New Nikon D700 DSLR and Speedlight Flashgun
Just a short post to let those in the marked for some higher level DSLRs know that this week Nikon have announced some new gear including:
Nikon D700 DSLR – this is a 12.1 megapixel full frame DSLR (pictured left) . It’s essentially the D3 internally inside a D300 body (so high specs in a compact body). It also has a built in flash (the first pro level DSLR to do so), dust cleaning and a 3.0 inch LCD.
Nikon Speedlight SB-900 – a higher end flashgun – pretty powerful.

At this rate, Canon’s gonna have to really kick it up a notch.

Thom Hogan over at http://www.bythom.com has an excellent article on Nikon’s history of releasing cameras that will go a long way toward making it more clear where the D90 is. I find Thom one of the best sources for reasoned and balanced information on Nikon cameras and photography.

It must be Nikons answer to the 5D.
I shoot with a 5D and I’m looking forward to Canons new answers. It’s fun to watch the battle for pixels and pixel quality. But, it’s also expensive for those trying to keep up.

Oh my, that surely looks sweet! (and not so for my wallet)
Personally, I’m missing the program options that Nikon has replaced with the top screen.

Why 700? …why not 400? -.-

I agree, this looks like Canon’s 5D, only Nikon style of course.
I’m glad Nikon introduced this camera. Now Canon has to answer, and probably will with a Canon 5D Mark II. Only question is: when?
Oh, the built-in flash is a nice touch to the Nikon D700, IMHO. Most pros won’t use it, but then again, not all the D700 owners will be pros, I think.

The D300 needs room to grow and they can also build off of the D700.
The D90 should be announced sometime around the beginning of August 2 years after the D80 was announced?

While the new D700 looks pretty sweet, is a bit out of my league, so … my D80 will prolly morph into a D300. On the other side, does anyone have a price tag estimation on the SB-900 ? the specs look pretty sweet to me, frankly :)

I am using a NIKON D_40 and it has me so happy I can’t believe it! To me this is Photography Heaven. To think there is something even better blows me away.

I figure if I don’t eat for…6 months, I shud be able to afford one!
But srsly, I can’t wait to see the Canon response.
What does everyone think of the inclusion of a flash?
Can’t hurt, i guess?

Rosh…there is no such thing as pixel war. having a lot of pixel does not equate to better image quality.

I’ve enjoyed my D70 and looking forward to the D90 when it hits. Hope it sports the motor like the 70.

I think it is better to fully know one camera, than to partially know a lot.
If you are fully satisfied with what you have now,
think ten times before changing it!
The Nikon D700 is not a cheap camera.

Marqi…I agree with you that there is no such thing as a pixel war;
but it is hard for me to believe that a lot of pixels does not equate to a better image quality.
Can you enligthen me on this one?
Thanks!
