Movement: Weekly Photography Challenge
Your photographic challenge this week is to take and share a photo on the theme of movement.

We’re looking to see images that convey a sense of motion but there’s a lot of freedom in how you go about that. For starters you might shoot a moving subject…. or you might wish to be moving yourself (i.e. shooting from a vehicle).
Then there’s a range of shooting techniques you could use – panning, zooming, slow sync flash and more.
Before you head off to shoot your image – here are a few posts from our archives that might help:
- How to capture motion blur
- 13 places to practice taking motion blur shots
- A beginners guide to capturing motion in your photography
Once you’ve taken and selected the ‘Movement’ image that you’d like to share – upload it to your favourite photo sharing site or blog and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.
If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSMOVEMENT to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.
Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks challenge – Work challenge where there were some great shots submitted.

Afuri is a popular ramen restaurant in Ebisu (Tokyo).
Here is some movement/motion blur from their kitchen as they shake out the fresh noodles:

If you photograph nature then you certainly need to get used to fast shutter speeds and plenty of movement.
Knowledge of the species and anticipating their next move is useful:

Here is a picture I took of some friends drag racing a few weeks ago. This is my first use of the panning technique to keep the cars in focus and the background blurry.

I love to take movement vs still images and this one is one of my favorite. It was taken in an old building (The Lunenurg Academy School, built in 1894-1895) just before the students moved (unfortunately) to their new school.

We had a great day yesterday with friends at Purlingbrook Falls. One of the very scenic spots up in the Gold Coast Hinterland. Kids loved it too. Here they are giving me some movement for my challenge this week, alongside the waterfall. Shame that the part of the walk under the waterfall was closed off. There is always the next adventure.

Ballroom dancing is a good sport to capture fast action movements, but it is also very difficult to achieve good shots because of the speed of the dancers (it is difficult to make sure that they look good)
