17-55 f2.8 is my best lens at a reasonable price from eBay.
It's matter of learning how to work with them. Just to be straight is not always the equipment, matters a lot who is behind the lens and how much knowledge is on post processioning.

Mine would be the Sigma 50-150 f2.8 II APO glass weighing in around 28 oz.
I have owned the 80-200 nikon and the tamron 70-200 f2.8 lenses and by far this lens is as sharp and a whole lot lighter.

Anyone want to comment on the Tamron 70-200 F.2 MAcro. I have this one and I find it very versital lense. It is great for portraits, fast for sports photos, a little short for some wildlife, but still a good compromise. Itis also not nearly as expensive as Nikon 70-200mm VR.

I own Olympus E410 gear. My favorite is Olympus ED 12 -60mm f2.8-4.0 SWD.

For all around versitility and extraordinary quality, it's hard to beat the Canon 28-300 3.5-5.6 L IS. The problem with this lens, however, is that it weighs a ton and is anything but subtle. As a consequence, I'm more inclined to rely on Canon's 24-105 L IS in a lot of situations where I can get by with only 105. Finally, my Sigma 12-24 is just great for architectural work and is generally quite sharp. All my Canon bodies are full frame.
