Learn How to Get this Cool Long Shutter Speed Effect [VIDEO]

Here’s a video tutorial for a fun photography task that you can do this weekend (and get results like the image above).
What you’ll need is:
- A camera that lets to choose long shutter speeds
- A tripod to keep the camera still
- An escalator (preferably one with some pretty lighting around it – think Casino’s, shopping centers etc – preferably one in a non busy location)
- The ability to hold yourself still for 20 seconds or so
The video and image is by Brian Shaler – you can read his blog here and see his Flickr Account here.

Very cool twist on a great technique. I think that I’ll try this one soon!

very cool! ;-)
but i do NOT suggest trying this in a casino. a few months ago, i got ‘busted’ by a casino security guy who caught me snapping pics of a glitzy chandelier. he made me stand there and watched as i deleted the 6 casino shots i’d taken… (or so he thought ;-)
so try this trick maybe at an airport. chicago’s o’hare has an awesome animated light sculpture along the moving walkway. could be a killer shot if you’re ever in the neighborhood.

I wouldn’t suggest trying this at an airport, considering the TSA and DHS and their over-reaching disregard for private citizens’ rights.
This is a really cool effect, but I would recommend having a copy of the Photographer’s Rights (http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm) with you. And it would be good if everyone who is confronted about this was courteous. Security guards are only trying to keep their jobs, after all.
They are also well within their rights to ask you to stop photographing or leave, as well. And if you refuse to leave, that constitutes trespassing (provided the building is privately owned – like most malls, casinos, and airports).

I live in the middle of nowhere, we don’t have escalators anywhere. Booooo.
Joking!

The image looks cool, but really most people will not be able to stand still for about 20 seconds, especially on a moving escalator, so they always will come out a little blurred.

I tried this is the local mall… lots of neon around=. Bribe a security guard with a slice of pizza & they are cool!

might be interesting to try this in Atlanta, GA. That city has the most escalators of any city I know.
