Laser Pointer Abstract - How I Took It
Over at the Forums in the ‘How I took it’ section - DPS forum member murtasma posted this image and tells us how the effect was achieved and how it was taken:
This image was taken using Bulb mode. I was at my friends house where she had this small crystal lamp that looked like a mushroom.
I sat down still and she would open the shutter then lock it.
She would shine the laser pointer at the lamp which made it glow and cast red around me. Then she would highlight me with the laser pointer. I have several images like this.
I really like doing these types of photos because your never sure what your going to get. In the future I would like to be further from the camera but zoomed in and get more even lighting with the laser pointer.
My right arm isn’t lit as well and the right side of the image looks kind of bad.
You can see other pictures like this on my flickr page
- Camera: Canon EOS 20D
- Exposure: 75 sec (75)
- Aperture: f/11
- Focal Length: 31 mm
- ISO Speed: 1600
While it might not be ‘perfect’ (the right hand side does let the shot down a little) it’s definitely an interesting technique that could lead to some very interesting results - thanks for sharing murtasma and keep perfecting this technique!
If you’ve got an image that you’re proud of and that we could learn a thing or two from we’d love you to share it over at the How I took it Section of the forums. See more of murtasma’s work at their Flickr Account

Wow, what a suprise for me this morning. To see my image on the main page of DPS. Very sweet, this could be a good day. I do agree with the right side of the image. That was something I was disapointed in. My laser pointer person got a little to excited on that side. There was also a table on my right that probably didn’t help the right side much.
Someday I may revist this with a diffrent approach.
Thanks for the honor DPS!

Holy cow! What a great twist on “painting with light” techniques. This is great, and you don’t need a bunch of expensive lights or equipment to do it. Thank you!

Looks like the mushroom, is possessing the person in the picture. Very nicely done.

Suggest a cautionary note regarding the use of laser pointers — they can cause damage to eyes if used improperly.

I like the picture but am wondering why you used 1600 ISO with a tripod and long exposure? Sure you’d have to make the exposure even longer but you’d have less noise.

I tried writing my name out once, obviously it didn’t turn out good. I shot nearly 50frames and not one was good.
At least your shot looked great, probably because she had an outline to shoot from. Nifty!

Actually i dont think that this picture is a good example of painting with lights. About a week ago i did something like this but using other lightening thing, like my mobile phone, lamp and a cigarette lighter.
Itried some thing in photoshop too, like adding this efect from original image to other etc.
Iused 30sec shutterspeed and you dont need 1600iso cause it gonna f*ck it up. I Used iso200.
This picture is made with photoshop:
