Picasa does a pretty good job at this too. I don’t use it, but I’ve glanced through it and tried a few out.
I ended up using Gallery2 for my family photo gallery. It’s a pretty good piece of open source software.

I agree with Brian. Gallery2 is a php web application so you’ll need a place to host it. I like it because it automatically creates smaller versions and thumbnails of your pictures, can be customized, and supports a desktop client for bulk uploads (no more listing out every single file you want to upload). Plus if you’re paying for hosting anyway, it’s free.

Personally for the effort and storage space required, Flickr is the way to go. The interface is nice, it doesn’t really have any negative stigma surrounding it, and you get a lot fo exposure through groups and tags.
I’ve tried to host my own photos before but I find Flickr is much nicer/easier.

I agree with Josh, but I went a step further and used Flickr’s API to grab my recent photos and also my favorite Flickr photos, then I display them as a gallery on my website.

I personally think that photo-sharing sites are the way to go nowadays. More exposure, no limits, quite free.

Flickr is a great start. You don’t have to install anything and it’s still cheap even if you need the pro account :)

I like gallery2 but I have used other programs as well. I don’t like photo-sharing sites like flicker because they do not offer protection, like water marking, etc. to keep you photos from being downloaded without your permission.

Sir, as I have not seen a “thank you” in the comments as of yet so… I would like to say thank you very much for the tutorial. I am very very new to digital photog and am searching like crazy for information on “how to”. I was graciously gifted CS2 a while back and am doing my best to learn the program. Your site is very informative and helpful. I have subscribed to your blog and enjoy the articles a lot.

echoing Bruce. This is so timely for me. Yes, I use flickr a great deal, but I’m trying to break into portrait and wedding photography and sending someone to a flickr URL is hardly professional. THIS however, I can do myself and toss up on my webspace. I just did a quick test and have a lovely little test gallery. Tomorrow I’ll do the whole site. Thank you!

I have downloaded many photos to kodalgallery and picasa. Till I have no complaint and am satisfied. Despite this I shall be satisfied until, I have full that my photo is watermarked.You do hard labour and the benefit is taken by any unknown is very illogical. We would like to have guarantee from the sites against this malpractice. Hope other thoughtfuls will agree with me and have their opinions to reach the SITE owners. I AM IN iNDIA and the other side is America, who knows what until the patronage is bestowed by the Browse owners.

DeviantArt.com is also great. The interface is a little more aesthetic than Flickr, and the quality of submissions tends to be a little higher than the generic snapshot photographer on Flickr.

I loved this tutorial, now if I could find one on how to upload the files to my website I would be very happy! :) I love the layout choices and the clarity of the images when finished. I do have a website but I’m not sure how to make a page that will present my photo. Right now I use photosite which I have a pay account with also to display my work. Would love to just add them to a page on my origional site and I would only have to pay for one.

Thanks for the tips on this process in CS2. I had done it in Elements, but hadn’t figured it out in CS2. I also haven’t figured out how to upload them to my web site. I use the small images created (not the thumbnails) to create slide shows on sites like rockyou.com or slide.com. It’s easy and fast and creates the HTML that you just copy and paste into any text block on your site.

I recommend ‘jalbum’ to create and upload an interactive site including thumbnails, slideshow etc.
Point it at a source folder, set some options, then have it smart-ftp the contents to your website. Very configurable.

1st of all, many thanks for this great sharing. Even this time I know what button is that :P oooh.. its for creating websites! cool ;)
Anyway, now I publish my photos on Multiply, quite simple and easy. I would like to try with Gallery2 also, haven’t uploaded to my webserver

I have been putting my personal photography on line now for over 4 years and have tried a number of different solutions from building it myself to using Gallery2 to using some of the hosting services out there. I never liked the idea of the photography social sites as you got what you paid for in my mind. All of the solutions that I have tried have had huge shortcomings and frustrated me as a photographer that wants to minimize the work I need to do and maximize my exposure while still controlling my market brand.
I took this frustration and decided to start building something better, we call it FocalPower (www.focalpower.com).
