Last week we asked Digital Photography School readers to answer – How Old Is Your Newest Digital Camera?
After 1500 responses the results are in with the vast majority of us with new cameras. Here’s the spread of results:

53% of us have cameras that are under 1 year old and 74% of us with cameras under 2 years old!
I get the feeling that digital camera manufacturers would love that we’re upgrading so quickly!

Do you really think it’s a sign of quick upgrades? Or is it also likely that those of us with newer cameras are more enthusiastic and more likely to be looking out for websites/advice to help us make the most out of our new toy?
Plus, you’ve also got the issue that it’s only really recently that price crashes in entry level DSLRs has brought a whole new audience to the hobby.
If I were the manufacturers, I wouldn’t be getting too comfy just yet…

Pewari – I think it’s probably a combination. I do think that this website has a lot of beginners (so those starting out) but there’s also quite a few who’ve been updating (from my interactions with people in forums).

The survey doesn’t make a distinction between P&S vs DSLR. There are so many cheap P&S camera’s on the market that you can almost regard them as disposable. A DSLR (especially the upper end of the market) is a much greater investment so retention time would be greater.
I said as much when the question was first asked so I apologies if this comment sounds familiar.

In the heyday of film cameras, people had little incentive to upgrade — there wasn’t a huge difference between cameras after you accounted for a few major technical innovations (with autofocus probably being the last huge jump). But now in the digital era, cameras have gotten on the same merry-go-round improvement cycle as PCs have had for the past decade or more. So, you can expect folks to turn over their digital cameras on a much more frequent basis, same as their PCs.

now I am curious about
“how many digital cameras have you personally owned?”
Cause I am on my 3rd, and looking at getting a new one by christmas.

My camera is the first ever DSLR of Canon released on 2003. I just can’t justify buying a new one(Rebel XT) anytime soon. Maybe when I earn ridiculous amount of money from blogging.
I’m looking into buying a smaller one though because I can’t always bring the dslr.
