I think the picture quality is excellent from this model, I especially like the zoom in and close up modes.

i say this camera is worth what it cost,
the picture quality might be not has good has a dslr,
but,
the picture quality is way better than a regular point and shoot, or non-dslr cameras
thats why it an't cost has much has a dslr, and does not cost cheap has a digital camera.
PLUS, the camera styleish looks is way better than its class like the Olympus SP590.
this camera is perfect for people whos sick of the regular point and shoot/digital cameras,
and don't want a hassle of trying to use a complicating DSLR or little alone carry one,
this camera is IT. Nikon coolpix p90.

Finely a great digital compact camera!
The electronic viewfinder alone should be the reason to buy this camera. In a bright daylight, using the screen only - is imposible!
Besides the electronic viewfinder, you get an incredible zoom range (26-624 mm) and the tilting screen!
Also, the camera has very comfortable handling and a good, almost intuitive layout.

I only wish for a RAW file choice and a hot shoe.

A great work horse

In response to Jim above, the camera does feel very light and honestly, a little cheap in materials. I use a very substantial feeling Nikon D2X at the office and I did miss its reassuring weight and solid construction when using my P90. That said, i've adjusted to the P90's feel when using it. The camera is what it is and full featured enough for the cost that I don't expect more.

I've had a P90 for a good 6 weeks now and I'm pretty happy with it. It can really pull in some sharp shots and the color tends to be very vibrant. I love the extensive on the fly zoom capability and i've wow'd a few friends with the shots I can pull off with this point and shoot. It has enough pixels to be forgiving if you need to crop, easy to use controls and menu system (atleast for those familiar with Nikon), and is almost invisibly light when carrying it around versus any dSLR with the goodies.

The downs for this camera are 1) the camera ON to 1st shot taken time is like any other Point and shoot, you'll probably miss the shot if you aren't ready for it or have time. 2) No RAW format means you need to do it right as possible the first time. 3) Shutter release press to actual actuation has a little delay. Be ready. 4) Highlights have been a little extra hot.

Also, don't rely on Programmed mode or Auto ISO if you can. I've gotten some softness or grain (or both) when doing so. But I've gotten some awesome shots in Shutter or Aperature Priority with 64 or 100 ISO, and its easy and quick to tweak the exposure a fraction of a stop or two either way for some fine tuning if you need it too.

I rarely get to use manual when out, so I don't mind only having one control dial that goes back and forth between Shutter speed and Aperature.

Also (again), with its amazing zoom, when you need to use the flash, remember the fall off (inverse square). You'll be spoiled by the zoom so much that in low light situations you'll forget to physically move in get the most from your flash, and you'll get some under exposed shots if you are not careful.

If you don't mind tinkering with the settings while shooting, it's a great all-in-one solution for $400 that will give you some amazing quality shots.

The Nikon P90 is a great idea if you want the capability of a full size Digital SLR without the cost of or the messing about with different lenses.

Had a chance to look over the P 90 today and was hoping for the best but it was absolutely the worst. Too light and felt really cheap. And thats the truth.
