on the market, love it already, thanks

May 2nd, 2011 at 6:39 am
I got my iPad 2 the first day it came out. As a photographer, I was not impressed with apps available to show, organize, and edit photos on the go. However, this apps seems promising. I am excited to use this app and see how this app evolves to help photographers on the go. And thank you dPS for giving out this app! My portfolio can be viewed at http://www.dhrumildesai.me

Any chance for a Try to Buy?
I have the IPAD camera Kit
and also bought the Photo-sort App.
I imagine that Photo Smith app will setup it’s own library so that the Main iPAD Photo library will always be there.

Very anxious to try out Photo Smith. I f I don’w in is there a trial version?
I have Photo Sort right now and it is not bad….

This looks like a great program. I’ve been looking for a way to incorporate my iPad into my photography workflow, and it looks like this might be the way to do it.
May 2nd, 2011 at 7:37 am
@ Terry Straehley – you can get a “camera connection” kit (basically a dongle that plugs into the bottom port) for the iPad that lets you transfer images via a USB cable.

May 2nd, 2011 at 10:55 am

I have been researching photo apps for the iPad for a while. One allows the interaction of sliders for color correction but the not-quite-instantaneous results scared me away. This app sounds very useful (and will also motivate me to utilize the iPad a bit more before I get back home). Thanks for the write up, I would love to add this to the arsenal!
