How Often Do You Take Photos? [POLL]
Time for another quick weekly poll. It was inspired by a conversation I had with two fellow hobby photographers about the number of photos we take.
The two photographers I was talking with both told me that they take around 2000 shots a month – but one took 50-70 a day while the other did most of their shots on weekend and rarely picked their camera upon on weekdays.
So how often do you take photos? Are you a daily photographer or do you shoot less frequently?
Looking forward to seeing your answers!

I carry the camera wherever I go, you never know when you need it. Often the coolest photos done in the least expected time, which can not be repeated.

I always try to carry a point & shoot wherever I go because like Daniel*1977 said, you never know when you’d need it!
However, my wife gave birth to our first baby 3 weeks ago, so I’ve been snapping away daily with my DSLR ever since (clocked up nearly 1000 in the first week!)

You’re missing an option. I don’t take a photo everyday, nor do I typically go a whole week before taking more photos. How about adding every few days to the list?

I’ve taken so many lately I have carpal tunnel on my trigger finger….I wish I could get a d300 that’s left handed :)

I don’t take photographs, I capture time on paper!

Picked weekly, but you really should have had a ’several times a week’ option or maybe a ‘when whenever there is something worth it’ option… :)

People think I am stupid but I always carry my huge camera bag around with me every day. I feel like you never know when you will see something interesting, be it people, or something in a specific light or other things.

I always carry my Nikon D90 with me. I have the Lowepro Fastpack 250, which lets me carry everything I need in one bag. You never know when inspiration is going to strike.

I have a daily photo blog, so I have to take photos every day. (Click on my name to see it.)
Taking photos every day is one of the best ways to improve your skills as a photographer, in my opinion.
September 3rd, 2009 at 6:17 pm
I shot everyday if the camera takes a break it will be in the weekend. But I make my living by taking pictures so I hope I will keep on doing that :)
September 3rd, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Almost every day.
September 3rd, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Mostly at the weekends (weekly), although school holidays when we have the kids over and they do something cute means that it could be anything from a few shots to a 100 shots every day.
September 3rd, 2009 at 6:35 pm
I did a “Photo A Day” project for the first six months of 2009 so was using my camera daily, however I found that I was forcing myself into it and my creativity was being sapped. Recently I find myself using my camera 2-3 times a week – sometimes more, sometimes less. But I always carry a P&S with me because, as Daniel*1977 said, you never know when you’ll find *that* shot!
September 3rd, 2009 at 7:00 pm
I shoot between daily and weekly 2-4 days a week
September 3rd, 2009 at 8:24 pm
It depends. I shoot every other day during university holidays, but during the term I barely pick up the camera at all.
September 3rd, 2009 at 8:50 pm
I agree with Jamesc359… there is an option missing…how about adding this category:
Few days out of the week
Or something like that…
September 3rd, 2009 at 10:40 pm
I try to work with the camera at least on the weekends just to keep my hand in it and work on improving my skill. I’m trying to convince the hubby to let me get a smaller point and shoot to carry around in my purse so i’ve always got one handy. Seen a lot of opportunities but never have my camera there when I need it.
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:02 pm
I’m just learning to use an SLR so I’m trying to shoot something every day. Having said that, two kids (including a two month old) makes it really, really hard to do that some days!
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:05 pm
I did at least week end pull out the camera and went out with the family, while this time of year in Dubai our best place during day time with family is indoor so im trying to play around with the indoor settings.
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:15 pm
I shoot more than weekly, but not always everyday. Depends on whether or not I am working on a class project. I carry my P&S with me everywhere, and keep m dSLR handy, too.
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:16 pm
I wish you had one more choice below less than monthly and that would be “Not often enough”
Taking photos is something I always saying I’m going to do more. But I never seem to do :(
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:25 pm
more like every 2-3 days which the poll doesnt allow for. Camera of sorts goes most everywhere with me (phone or point and shoot and dslr is impractical). God my dslr a year ago and it has reset the 9.999 clock twice over so has at least 20,000 “miles” to its name!
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Whether its with a camera or my iphone I’m shooting something everyday. You never know what you’ll come across that might inspire or amuse you.
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:36 pm
I have my camera on me nearly always, being a street photographer you never know whats going to happen when your out and about. But I always make a constant effort not to just go mad and shoot for hours everyday, for me at least it helps keep things fresh, and I get a good flow of ideas if I take a step back.
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Daily, doing a “Project 365″ thing. But like Roz says, it’s often forced, and creativity/inspiration goes out the door.
I always carry a camera on me though, whether it’s my D80, my cellphone, or both. And I’ve been evaluating a few P&S’s, but obviously haven’t decided on one yet.
September 3rd, 2009 at 11:44 pm
I’d make it a point to shoot weekly– mostly on weekends. During the week I’d be brain storming as to what my subject might be or would be interesting to capture. Always bearing in mind to challenge myself to not just take photographs but to better my skills and to top last weeks photos.
I often have the dilemma of what camera to carry, my P&S or my DSLR? Then I find myself alternating the 2.
I agree with Roz’s comment, I’d like to shoot more often but you can’t force yourself to be inspired all the time.
September 4th, 2009 at 1:39 am
There are days I am constantly snapping away, then there are days I don’t snap at all. I answered “weekly” but it’s more like every other day. My P&S is ALWAYS with me tho!
September 4th, 2009 at 1:44 am
Daily, as I try to carry my camera with my whenever it is possible. It’s a good possibility to practice your ability to use the camera and to see.
Every time I leave my Nikon at home I have to be sorry about it at least thrice :)
September 4th, 2009 at 1:48 am
Varies a lot, usually at least monthly but I guess there has sometimes been over month period that I haven’t taken any. And definitely won’t carry camera with me all the time.
September 4th, 2009 at 1:50 am
I usually try and get some photos on the weekends, trying to shuffle it between school and other things, that is why I take my camera if I go out nearly anywhere.
September 4th, 2009 at 2:23 am
I tried a photo-a-day project, and found I was getting less creative, not more. Now I shoot a few days a week and take the camera every time I go out of town, even on business. I’ve also been working on “seeing” the picture before I take it — having a better idea of what clearly won’t work, and avoiding those shots. That leaves me more time for better shots and deliberate experiments.
September 4th, 2009 at 2:31 am
I pretty much take some sort of pictures every day. Not sure if I have a passion or an obsession.
September 4th, 2009 at 2:41 am
I agree with Daniel*1977, I take my camera with me everywhere I go because you never know when that one good shot will pop up and you have to get it. I also agree with jamesSC359, you missed an option – I don’t shoot every day. I shoot when I spot something interesting or I think I can make something from where I am at. It is difficult to say that I don’t shoot everyday as well as that I do. I may get 30 good shots on Monday and nothing until Thursday. so and so forth. Saturdays and Sundays I push for anything and usually get one nice photo. Funny how that all works out.
September 4th, 2009 at 2:43 am
I started a business and sucked the art out of me and my camera. I fixed that and now the camera goes where I go.
September 4th, 2009 at 3:32 am
I shoot daily, but only because I have started my own 365 project (which you can find at Photo Tip of the Day).
Before that, I was shooting just a few times a month and really feeling burned out. Unlike some above, my project has really helped me get excited about photography again!
September 4th, 2009 at 4:12 am
I agree we need a category between daily and weekly. I carry my camera with me all the time. I take pictures ALMOST every day just because I like taking pictures – birds, flowers, people, happenings on the street or at the park – whatever catches my eye.
September 4th, 2009 at 5:04 am
I would love to shoot daily but family and work take up so much time… I should really make more of an effort and make time to shoot.
September 4th, 2009 at 6:23 am
I typically take a picture of something daily… but I don’t always get the chance. This poll was a simple, cool idea.
September 4th, 2009 at 7:36 am
I chose weekly because I always go shooting on one of my days off. I would go more often if I had the opportunity.
September 4th, 2009 at 8:37 am
I’m doing a 365 project so I take photos every day… before i started the project, it would be a few times a week plus both saturday and sunday. you need another option in this poll!
September 4th, 2009 at 8:46 am
None of your options fit me either. Some months I may take up to 4 or 500, yet at ather times I have not taken any. Depends on my work pressure, which sometimes is high. I tend to make the effort to find time to click a few when changes happen, such as spring, autumn, rain events etc, and of course family.

This article has inspired me to get busy!
September 4th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
For now, I take photos only on the weekends because my weekdays are packed with classes and work until 8pm. I am going to try to find a nice way to carry my dslr along with my backpack for school and have it not be a hassle.
September 4th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Only take photos when there is something worth photographing. Having now graduated to roll film mainly Fuji reversal with my Linhof Technika IV. I have the results scanned and work on them in Photoshop. I once took nearly five photos in one day with my Nikon Digital but results are nothing like Film. I implore other photographers (N.B – I take snaps) to join the Fast Image Light Management movement (FILM for short ) !!

Photos?
3-4 K par week. Yep thats right, what a fulltime pro shooter in LA shooots (in raw) for 3 Weddings a week. God help us all for Post Production time.
September 4th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
I am getting into the habit of taking my camera with me almost everywhere so that I can be sure to take at least a few pictures everyday.
September 4th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
My goal is to shoot daily. I typically shoot at least every other day, sort of mini shoots with larger shoots on the weekend. I also post a daily image on Facebook and Twitter which helps me with feedback for photo contest submissions. I carry my camera (Pentax K20D) with a few lenses with me all of the time and I also keep a tripod in the car for those early morning still reflections and the evening hour sunsets. Feel free to check out my site and let me know what you think, I can always learn more and find a better way to do things. If there’s anyone here in the SF Bay Area that wants to get out and shoot with us sometimes, just let me know send me an email or leave a message on my site.

unfortunately I tend to lack the opportunity to take photographes each and every day …
Also I find sometimes when you almost “force” yourself to take photographs on a regular basis you can become slightly disenchanted .. for example if your forte is art nude, you have a burning need to take photographs and as such take some landscapes .. the landscapes dont work out and you feel less inclined to work outside your photographic comfort zones

I have carried a Sony point and shoot on my belt for years. Probably take hundreds of pictures monthly. Many of these are some of my most enjoyable. My D300 is too heavy to carry on a work day around the farm. Trips into the city on errands or to see children and grandchildren are when I primarily use the D300. Of course the quality on the images of the heavier camera is worth the effort.
September 8th, 2009 at 1:35 am
I try to take shots daily, I retired a few years ago so I have lots of time to take photos. I also have grand kids. Plus I carry a P&S in my pocket all the time.
September 15th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
In the past 18 months my two cameras have racked up about 16,000 photos. one fo them being a Nikon D90 (at current 6,800 from new, which was 4th month this year(2009)) and my compact Panasonic DMC-TZ 15 (at current (9,300 from new, which was around 5th month last year(2008)).
29.6 photos a day….

I need to shoot at least one day out of the week. I was born to take pictures, because when I don’t I seriously get withdrawals. I start dreaming that I’m on a photo shoot, or I think about it ALL day until it drives me crazy and I have to pick up the camera. When I’m having a conversation with my husband I always think how I would take his picture in that particular light – he says I don’t listen to him. I don’t. I am seriously addicted and it has been this way for me for 20 years. People tell me I should start my own business, and I get lots of requests from friends, but I don’t charge. I just love taking pictures!
